How about making the undocumented/hidden geek:area function more visible ?

We are constantly having to tell users with related issues in the forums how to find and enter the 'secret handshake' geek:area of Avast.

By all means have a warning that changing these settings can effect your protection, etc. etc.
A bit like the warning in Firefox about:config area.
EDIT attached image.

Thanks for the consideration, I too feel it is just too hidden.
Given it isn't documented anywhere in the application and there are several functions in there that shouldn't be hidden in this way

Where is Avast Leak Alerts in free version ?...

We need to keep it in Beta a little longer but should make it to the upcoming release 20.10 by the end of the year.

FWIW  I also would like to see our 'geek:area' more easily accessible.
I realize there are advanced settings in this area however I agree as mentioned, there are several functions that need to be accessible.

Why ?
What errors are you getting ?

No problem here, just downloaded the avast free off-line installer.

See attached images, I changed the file name to avast_free_antivirus_setup_offline-20-9.exe for clarity.

See attached images, I changed the file name to avast_free_antivirus_setup_offline-20-9.exe for clarity.

When I click on either online installers, a  new tab in Chrome opens and a dialog appears asking where to save and allows me to change file name.
When I click on either offline installers, a new tab opens for a second then closes itself with no dialog appearing.
I  have successfully been downloading offline installer for years just not working today.

Update: if I copy the offline installer address, then paste in address bar for new tab in Chrome then it downloads, so only problem is clicking on original link doesn't work

What if you try right clicking on the offline installer you want and select Save As ?
That's the way I normally do it, using firefox (my default browser), I don't use Chrome, so I don't know if it has that option (I would be surprised if it didn't, its fairly common).

You have to enable "Insecure content" in site settings. You cannot download offline installer without this change if you use Chrome.

You have to enable "Insecure content" in site settings. You cannot download offline installer without this change if you use Chrome.
Unsecure refers to http websites which isn't the case for the Avast downloads.
I have no problems downloading the files while using Chrome without enabling insecure content.

What protection? This settings is for Avast forum only. You want tell me this forum is malicious? And of course, this can be reverted after download.
Problem should find Avast members because problem is on their side. Online installer download works properly.

Why isn't the problem for everyone who downloads?
The site can also be hijacked or stored as unsecured in the cache?

What security related extension do you have installed?
I use only ublock origin in default settings, nothing else. As you can see i am not only one with this problem. In other browsers i can download offline installer without issue, but only in chrome i need enable insecure content. So chrome thinks that file is for unknown reason not secure, or that server where that file is stored is not secured (Maybe unsecure https certificate?). I am not expert but online installer can be downloaded anytime that is strange.

Just tried it in other PC with chrome, there it works! But i found that https link pointed to http. So even i click to HTTPS offline inslaller link, it downloads from HTTP source. In chrome downloads appear http link. There will be problem i think. So there is in other hand strange why here chrome dont block that download, he should be blocked here too.

The https link in the forum for the offline installation file redirects to an http source.

See attached image in Reply #13 it shows the redirected link to hxxp://iavs9x--------avccdn.net which also has avg in the path, strange and I thought Avast bought AVG  :P
https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=239611.msg1567418#msg1567418

So it is this redirection to an http source, that some browser settings will baulk at.

So why Avast don't start off with the full https download path (as with the free on-line installation path) without a redirect required ?

For developers.

Do you foresee in the free version with the next releases to remove the annoying advertising popups passing to the premium version?

In my opinion they are not effective in making users switch from the free to the Premium version, indeed it is a deterrent in the installation and use of the free version which is an excellent version compared to the competition.  ;)

Premium version messages within the dashboard are fine but I would eliminate the annoying and sometimes misleading popups for novice users.  :)

Does the silent mode pop up pop-ups when malware is detected?

1.  In my experience (using avast free) this doesn't completely remove them.

2.  Silent Mode means just that, you won't receive an Avast Alert when malware is detected, you will be completely unaware of it.
Actions on malware detection would happen according to the Avast Settings.  Ordinarily I have mine set to Ask (which won't happen with Silent Mode) as I prefer not to have Actions happening antonymously.

This is why I proposed to remove them completely because they are useless and it is a cause of non-use of the free version for many users, who certainly do not switch to premium but choose other free antivirus.

My answers don't address the worth or pointlessness of ads in the free version, only your specific questions you asked.  That question you would have to ask the bean counters as to their worth.

Free programs require advertising to support the development of the program.

Sure that's right but popups are annoying and there are other free programs that don't have them. It's okay to advertise in the dashboard which is not annoying.

I have that option unchecked and I'm sure I still get the very occasional avast popup.
I certainly haven't put avast into silent mode.

For me I popups in the free version aren't that much of a hassle factor.

Esempio: https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file/73bb7e7d0743d40a1d967497a5fbb79c07132eb15a546fa25bbecaf43993a1d2/detection

Qualcuno mi può dare maggiori chiarimenti? Forse sono io non molto esperto... :)

Inoltre mi è capitato anche di estrapolare file malware che Avast Free riconosce solo se sono eseguiti ma non quando vengono estrapolati dal file zippato, pur essendo su Virus Total riconosciuti da Avast.
Esempio: https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file/73bb7e7d0743d40a1d967497a5fbb79c07132eb15a546fa25bbecaf43993a1d2/detection

Qualcuno mi può dare maggiori chiarimenti? Forse sono io non molto esperto... :)

Excuse me ... :D I forgot to translate it ..  :D

I have done some tests with malware and I don't understand why if a zipped file, containing malware recognized by Avast Free, is scanned, Avast Free does not find the malware. If the file is extracted from the zip Avast Free recognizes it and deletes it.

In addition, I also happened to extract malware files that Avast Free recognizes only if they are executed but not when they are extracted from the zipped file, despite being on Virus Total recognized by Avast.
Example: https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file/73bb7e7d0743d40a1d967497a5fbb79c07132eb15a546fa25bbecaf43993a1d2/detection

Can anyone give me more clarification? Maybe I'm not very experienced ... :)

The file isn't dangerous until it's executed at which time Avast block it.
(Extraction is not execution.)

For the most part, zip (archive) files aren't scanned (unless they are self-extracting archives/executables) by the resident scanner (Avast Free or Premium) as they are inert until unpacked at which point they would be scanned.

Extraction should actually scan the file as it then falls under a newly created file (especially if it is an executable) as you mentioned.

Yes, for this reason it seemed strange to me that the extracted executable file was not recognized by Avast Free in the extraction phase but is recognized in the execution phase. Others, on the other hand, were eliminated during the extraction phase without being carried out.

Is it possible to reduce the startup time of the Avast Free icon in the status bar when starting and / or restarting the PC?

In my PC it takes almost 1 minute to appear ...
I obviously think it also depends on the PC characteristics, but I ask if it will be possible in the next versions to reduce the icon's startup times.  :)

You need to realize that the display of the icon and the actual start of your protection
are different. Protection starts early on, but the icon appears much later. I'm not sure if Windows
or Avast determines exactly when the icon appears.

I found there is a bug in the interface.

Sometimes when I go into protection> virus scans there are no scans, there is just "other scans". See Attachment.

To make the other scans reappear I need to create a custom scan.

Does he do it to someone else?

This bug should be fixed.

avast block screen mirroring by miracast

Hi It appears the lastest avast premium is blooking miracast connections.
Symptoms
w10 v20h2 -- last ver and all microsoft patches
tell
with firewall enabled the pc will connect to the bush wirless display / tv and appear to connect.
On the tv we get a mesage connected to wireless display. However the laptop display does nto appear on the tv screen.
I think the firewall is blocking the ip packets comming back from the tv to tell w10 to change the projection mode on the laptop and that a econd screen is now avalaiable.
Disabling the firewall makes miracast work.
Wifi for the pc is enabled and avast has its profile as private.

Any suggestions on how to get miracast working with the firewall enabled.

Robert

in the past  2 weeks or so,  I get a box in the center of my screen that pops up, but its empty, does not say anything in it at all
as well as the AVAST icon on my task bar.

I have to close it before I can do any web browsing.
then,  every 10-20 seconds, it pops up, and goes away by itself.  but it stops anything I am doing and interrupts for 5 seconds
I can not continue with anything for 5 seconds every 10-20 seconds.
it stops any video I am watching,
it stops any web page that is loading
it is more of a problem then anything else AVAST is guarding me from
it IS the problem its supposed to stop

I am running WIN 7  64 bit  NO SP1
if AVAST cant behave, I may have to drop the service ( uninstall )  and use a lesser company that does not interrupt me

Looks like last releases broke computers. A lot of unwanted messages from Avast. And a lot of URL:Blacklist for any websites I visit. Also I read here you block big websites without reason. Please fix you program.

More details required, before any fix could be applied if required, e.g. what unwanted messages and what sites, etc. etc.
