Title: New PC
Post by: Andy DB on January 16, 2007, 10:28:07 PM
I am running Avast Home with 2 year updates on my current PC. I have a new PC ready to be unpacked. I am currently saving all my current data to CD for file transfer. What is the best way to transfer the Avast program files? I also have deleted my registration key e-mail!

Help would be welcome.

You can't have the Home version with 2 years of updates, as the free registration period (updates) is 14 months, you then renew again free and get a further 14 months.

Did you pay for this, if so where ?

You can't transfer the program in this way as it has registry entries and files in the system folder as well and needs to be installed. Just download the latest version of avast Home at avast.com and save it to your HDD and copy to CD, etc.), somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you install on the new system.

Complete the avast! 4 Home Registration (http://www.avast.com/i_kat_207.php?lang=ENG) form and you will receive an email from register @ avast.com (without the spaces) with your registration key.

Save the email and use this with your new system.

Your right DavidR, I have Avast v4.7 anti-virus Resident protection with avast on-access scanner.

So how does this affect transfering the program files?

You don't transfer avast from your other computer.  Just download avast home from http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html and then register for a free key here http://www.avast.com/i_kat_207.php

As has been said you can't simply transfer the files because the installation creates registry entries in order for it to run, etc.

My concerns about the version you had stem from your comment "I am running Avast Home with 2 year updates on my current PC." I thought you were talking about the registration for free VPS updates as a part of the free license they only last for 14 months. There have been some websites fraudulently selling avast, I was thinking you might have been tricked.

I now understand that you mean you have had that copy for two years and have updated it during that period.

So the advice remains the same download the latest version and re-register for a new free 14 month registration.

And then register for a free key
You can even use the same home key you've used in the other home computer.
Don't transfer the files, install since from the beginning again  8)

@ Tech
Andy DB can't use the existing key as they don't have the full key due to deletion of the registration email.
