Hi all, please welcome the newest version of Avast AV: 20.8 (20.8.2429)
*Update: Oct-07-2020 upon applying new service-pack, current version number is 20.8.2432*
Here are our biggest improvements:
- Improved accessibility - Our interface is now better suited for impaired users
- Safer web browsing - Web Shield now supports scanning for threats in Google’s QUIC protocol
- Friendlier CyberCapture - If you stumble upon a file we can’t identify, CyberCapture can send it to our ThreatLabs for a detailed analysis. We’ve updated this entire process to make it easier than ever
- Better Remote Access Shield - Not only do we now support Windows’ Samba protocol, we’ve also added logs to show all remote connection attempts to your computer. (Avast Premium Security only)
- Firewall recognizes VPNs - Firewall now knows when you’re using our VPN and won’t classify this as an unknown network. (Avast Premium Security only)
And here are just some of the 100+ issues we also fixed:
- Stomped a pretty nasty UI bug that made AV pop up randomly
- Edge case fixed where Password Protection didn’t recognize supported browsers
- Text encoding of an exclusion created from detection dialog
- Shredder can now properly shred read-only files
- Fixed service crashes that happened when uninstalling the Wi-Fi Inspector component
- Remnants of configurations are now properly stored in the registry (instead of avast5.ini)
- Firewall no longer blocks ping (this was an edge case)
- Fixed the excessive memory usage of process monitor caused by Behavioral Shield hooking
- Fixed OS boot problems when running smss.exe as virtualized
- Plugged a memory leak in RegistryChangeWatcher
- Fixed aswToolsSvc.exe initialization issues upon version update and before OS restart
- Fixed serviceDLL monitoring and removal
- Repair action now properly fixes hooklib.dll
- Remote Access Shield detection window no longer appears if you’ve disabled its notifications in settings
How to install:
1. Update from your existing Avast version via Settings -> Update -> Update program
2. Or you can download and install files:
Online installers (recommended):
- Free: https://bits.avcdn.net/insttype_FREE (https://bits.avcdn.net/insttype_FREE)
- Premium Security (formerly Premier): https://bits.avcdn.net/insttype_APR (https://bits.avcdn.net/insttype_APR)
Offline installers:
- Free: https://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup_offline.exe (https://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup_offline.exe)
- Premium Security (formerly Premier): https://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_premier_antivirus_setup_offline.exe (https://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_premier_antivirus_setup_offline.exe)
As usual, a very big thanks to everyone involved! Enjoy.

Yay, I can confirm the issue is fixed now 8)

Mad rash fool that I am, I noticed Avast 20.8 very soon after release and impulsively installed it on five of my seven Windows x64 systems (1x7, 1x8.1 and 3x10). As the man who jumped from the top of the Empire State Building was heard to say as he passed the 70th floor, "So far, so good." :o
I could swear that my older slower systems are running more smoothly and quickly. There is also a small saving in RAM usage, for instance on my Windows 7 x64 3GB RAM system of probably 50MB. It just works so darned well. Is it too good to be true?
P.S. I have since updated my remaiming two Windows 10 systems without problems. This Avast version is the dog's wotnots (that's very good).
-
Thanks Benko, spreading the news... :)

I'm glad that this update brings out accessibility improvements, as i am one of the blind users. Keep it up guys!
This version is good for now.

Why not call it 20.10 ?

Why not call it 20.10 ?
I think because the original intent of a monthly program update have been missed for a while.
Given that the last one was 20.7 released in September (09), and if I remember correctly the one before that missed the monthly update time table. Now it just looks like a normal incremental program update version.

This will be a small service pack to 20.8 currently being beta-tested and then released to production soon enough, most probably this week

Compared with previous updates of Avast, version 20.8 seems to have provoked the fewest complaints against a new update that I can remember reading.
-
Does the update take place automatically in the free version?
Do I need to restart my PC or does it update without restarting?
After the PC is powered on, how long should the update take?
Thanks! ;)

@Nunzio77.
You can check your app update settings via the user interface:
Menu>Settings>General>Update
click "More options" to view the dropdown extended menu.
If you have Automatic Update selected, then you will get automatic update.
You may be asked to Restart your PC following the update.

Thank you for the information. :)
I've checked and it's set to automatic update.
I have a "red" warning telling me that it is out of date and the old version is still there.
Will there be the new version after the reboot or do I just have to wait for it to download and install?
Is it specified when a restart is required?
I have recently been using Avast Free and therefore I still do not know the update mechanism on new software releases. ;)
-
@Nunzio77.
Look back at the screenshot I posted above. You will see [CHECK FOR UPDATES] button. What happens when you click on that?

By clicking on them it is updated.
But having set up automatic updating, shouldn't it do everything automatically? I mean, I expected it would update itself, without my intervention.
Also because if I didn't know and I would not have gone into the settings, there is no info on this new update available on the main screen.

Yes, but not everyone gets it at the same time (staged rollout) to minimize server load.

Bug or Omission.
No update of scan history log files: see https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=238500.0
I ran some tests and confirm this bug or omission.
<snip>
After my reply I ran a Quick Scan and that didn't update the Quick Scan.txt file either, so it looks like it isn't just the Smart Scan.
Interestingly if you open the Settings > Protection > Virus Scans > Scan history - expand any very recent scan and that is able to return basic data on the scan. As in the Quick scan that I ran but no update of the C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\report\ file/s.
So the information is stored somewhere ???
But not updating the C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\report\ file/s location.

Manual update through Avast Free for my desktop and laptop
Everything seem to be working as per normal. :)
-
This release breaks my Novastor Backup Image mounting.
I've been using Novastor's Backup products since the 90's. For some time they've had a disk/sector imaging backup capability. Part of the function is being able to mount a volume of a image backup as a lettered drive in Windows. Version 19.5 is certified for Windows 10 which is what I am currently using.
After updating to Avast 20.8 when I mount an image as a drive I can click on that drive in file explorer and explorer opens to show the files and folder in the root of the virtual drive. However if I click on a folder instead of opening I get the mouse wait cursor and the progress bar on the path window. The progress bar gets progressively slower and never reaches the end. I left it once for two hours and it never completed and opened the folder. Disabling all the shields had no effect. Access through a command line with DIR, COPY, and XCOPY hangs up also.
Doing a system restore which puts me back to Avast 20.6.2420 returns normal function. When I mount an image volume as a virtual drive clicking on folders opens without hesitation and I can copy files normally.
Novastor uses "O & O DiskImage Virtual Devices" and a service.
Problem can be recreated by updating Avast to v20.8. Updates on manual because of problems like this.
Window 10 Pro x64 2004 release with current updates.

Why the sudden update to 20.8.2432 ? And does the offline installer link give us this latest version ? .. Thanks

This is a service pack for 20.8 that fixes some last minute issues.

Hi, a few minutes ago we have released a new service-pack which fixes some rare cases with CPU overload. Current version is therefore 20.8.2432

Yep, applies to offline installer as well.

Was the offline installer updated about 30 or 40 minutes or so back when I redownloaded it ? ... Thanks

I don't know why I can't do a startup scan, help me please
the scan starts then restarts after 20 seconds
-
Still no solution to the problem with reboot when trying to use the option Análisis durante el arranque. Two days ago a virus entered my PC and when I tried that option didn´t work. I thought the virus had infected Avast, but later I read at the blog that it was a problem at Avast and it would be solved in the next version. It is still there....
-
I don't know why I can't do a startup scan, help me please

I did it before the penultimate version and it worked without problems.

this concern is not related to the program version but to the virus definitions
https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=238548.msg1563490#msg1563490
I'm rather sure the problem here has nothing to do with a particular version of Avast - because almost all the code of the boot-time scanner resides in virus definitions. So there's no point in downgrading to Avast 20.7 (for example) - it won't help. (Yes, if you install it from an offline installer, you might get some old virus definitions which may not contain the problem - but as soon as the definitions get updated, it won't matter if it's 20.7, 20.8 or other).
-
- Today i wanted delete file from virus chest, but when i touched delete button, Avast GUI disappear, also tray icon disappear (probably crash of whole program). Only restart PC helped in this situation. Avast created mdmp file in logs folder but on this forum i cannot upload it, so i deleted it. This happen only once for me. Maybe is very rare issue i dont know. This happen on new build 2432 on Win 7 64bit.
- Since version 20.7, Avast no longer warn me about new application version when "Ask when an update is available" is set. New version is only visible in settings on update tab, but not in main Avast window/tray icon as before.
-
Even after the various updates and micro updates, 20.8.xxxx still fails to update the Smart Scan report file C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\report\Viruses & Malware.txt
Nor is there an entry for the Smart Scan in the Scan History option in AvastUI > Protection > Virus Scans
So no change/response from my last reporting this in Reply #26 https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=238421.msg1563185#msg1563185 or in the topic I gave a link to.
Personally I couldn't care less about the NOT so Smart Scan or on-demand scans, but many others do and why I have even mentioned it.

Pretty sad but at least I'm being notified.

I found the source of memory "lead" on my installations.
Apparently are caused by the wpad.dat file used to auto setup the proxy server.

Manual update again to 20.8.2432 few days back, so far so gd
Manual update through Avast Free for my desktop and laptop
Everything seem to be working as per normal. :)
-
- Firewall recognizes VPNs - Firewall now knows when you’re using our VPN and won’t classify this as an unknown network. (Avast Premium Security only)
Does the Avast Free recognize that I'm using a VPN? I'm concerned with this update because it looks like a threat to confidentiality. How does it work?
The free version of Avast doesn't have a firewall.
-
I have a question Is it normal that after update I have now 3 AvastUI.exe processes launched, with Avast Software engine server (aswEngSrv.exe) and Avast Software Analyzer (aswidsagent.exe)? I also can't see "Avast Behavior Shield" anymore in my task manager. Is it supposed to be like that?
A screenshot of my task manager with Avast processes:

Yes, that's normal, nothing to worry about.

To me Avast Free has not yet automatically updated to the new version 20.8.2432. (I have the automatic setting of the updates).
Why? How long does it take on average to update automatically after it is published?
Thank you. ;)

The update cycle is to spread/balance the load on servers (when you have hundreds of millions of users), but I would have thought you would have had it by now.
What do you see if you right click on the Avast tray icon and select About Avast ?
My guess is that it would say that there is an update available, etc.
-
After upgrading to this latest version of Avast, I have noticed in event viewer that on random moments i'm getting single errors from CAPI2 with definition: "A certificate chain processed but terminated in a root certificate which is not trusted by the trust provider". Also i spotted that when i turn off my OS, i'm getting an information category error in event viewer about user registry handles leaks and there are few instances, 7 of them are by avastsvc.exe and one of them is lsass.exe. Any ideas why is this happening? I had these "registry leaks" before and repairing and clean reinstall of AV didn't help (It's showing only when Avast is installed) but process lsass.exe was never been there before and i was not getting that many errors about CAPI2, that's why i'm getting worried now.
-
Took me quite a while to figure it out, but "Enable Samba protection" on "Remote Access Shield" is an all-or-nothing deal. When enabled, it shuts down my local network because I transfer lots of files frequently. Seems to me an exclusion option for specific computers and/or the local subnet would be helpful.
Hi, best you post/ask here: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=235069.0

I don't want to click "check for update" now because I want to know when it will update itself and why it hasn't already updated.
-
You have already been told why it might not have updated, there is an update cycle over a period of time to balance server load. All the hundreds of millions of avast users can't update at the same time.
As I suggested checking the Avast tray icon and select About Avast would indicate an update is available, as that command will effectively check what you have installed against the latest version.
It is your choice to wait and see if it does update automatically.

Hi,
What i mean there was a conflict with a avast free component and windows installer few release before this one.
As the issue was reproductible with avast team they correct this problem.
But with this last release the issue is coming back.
As soon as i removed Free avast, windows installer is running without problem.
Thanks for your help.

Hi, not sure what you mean, Microsoft doesn't provide any updates for W7 anymore.
There are still periodic updates "malware removal tool" (KB890830 v5.82 , v5.83, ...) which continue to use the MSI on W7.
The last one for me was on September 9th and I had big difficulties to install it on my 2 w7 (due to avast?).

Hi,
Currently i uninstall freeavast and W7 propose to me Microsoft securitiy essential.
I put this to wait new stable Free avast without the issue.
Hope that they can correct this soon :'(

Any info on (finally) fixing of "Create rescue disk" in near future ?
It is about time

Hello
I'm hoping someone here can help me. I upgraded my Windows 10 system last week. At the end of the upgrade, it advised that Avast wanted to upgrade as well, so I said yes and that upgrade went ahead.
However, somehow during that process Bitlocker has been triggered. I did not set up Bitlocker when I bought my laptop in February this year, so I do not have a recovery key. I've been speaking to Microsoft and they suggested that the Avast update might be responsible for this.
After speaking to Microsoft and Lenovo technocal support for days now, I still have no clear answers and can't get into my computer. I can't even do a clean install of Windows because I'm locked out of the c drive.
If Avast, or any Avast users, are aware of this happening and know what the fix is, I will be forever grateful. Just to confirm, I did not set up Bitlocker so there is no recovery key - I've looked on the appropriate section of Microsoft's settings 50 times in the hope that it might appear, but no!
Also, one last idiosyncratic thing... I'm running Windows 10 Home which Microsoft say is not compatible with Bitlocker. So I'm actually stuck in a paradox!
Thank you in advance,
Anna

It is about time
"Rescue Disk" section is here:
https://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=6.0
I have not tried to create a new Rescue Disk USB with 20.8, but was eventually working OK with 20.7.
If you saying you are having a problem creating a Rescue Disk with version 20.8. If you are, please start a new thread in the Rescue Disk section.
Please indicate Avast version and whether free or paid.
Also Windows version.

We have no idea what you are running on your system that is different to their system/s. It isn't effecting everyone, I haven't had this issue either.

Has program updating been changed for it to actually update automatically instead of still showing massive popup and yellow exclamation mark and you have to confirm it yourself?
