Title: Problem with mails and thunderbird
Post by: gazalou on November 25, 2006, 12:53:48 PM
Hello,

I just installed avast on my win 98 se computer and i think I have a problem with mails scanning.

Avast 4.7 Home doesn't seem to scan incoming and outgoing mails.
I tried to send and receive mails with attached "eicar.com" files.
and avast didn't say anything about them.

I also checked the checkboxes to add an avast footer to my outgoing mails but nothing happens.

This is the second installation I try, i think I answer correctly the questions about mail during installation.
I'm using thunderbird.Can anybody help me ?
Note : When I try to run the downloaded "eicar.com" file, Avast stops it correctly.
Thanks.

Hello and Welcome :)

First - what e-mail account are you using? Second - did you run the Mail Protection Wizard (Start -> Programs -> avast! antivirus -> Mail Protection Wizard ) of avast! ?

Thanks xmas.

I run the mail protection wizard and in the help I found that I had to manually change
my pop and smtp servers to 127.0.0.1.

It works now.
I would have preferred avast to do that himself.

Well the mail protection is fully automatic on NT based systems (WinXP, WinNT, Win2000 ...). But on older systems like Win98 you need to do it manual. Thats all. Glad I could help :)

Has the Wizard changed in more recent versions?  It used to be that if you ran it (with mailer shut down, of course) then it did automatically change the port settings in the mailer to localhost.
Plus it "remembered" the original port settings and changed them back if you shut down or removed the email provider.

I think not... I mean, is it now replacing 127.0.0.1 by localhost, is this what you're trying to say?

Not really, Tech.  Most systems treat "localhost" and 127.0.0.1 as identical, which they normally are.

I just meant that back when I was running under 98SE, the Wizard automatically changed the mailer's port settings, you didn't need to do that manually.  And with NT systems (e.g. XP) the "proxy" is of course transparent and no change is made to the mailer.

I know, it's true... but when I've used in the past, MPW uses 127.0.0.1 and not the word 'localhost' as seems it's being used now (not sure...).
