Title: Issue since the latest automatic update - cannot unstall - tried various

I am hoping someone can help me!

Avast recently done an automatic update and since then my CPU is high, all the avast processes are running using a lot of disk space,.

-I've tried to repair, it just gets stuck.

-I tried to remove it the usual way (add/remove) to then re-install but again it gets stuck and nothing happens on trying to un-install.

I then downloaded the avastclear to try that in safe-mode but still nothing, it doesn't open it just opens a blue square with the loading bar going back and forth.

This is what I get when I try to use avast clear, or even download the new beta to try rectify the problem.

its causing me hell on the laptop can anyone please offer some help or any suggestion please?

Post by: DavidR on October 01, 2020, 10:12:54 PM: You don't actually say what avast program and version you have installed, so it is kind of hard to suggest what do do.

Only in the last day or so version 20.8.2429 (build 20.8.5653.561) was released.
Is that the version that you have ?

If not I suggest that you do a manual check for program updates.

I tried the manual update check and again it just gets stuck as below

Of course tried various times, restart, safe mode as above etc. I'd appreciate anyones help to fix this.

Post by: DavidR on October 02, 2020, 12:27:13 AM: First you shouldn't need to run avastclear.exe from safe mode, is that what you did ?

It is designed to be run from normal mode. Having run it in normal mode, it handles the restart into safe mode.

I tried both unfortunately nothing - the website mentions to start in safe mode though.

"Download avastclear.exe on your desktop
Start Windows in Safe Mode
Open (execute) the uninstall utility
If you installed Avast in a different folder than the default, browse for it. (Note: Be careful! The content of any folder you choose will be deleted!)
Click REMOVE
Restart your computer"

Post by: DavidR on October 02, 2020, 12:39:20 PM: I'm out of ideas on how to proceed from here, other than trying a system restore to a point before the avast update. Buy if you have changed other things and or the system restore point is fairly old it may have an adverse effect on other things.

For now I have tried to draw Avast attention to this topic.

I see you have also joined this topic - https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=238442.0 - which at least has some Avast Team input by lukas.munduch.

Did you try to install the latest version "offline" on top of the version you can't uninstall?

I have no idea if it can help you but it might be worth a try.
But it can put the avast folder back in order, especially for what is useful for an uninstall.

Really grateful for the suggestion i'll try this again but it didn't work the first time, same issue as when I try use the uninstaller I basically got the loading/splash page as such but it never goes any further.

Genuinely this bug has put me off wanting to continue using Avast as its made the laptop unusable at the moment :( so slow due to the high CPU usage.

- no update possible -stuck
- no uninstall possble -stuck
- no repair possible -stuck (last message came at creating hardlink for c:\programm files\avast ftware\avast\avast_localvc142.crt\*.manifest
to c:\programm files\avast ftware\avast\1031\avast_localvc142.crt\*.manifest if this is any help)

and even worse: also no virus alerts coming from files which I know for sure they contain viruses...!

I have tried, but I was not even able to install it. No effect whatsoever after looking fpr 30 min to the sandclock in the install window :(

I have already tried the uninstall tool several times - no effect.

It seems avast is just not willing to leave my harddisk....
