Title: Avast Free and MachineKeys folder flood
Post by: AZBruno on September 16, 2020, 09:06:44 PM
A year ago I was concerned that the folder C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\MachineKeys was being flooded with files. I brought it up in https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=228159.msg1522504 (https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=228159.msg1522504).

At the time, I turned off HTTPS scanning in the Web Shield and that eliminated the problem.

I tried it again with the latest version of Avast fre and the problem still occurs. I looked at my wife's PC and found she did not have a flood of files. After some comparing, I could see that the Owner of the MachineKeys folder on my PC is System, whereas on my wife's PC it is Administrators. I changed the owner on my PC to Administrators and no new files have shown up.

I looked at two other computers I have. My wife's PC and one of the others were updated to Windows 10 from Windows 7 and both show Administrators as the owner of MachineKeys. The two machines that were installed with Windows 10 from scratch both show System as the owner.

Oddly, my other PC which shows System as the owner does not experience that problem. But, it also is the only machine running Windows 10 2004. The others run Windows 10 1909. And I don't run a web browser much on that machine... I use it just for testing stuff.

Curious what others may experience.
