Title: Cannot hide bookmarks bar in "New Tab"
Post by: eagleizer2 on October 05, 2020, 04:14:47 AM
All other tabs have the bookmarks bar turned OFF, but it will not turn OFF for New Tab.

"Show Bookmarks Bar" is not ticked in the drop-down menu when right-clicking it,
and it's also not activated in settings.

About:

Avast Secure Browser is up to date
Version 85.0.5815.103 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Hello,

this is unfortunately as designed. The same behaviour could be seen in Google Chrome as well.

Or you may try following extension from official Chrome web store which amongst the other features has this ability to hide bookmarks even from 'New Tab'.

Thanks, but you are not correct. I do not have this problem in either Chrome or Opera.
I consider this a bug in the Avast Browser. There is no logic for the Bookmarks Bar to show
when it's turned OFF. Only showing in "New Tab" makes even less sense. This is a nuance
that needs to be fixed.

Cheers :)

Here's a video I just created in Chrome that proves the anomaly.

Yes, and it was also discussed in Google Chrome Support channel:

The easiest way to bypass the problem is to assign a start page and not use the New Tab page.
Doing that eliminates the problem.
I personally would be lost without the Bookmarks Bar.

Even more annoying, it also gets displayed in bank mode. ::)

It's Chromium related. Till that gets fixed, there isn't much Avast can do about it.

Well, if you think Google will fix/change this, good luck. I doubt it.

Chromium needs to fix it. The Chrome browser, as are many other browsers, is based on Chromium. https://www.chromium.org/ (https://www.chromium.org/)

All Chromium stuff is provided by Google.

Yep, else we wouldn't have to deal with an armada of clones. ;)

None of this changes the fact that the question raised isn't an Avast problem.

Well, you and I know that, but the majority of users will just blame the Avast Browser.

Ignorance is bliss. If you read the facts, it's obvious this is not Avast's fault.

Good point, but where should users read the facts, there's no additional info available in ASB.

The facts aren't in the Secure Browser they are in Chrome.

I apologize. Since the New Tab already seems to open Google Search, I did not pay attention
to the details on that page, assuming it was Google.com. I guess the problem is that there is
no way to set the New Tab page in the settings.

In all other browsers, I have Google.com opening in New Tab, which is NOT showing any
Bookmarks bar. I don't see why Avast could not add this simple feature.

And yes, I still blame Avast team for this nuance. ;)

Cheers :)

But in that video, you don't  have the New Tab set to Google.com...

It's a documented Chromium problem.

Opera browser is also Chromium based. Here is New Tab using default settings:
