For some unknown reason my Avast AV which I have had for many years suddenly started to give trouble.
The icon on the taskbar says "You are protected", but neither this icon or the desktop shortcut will open my Avast panel.
I have done a repair twice using the uninstall facility, but still failed. A restart never made any difference.
Without access to the Avast panel I am helpless to read notifications or monitor the program.
As I cannot access the Avast panel I am unable to give you details of my program. The problem only happened on the 9th October and I have no knowledge
of anything that may have influenced this sudden behaviour.
Please, have you a solution to this issue ?
Hopefully as Avast says "You are protected" I assume it is doing just that and will update itself.
My OS is Windows 10 version 1909.

Not sure what you mean by "Repair using the uninstall facility"
However, all I can suggest are the instructions for a "Clean Install"
First, be sure to get rid of all remnants of any prior installed AV(s)..!!
https://support.avast.com/article/11/ (https://support.avast.com/article/11/)
Then:
1. Download Avast Free Antivirus:https://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup_offline.exe (https://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup_offline.exe)
2. Follow instructions:https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility)(Run this tool for all prior installed Avast versions..!!)
3. Reinstall Avast with the downloaded installer from point 1.
4. Reboot

@ wittmann44
It looks like a typo in the link, there appears to be a leading space in the URL which messed up the displayed URL formatting in the post.
Corrected URLs
1. Download Avast Free Antivirus:https://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup_offline.exe (https://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup_offline.exe)
2. Follow instructions:https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility)(Run this tool for all prior installed Avast versions..!!)
They both work now.

I haven't had that happen before. Not sure where typo was. :-\

You're welcome.
If you actually quote your post in the reply window you will see it. there was a space before the url and using the URL with name function it creates a double https followed by that space and then the URL, which becomes broken.

May I please ask - it would be more convenient in my case to use Revo-Uninstaller, can I do this ?

I personally only use the Specific Vender's Uninstall Utility when uninstalling any Security Software completely.
However it's you machine your choice. :)

SURPRISE !!
I have a restart problem involving name and password, so do not restart too often unless forced to. Eventually I will attend to this problem, but at present cannot take a risk of being locked out.
I had to restart for a program update and when the computer was live again, the Avast shortcut now produces a panel and everything is back to normal again - Avast panel now shows up and there is no longer a problem.
Thank you all for your kind comments, much appreciated.

When all else fails, shut it totally down, wait a while and start it back up.
Works for many things powered by electric or battery.
