Title: What is it & how fo I get rid of it?

I've been getting this virus in a file called dtran.exe
It's seen by avast.
I'm running win xp pro.

What is the location of the file? (full path)

According to pestcontrol (http://www.pestpatrol.com/pestinfo%5Cd%5Cd-tran_trojan.asp) dtran.exe itself is a trojan

The path is C:\WINDOWS\walker\

The name is Win32 Trojan-Gen (upx!)

So I assume you can just move the beast to the Virus Chest, that's all there's to do for now...

That is correct; however, it continues to return.

You can set the on-access scanner protection level to High (click the avast (a) ball tray icon to do this) - this way, the file will be detected immediately after saved to the HDD.

Yes, but it would be nice if there was a better way of dealing with it:)
