Updated with voracious enthusiasm.  PUP detection very handy.  I looked out of the window of my man cave to see a stray dog in my front garden.  The bitcoin, etc. stuff is very nice to have.

Separation of tools from the rest of PUP's is appreciated. Because of this I only used PUP detection for on-demand scans. But now I can use it for real-time too.

Though I wonder how is with PUP detection and breaking of installers. Sometimes some installers just crap out when PUP is detected, even though they give you option to uncheck it within the installer. But you can't get to that point because PUP detected inside breaks it. At least it did in the past.

Thank you for the update!!!

I think this link needs an update as well:
https://www.avast.com/de-de/installation-files

If you download the offline installer "Avast Antivirus Free" on the right-hand side, there is still an old version of Avast.

Thank you for troubleshooting!  8)

It appears to be working for me (using firefox), I tried the offline.exe setup file, it redirects to another location, see attached images.  So it would appear that the redirect isn't working for you.  You could try copying the url in my first image and see if that works directly.

Very strange. It would not work in the Avast Secure Browser erither.

It is just a location, but the file name at the end of the URL is for avast omni as my other images indicate.

As they say it is just a depository (have to be careful with that word) ;)

Not sure if the issue im having started with the update or not but the last day or so, videos on Facebook play about 5 seconds in then i get an error and the video stops. Ive tried restarting windows & clearing history/cache. It doesnt seem to happen on regular Chrome, just on Avast Secure Browser. It says my version is up to date Version 88.0.7977.151 (Official Build) (64-bit). Any Ideas??? Thanks

Still have following memory leak since 20.7 ...

Hi,
I found the the source of the problem, is the wpad.dat file used to auto define the proxy (or no proxy).

Sorry for delay.
Version 20.8.5684.602  not solved my situation.  Same behavior, soon I connect network cable Avsta start eating all memory.
It happens on some networks, not on others.  Or start after some time.
My network are the culprit? Why special have on these networks?

My test procedure is this:
Disable swap/paging on window, avoid system to use paging, a avast just eat all ram and killed by the kernel (I think).
Start computer with network cable disconnected (no wifi).
Open taskmanager, and Avast GUI.
Connect network cable and watch rise of memory usage by Avast.

If have some thing on my network causing the Avast memory issue, what can be?
My firewall is a linux machine, very simple, just for NAT, no complex packet filtering, multi internet access and Squid proxy (all most disabled).
I drop all forwarding from offending host. No change.
Dropped all input to firewall. NOW, avast no eating memory.
I opened port 80, and Avast start eating memory again.  What Avast accessing? Check the webserver log.
Avast getting the wpad file for proxy definition on this network. Renamed wpad.dat file, and try again.
Whitout wpad, no problem, avast try to get file, get a 404 and nothing happens.

Code: [Select]
The log on webserver (lighttpd 1.4.19):
10.0.103.91 wpad - [09/Oct/2020:09:36:43 -0300] "GET /wpad.dat HTTP/1.1" 200 94 "-" "Mozilla/5.0 AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/72.3.3626.1895 Safari/537.36 Avastium (20.8.2432)"

wpad.dat content:

function FindProxyForURL(url, host)
         return "DIRECT";
}

I hope this information helps to solve the problem.

Tanks, Paulino.

I confirm, it comes from the proxy !

Disabling the option "Automatically detect settings" of proxy under Windows, will no more cause the memory leak.
Activating it again, and Avast eats again all memory ...

The same for me - over 20% CPU usage just after updating (computer reset).

To me it does it only when I download large files (1-2 GB) for example, which I can rename after a few minutes as it is in use by Avast and the CPU reaches 15% -20% of use. At rest PC it is almost 0%.

So these micro updates are downloaded and installed with definitions? Excuse me but I'm still not familiar with Avast's update system and its versions. I'm new to using it and slowly I'm getting to know it.
So there is a major update and then there are the micro updates that are downloaded and installed with the definition update?
Is streaming instead the connection to the cloud?
Thank you. :)

Hey, sry if this isnt the right place to ask, but I really need some advice..

Avast keeps telling me when I log into a game called Old School Runescape, that it has secured me against a threat infected with a 'Botnet:Blacklist' from the connection 'tcp://81.31.201.136:43594'
It happened suddenly an have never gotten this warning before in the 4 years I have played that game.

I didn't have a VPN at the moment it happened, but i have the avast secureline VPN now.
I have tried to restore pc to factory setting (if I had a virus on my pc) and it sadly didnt solve the problem.
Also scanned the entire PC, both ssd's i have and the folder the game is located in.

Any ideas what to do?
Are my pc infected or is it a false warning?

Thanks in advance and sorry for my bad English  :-X

my Avast Free Antivirus (German ed., os: W7 Pro) had been updated at least twice since the Feb. 12 update (build 21.1.5968.561), most recently on Feb. 18 (build 21.1.5968.630).
I assume that these were the "micro-updates" which rocksteady mentioned (#44)?

By these updates, the vast majority of the files in
     C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast
had not been changed, they are as of Feb. 12.

There are four new files (no predecessor versions available), dating from Feb. 18:
    aswAv.dll.161367121258202
    aswAv.dll.sum.161367121258202
    TuneupSmartScan.dll.161367121258202
    TuneupSmartScan.dll.sum.161367121258202

Two files probably have been updated (predecessor versions are available):
    aswCmnBs.dll, as of Feb. 16
    AvastNM.json, as of Feb. 13
Probably new:
aswCmnBs.dll.sum, as of Feb. 16 (without predecessor version).

That's all. I am somewhat concerned and would like to know whether this is what your updates look like.

Thank you!

Hi! I just realized that spam protection is no longer present on avast premium. Why? it is not even installable anymore. Until a few months ago he was present.

Concerned about what? Are you having a problem?

Thank you for asking.

Currently there is no major problem but I don't want to get one.

I felt alarmed when there were updates shortly after the Feb.-12-update. I remember for sure that there had been two updates, but maybe there had been even three.

Then took a closer look at the Avast folder and wondered whether this is what an update has to look like, the majority of files being unchanged, and some new files added.

I wanted to clarify this before opening Avast again but it's impossible
- to change the update setting from "Ask when ... available" to "Manual update" and
- to deactivate Avast in the autostart.

(I hope that I express myself right, I'm not native English speaking.)

It's also impossible to fix something that's not broken.
Have a nice day and enjoy no problems.

I beg your pardon, but I think you didn't understand me right. I did not ask you to fix a problem. I asked you to give me an information.
I had told you which files are in my Avast folder as the result of the two (or more) updates since Feb. 12. Finallly I wrote that I "would like to know whether this is what your updates look like."
In other words, my question is: is it plausible that these updates did "only"
- generate the five new files and changed two other files which I had listed AND
- did not touch all the other Avast files.

for me, micro-updates were followed by the "what's new with 21.1" screen after rebooting my computer.
It seemed to me that avast had solved this problem few versions ago and that the screen should only appear after a main update and not after a simple micro update like now ?
I may be mistaken to have read this few monthes ago  ???

Micro updates (possibly a bug fix) can be delivered as a part of the Virus definitions and "engines" these generally wouldn't get any program update notification, as it isn't specifically a program update in the true sense.

@ vitesa
If it is your intention to disable avast at startup (my bold text in the quote), you are going to have bigger issues than small micro updates. Avast is designed as a resident on access scanner and crippling it leaves you at risk.  Doing that would mean you would get zero update notifications as it wouldn't be running.

You could however switch Avast to Passive mode, but as mentioned you would be at risk and you wouldn't be getting any updates micro, virus definitions or otherwise.  You would in essence require another resident scanner installed or you would have no protection.

Personally I don't pre-empt problems, rather I only react-respond to problems, life is too short to turn over every leaf to see if there is something untoward under it.

I have only ever seen these "Whats New popups" directly after a Program Update, after which a system restart is required to apply the changes. I have  not had this after any micro-update.  However on my win10 laptop I rarely restart it but just put in into hibernation (close the lid).

As usual, after an update. the bank mode is no longer working.
How can it be possible? Every single time.

This need not be a Browser problem.
Right-clicking on the AV system tray icon also brings up the option to open Bank Mode.

Thank you, @ DavidR, for your warning. I didn't intend to disable Avast for a long time but only until my issue would have been clarified.

o.k., i stop turning over the leaves and be confident that everything is fine :-) At least I have learned that there exists something like "mikro-updates" which don't look line normal updates.

Avast Premium  bug report

I want to report bug in recent version of Avast Premium. After  update to newest version CPU goes to 100% usage and device is unusable. From task manager I can see that System Interrupts are using most of CPU. I have reinstall system(windows 7 64bit ) with all updates , I have put SSD drive in laptop, everything works fine till I install Avast Premium and whole story start from beginning. System interrupt are  very high. If I uninstall Avast everything goes back to normal. Could you sort out  this issue in next update. I will mention that I have had Avast for many years and issues till now.

Short answer Yes.

But have you looked at the Massive (NOT) amount of resources they are using, you must be running something in the background when you took the screenshot.  Mine is using even less resources as I'm only browsing/posting this.

The first 3 check the Properties and you will see they are the avastUI.exe.

Yes I was downloading a large file with Chrome.

Yes I was downloading a large file with Chrome.

I would say that would be normal, even low as that large file would be being scanned during the download, so there would be web shield and file system shield at work (probably in the 2nd instance of Avast Service in your image).

I just installed Avast Premium, and it pops up that when I go to settings - apps allowed or blocked - add, Avast closes. The same thing happens if I try to add apps so as not to disturb,,the interface is closed with Avast ui error.

It's a fresh installation and I'm already trying to repair.. any idea?

Thanks

No need to post the same question over and over again.
