Title: Free AntiVirus - Smart Scan not completing or allowing a new scan
Post by: mjchassen on October 12, 2020, 02:43:10 PM
Recently Smart Scan seems to consistently stop after reporting on browsers, out of date app and malware, but it does not return to the point of allowing a new smart scan.  Same manifestation in scan "notifications" - it will not allow me to continue to the end, clearing the notifications.  Windows 10 machine, but it has worked for most of my time on W10.  Avast version updated last week - no effect.   Trying to avoid an uninstall/reinstall.  Any and all feedback appreciated.

Repair Avast:
1. Avast GUI -> Settings -> Troubleshooting
2. Click on 'REPAIR APP'.
3. Follow instructions.
4. Reboot.

1. Download Avast Free Antivirus: https://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup_offline.exe
2. Follow instructions: https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed Avast versions..!!)
3. Reinstall Avast with the downloaded installer from point 1.
4. Reboot.

This sounds like it might be the same issue I've experienced as reported in https://forum.avast.com/?topic=238607.0 (https://forum.avast.com/?topic=238607.0).

In my case, I do not have the components installed for browser checks and out of date software so it just goes right into the malware check that does not complete.

When I have some time, I'll try the full reinstall.

I think the reinstall worked.

First I just uninstalled and reinstalled. Right after the install the first smart scan worked, but then I rebooted and it failed.

I then did a Safe Boot and used the Avastclear program to uninstall, then reinstalled. The first scan worked. I rebooted and it worked again. I noticed that the first scan took a while in the advanced threats section but the next time it ran much quicker through that.

Next step was to restore the settings I saved right before uninstalling. The next scan ran OK, but still taking longer in the advanced threats section. I don't know why one time it ran very quickly, but it does seem to be working now every time.

I do not have the Software Updater and Browser Cleanup components installed so they are not part of the Smart Scan. The remainder takes 90 seconds totally. I notice that the progress from 60% to 83% is the slow part at about 3 seconds to move each 1 percent.
