Title: pro not allowing downloads
Post by: st on December 10, 2006, 07:14:39 PM
I can't seem to download anything, but I can use the internet just fine.
I just installed avast! today, and I am wondering if I did not set it up right.
I also want to know if Avast! PRO needs a firewall.

avast is only an antivirus, not a firewall. You'll need a full firewall.
Suggestions here: http://www.firewallleaktester.com/tests_overview.php or http://www.thefreecountry.com/security/firewalls.shtml or http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=22742.0;topicseen

Do you already have a firewall? If so, avast components should be able to connect the internet.
Do you have any other antivirus in this computer?

Yes you need a firewall.

PLease post your operating system and which providers you have running. Normanly avast doesn't stop you from downloading anything, unless it's infected of course.

OK.

Computer 1:
xp home

Computer 2:
x64

script blocking
internet mail
IM
Network shield
P2P
standard shield
web shield

The internet works fine on both computers.
File sharing works both ways.
I can use the printer as well.

I cannot download anything on either computer.

Which firewall do you use?
Did you have any other antivirus in the past in this computer?
Which is your operational system?

Okay. check Tools/internet options, clik the security tab, custom level button, scroll down to download. Is it enabled?

Yes.
Everything is either set to "enable" or "prompt."

Should I just through my computers away and get new ones?
Maybe a Dell.

Would you try downloading an old version of Ewido ( say 4.0.0.172)

http://www.filehippo.com/download_ewido/?668

I know this is an odd request but I had a similar problem a while back and found that Ewido could download when nothing else would.

I don't have a router and don't know much about them, other than some have a built in firewall. I don't know if they can be set to prevent downloads or not.

Hang in there. There are a lot of very knowledgable people on this forum. Someone has the answer.

Meantime try mauserme's suggestion.

Only other thing I can think of is are you using a downloader manager?

Can you access this site?

http://www.ewido.net/en/

Also, what were you originally trying to download?

I have tried various files from private websites to cnet.
a ".pdf"  and several ".exe" files.  The Avast! update. Ewido.
nothing will download.

Did the download problem start immediately after installing avast! or sometime later?

Because you haven't wrapped the URL path in url tags, the ? in the string might cause a problem depending on browser, also you don't need the ?668 http://www.filehippo.com/download_ewido/ takes you to the same page, don't know if that will make a difference for 'st'

@ 'st'
I thought that was from you and not mauserme, I thought it was you who couldn't access the site.

Are you using a download manager to try and download or the browser and which browser are you using ?
I'm not familiar with the x64 version of XP so I don't know if there are any other security hoops you have to jump through.

What happens when you right click and select save as ?

mauserme,

It is hard to tell.
I have set up this network between the two computers, and installed Avast! before any downloads.

DavidR,

No download manager.
I can save backrounds as html.

Unless someone else has a better idea, as a test I would try taking avast! temporarily out if the equation to see if the problem persists.

If you can download another free av (eg AVG or Antivir trial version) while avast is still installed do so, take the computer offline, uninstall avast!, reboot, and install the alternate av.

If this can't be done try downloading to CD from a computer that is not experiencing this problem, then unistall/install.

Glad you got it!

Welcome to the forum.

It was set to "enable."
It is good to have knowledgeable people to bounce thoughts off of when I am trying to figure stuff out.
My dogs are very little help, and my wife... well; she can type.
Anyway, thank you again.
