1. Use your current Antivirus Software, Keep it Up to Date
2. If a file smells fishy, if an attachment looks dubious, and if a program seems suspect: create an email and attach the file.
Address the message to scan@virustotal.com, put "SCAN" in the subject and press Send.
Provided the file was smaller than 10 MB, you will get back an analysis performed by numerous anti-virus products,
telling you whether your funny file is indeed dangerous or can be opened more or less safely.
It may, at times, be prudent to engage this additional checking by VirusTotal (http://www.virustotal.com/en/indexf.html)
