Title: Forum (finally) updated
Post by: kubecj on February 26, 2007, 02:11:32 PM
Forum was updated to latest version 1.1.2
PMs are back, users with less than 30 posts will be forced to go thru captcha while sending PMs. Max. number of PM recipients is 10. Max. number of PMs per hour is 30. That should guarantee that there will not be any PM spam outbreak again.

Registration is now two step, first the captcha, then email activation. That should again stop the robots.

Thank you  :)

May I make a suggestion (not a complaint)?  Being color blind, I have a bit of a problem with the color based icons.  The icon for Normal Topics looks identical to the Topics I've Post In.

Will there be an option for image based icons again?

Can you try to go to your profile, look & layout, Current Theme, change, and try to select either Babylon or Classic?

The classic theme has the SMF logo rather than an avast! logo.

I miss my Old theme, but the Babylon is close to its header layout which is what I liked, but a nice theme all the same.

I'm not sure I like the thumbnail views of attached images, no problem for those viewing them infrequently. But, a real pain for those helping having to open it for reference and each time you revisit that topic in the process of helping that user the image is in thumbnail format, again if need be you have to open it again. I guess we will have to see how it works out in the long term.

I didn't notice the forum 'Policy' button on the row of buttons, I like that being there as there is no excuse for not knowing the forum policy.

The Babylon theme also has the SMF logo.

Why are the email addresses shown despite my forum profile having 'Hide email address from public?' The email icon and address is still in the profile information of the post.

This is something I don't want, my email harvested or being spammed ?

Is this a problem with the Babylon theme as I notice a few others who I don't believe displayed it previously, like OrangeCrate above my posts..

Edit: I have been back into my profile and although the option was checked, I unchecked it and rechecked it, entered my password and changed the settings. This removed the email icon, but why was it necessary to do this when my original profile set-up and that shown in the new update showed the 'Hide email address from public?' option was checked.

Edit2: Cancel my last its bl**dy back again, what is going on ?

David, I saw it, and unchecked the box in my profile too.

OrangeCrate does not have the 'hide' ticked. You have it ticked. Only members see the emails if unticked.

kubecj, I unticked the email (see my response to David above), did you just restore it?
I don't want my email to be seen by either the public, or the members.

Ticked means 'hide'.
Unticked 'show'.

OK then why is the email icon displayed and address displayed in my browser status bar when you hover over the icon ?

Edit: I see now that OC has checked the option his email icon has gone mine is still there ?

Calm down. Both of you should tick 'hide' now and then both write each other if you see the other's mail  8)

Maybe the behaviour changed between the versions, that you see your own email address even if you have it ticked as hidden.

I'm sitting here looking at the email envelope in the post above yours (and in this post). Do you see the envelope?

Calm down, it isn't your email address hanging in the breeze.

I have always had the Hide option ticked and previously it has always hidden the icon.

I can't see OC's email icon, are you saying I can see my email icon and no one else. Why would I want to see my 'own' email icon and address what purpose would that serve, it never worked that way before ?

Can you see your own email icon ?

Heh, guys, I see all the emails, hidden or not, that's why I can't test it for you  ;D

If you don't see OrangeCrate's mail, then everything is okay...  ;)

Under this "normal" account I can't see your e-mail address in your posts nor in your forum profiles, but I can see mine, so I think it is OK.
Title: Re: Forum (finally) updated

Hardly OK when I have ticked Hide.

As I said, "Why would I want to see my 'own' email icon and address what purpose would that serve" the only thing that I see is it serves to confuse, when you have chosen an option to Hide your email and there it is in your face.

I don't know how the information is put on the page or if it is retained in a variable, but if I can see it and it is displayed in my status bar that information is technically available to harvesters.

I simply can't see the purpose to display your 'own' email why go to that effort to display something that clearly isn't wanted by selecting Hide email address ???
Title: Re: Forum (finally) updated
Post by: kubecj on February 26, 2007, 04:11:22 PM
Then I don't know what you want.

Test user chocholo does not see your mail. Is it wrong? I don't think so.

It does not matter if you see it or not (I can't do anything with that, the code is beyond my control). What matters is if somebody else can see it.

Guests (harvesters) see nothing.
Other users see your profile, but not your email.

What's the problem?  ::)

^ O.K.,

Bob just PMed me and said that he sees nothing in the profile, though I see my email address. Others in this thread say they don't see the mail icon in my posts, so I guess I'll let it go...

Pretty strange behavior for forum software though - but hey, if I ever want/need to email myself, at least I know what my address is.  ;)

Title: Re: Forum (finally) updated
Post by: DavidR on February 26, 2007, 04:36:30 PM
My only concern is one of confusion, having selected an option to supposedly 'hide' your email address there is it right in your face.

When I found the email icon in the displayed information, I went looking in the profile settings to see if somehow the new forum update had screwed up my settings. So when I saw the Hide option still ticked I was confused as to what was going on. So I feel I will not be the only one that was confused by this, new members who choose to hide their email only to see it in their face, what are they going to think ?

As you said, the code is outside your control, so what I want is also outside your control, if someone chooses to hide their email address 'don't display an icon in the profile information in forum posts'

To the users of the forum (to me certainly), posts look to all intents displayed on a public place and who wants to send themselves an email ???

Everything was backed up, but since it was directly unusable, somebody has to do the hard work of re-customizing everything (ask me why I don't like to upgrade this beast  ::))

Thanks CharleyO, it has been confirmed you can only see your own email icon if you tick Hide, what the purpose of that is, is beyond me though.

I'm sure we won't have heard the last of it with new members questioning why their email icon is displayed when they ticked to hide it from the public

Right, and it won't be just new members. The problem should be tweaked out if possible. Many people, including some "Evangelists", don't take the time to actually read threads before they post, so it'll be a constant topic of conversation for a while as people check in to the forums...

Just noticed another new feature, I wondered what this little icon was, see image.

I first checked the location and its name (modify_inline.gif) made me curious and it is an in-line modify for your post, instead of the old modify effectively taking you out of the topic for the post modification. Click the icon to modify your post and it remains in-line and opens the post there in the posts position in the topic. I think this will be very useful.

Very handy, of course you don't get all the smilies and other Tags, but for the most part when modifying you don't need that, if you do just use the normal Modify button.
