Withdrawn as it was the latest Sun Java update that caused the problem.

Which update? Java or avast?
Do you have more info about the crash? Error message?
We need more info to help you...

It turned out that Avast was blameless. Sun Java asked me to update it but did not require a reboot. I downloaded Avast update next and crashed. It wasn't Avast that caused it - it was Sun Java. I double checked the Java update and it did the same. 'Last Good Configuration' worked.

I use both latest avast and Java without problem... maybe some other software is interfering with them...
