Hi, all. Please welcome the newest version of Avast AV: 21.3 (21.3.2459)
Major public announcements
- Better scan performance — We’ve made a lot of small performance improvements to various security components (running on background)
- Improved Rescue Disk — We’ve added a portable web browser to our Rescue Disk so you can search the web even when Windows isn’t working
- Fewer distractions — We no longer show pop-up messages when your antivirus is open
- Passive Mode fix — We’ve fixed a bug that would sometimes disable Passive Mode soon after it was turned on
Bug-fix and improvement highlights for hardcore fans:
- Because of an expiring MS certificate for signing drivers, we had to block updates and installations of users with outdated/unpatched versions of Win7 (up to KB3033929). Unless they update their OS, they will stay on 21.2 version.
- Implemented Countdown (auto-close) of Cyber Capture dialogs
- Additional Rescue Disk improvements (postponing toolkit installation until MSI installation finishes, adding retries to downloading RCD files, etc.)
- Fixed cases when both our Firewall and Windows firewall were running simultaneously
- Fixed issue where the restart dialog didn’t appear in Silent Mode
- Fixed issues where our uninstall survey was not displayed
- Fixed issue when the UI didn’t show the correct state of IDP (Behavioral Shield) features
- Some of those scan optimizations mentioned in our public release notes include: Startup, registry callbacks, behavioral events, on-exec DLLs scanning, identified opportunities to skip some scans, etc.)
As usual a big thanks goes to the team for yet another successful release!

Thanks Slavo, spreading the news... :)

The button to restart the computer after the update did not work. (Omni)
I had to restart the computer myself using the Windows restart feature.
-
Thanks, just about to do a manual update.

Hello,
what is new still running service wsc_proxy.exe? Thank you.
Hello TheOwner, wsc_proxy.exe is component responsible for communication with Windows Security Center / Action Center. It was a service process (with automatic startup) on Windows 10 only. Now, it is service process for all supported operating systems. This change was necessary because of the expiration of MS cross signing certificates. This process executable must fulfill special signature requirements to be able to register/communicate with Windows Security Center.

I still see the occasional popup message but they are fewer and fewer is definitely better. They can occur when the Avast GUI is not open.
Avast software is nonetheless in a very good place and I think that I have justifiable confidence in its continued protection. I can put up with the occasional popup as long as I not am not continually assailed with warnings about my camera possible being hijacked. I put a handmade plastic cover over the thing.

Thanks for the new release :)

Good to see performance optimizations. We rarely see those.

"Fewer distractions — We no longer show pop-up messages when your antivirus is open"
What does this mean? Pop-up messages still seem to occur as frequently as previously.
-
- Because of an expiring MS certificate for signing drivers, we had to block updates and installations of users with outdated/unpatched versions of Win7 (up to KB3033929). Unless they update their OS, they will stay on 21.2 version.
Does this also apply to virus definitions or just the application version?

Application, you'll still received virus definition updates.

What I think they've done is make avast! not display those popups when you have avast!'s main interface open. When it's closed, you'll see the same frequency of popups as before.

I hardly ever open the User Interface. :)

What is it for ???? ;D ;D ;D

Warning me about camera privacy seems ridiculous when I have disabled the camera/microphone driver software. Obviously Avast Free does not check the driver status.
-
Hello, guys, please could you move downloadable content under secure domain?
I see that offline downloading goes through http://iavs9x.avg.u.avcdn.net/iavs9x/avast_omni_setup_offline.exe - it is HTTP protocol and ASB blocks download
thanks

Have you restarted the system? If no luck,
try the following, Repair Avast:
Open the Avast User Interface > Menu > Settings > Troubleshooting > Repair App. > Restart the Computer or,
Control Panel> Program and Features (Add/remove program)>Select Avast> Select Repair. Reboot when completed

Thanks Bob.... done all that with no luck.

NICE UP PERFORMANCE

So with this new version the annoying pop-up advertisements that appear at the bottom right are still there or not?

So with this new version the annoying pop-up advertisements that appear at the bottom right are still there or not?
Take a wild guess if you are using the Free Version, this wasn't what was being talked about.
"Fewer distractions — We no longer show pop-up messages when your antivirus is open"
So if the avast UI isn't already open - then I would expect there to be no change.

So a useless update for this aspect. How many and for how long one has the interface open?? It is always closed and therefore the pop-ups are always seen.

No, because this wasn't the context the update was for, not reducing the number of popups, but to stop receiving multiple popups when you have the AvastUI Open.
If you are trying to get rid of popups I suggest you purchase Avast Premium or learn to live with it. I would imaging you would have to have the UI open all of the time, not for any length of time not to have this occur, if you are simply trying to dodge the popups. I'm sure Avast have thought of that prior to this change.
I have only been using Avast Free for 17 years and it doesn't bother me that much, at times it make me smile as to the stupidity/dumbness of some of them.
-
Like David, if you're using the free version, it's something that's a fact of life.
You either except it or, by a premium version, or find something else.
I look at it this way, https://youtu.be/PkAdgFu6su8

"Fewer distractions — We no longer show pop-up messages when your antivirus is open"
It's a bit confusing to say "antivirus" instead of its UI... an antivirus (literally) must always be open to protect us in real time.
In any case if avast had been clear enough in its release notes, it would have avoided many queries and the above messages.
Users of the free version may be able to create a scheduled task to open and minimize the UI at computer startup, no?
-
Oh what can I say ... I'll have to deal with it ... :) The important thing is to be protected and not suffer slowdowns on the PC. ;)

When I disable any shield, after a few minutes the red "x" of the avast icon on the taskbar disappears. So I can't tell if I have deactivated shields or not.

Unless you've disabled the shield forever, it will start functioning again when it's reached it stop time limit.
Once that happens, the red x will disappear.

Yes, I know. But what happens is that the shield is still deactivated and the x that indicates it disappears by itself. I think its a bug or something

You are posting in a topic that is almost a year old - not a great idea - the latest Avast version is 23.2 see topic https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=322940.0
If you are using this version post in that topic and give your operating system version number.
If so, give this information in that topic:
Do you mean Avast suggested a program update ?
Or a program Repair, or a program/system restart ?
-
Almost two years old even
