version: 4.7.986 installed today and after 2 or 3 hours of running I got an error saying Avast couldn't auto update and On'Access Protection stopped working at the same time and will not restart. When I click the a icon I get the RPC error. I tried the link to the FAQ for this error and tried all the things it said to try and no help. I'm running XP SP2 and its up to date. I have uninstalled Avast twice and no help with same error. I have used Avast for years and never had a problem before.
One note I did notice the date on my computer was off by one day. It was set to 21 April vice the 22rd when Avast was updated to the new version. I updated to the new version using the pop up window telling me a new version was available.
I have tried the Avast removal tool no help. Repairing Avast no help and I have just removed and reinstalled it for the third time with no help. As stated above I used the Avast removal tool and used a Reg Vac after the uninstall to clean the reg. Still have the error. The DCOM tool didn't help.
Really could use some help here, Thanks in advance.

Hi BUFF, and welcome to the avast forums.
So, if you head to Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services, what is the current status of the "Avast! Antivirus" service? Is it started? If not, can it be started? If not, what error message are you getting?
Thanks
Vlk
-
Hiya
I can say one thing...you're not the only one with that error, Buff :-\
And for Vlk...the "Avast! Antivirus"-service is 'started' for me. It's running, but the taskbar-icon got the red circle with a red line right through it (with white background) on it.
Help would be gladly appreciated.
-
So, in the Task Manager's Processes tab, you actually see "ashServ.exe"? (provided you check the "Show processes from all users" box at the bottom of the dialog).
Thanks
Vlk
-
I do see it..and using 22,960kb of ram. (incase you'd ask)
I have to go now, tho..be back in an hour or so to check on solutions, if you guys can come up with something.
-
It would be interesting to find out what happens if you restart the service. Does that make any difference (with respect to the (a) ball icon)?
Thanks
Vlk
-
Hey again.
Restarting the service 'removed' the red icon-thingy on the ball-icon at the taskbar. On-Access protection is running, but i still get update-errors.
It say under Summary:
"Information about current update:
Last encountered error: The package is broken.
Total time: 20 s
- Program: Already up to date
(current version 4.7.986)
- Vps: Already up to date
(current version 000735-1)
Server: download108.avast.com ..."
-
Restarting the service 'removed' the red icon-thingy on the ball-icon at the taskbar. On-Access protection is running, but i still get update-errors.
But after you boot, will the error happen again?
Does this occur only with automatic updates or also with manual ones?
Does this happen at any time or just after boot/logon?
Which firewall do you use?
-
1. Haven't done a reboot since I got it to work, tho.
2. It seems I only get the error on auto-updates..but nothing happens when trying a manual one..on either "iAVS" or program updates.
3. Not sure.
4. Windows XP's firewall...
-
Although, when I did the manual update, Windows' Security-messege tells me "avast! antivirus 4.7.986 [VPS 000000-0]" may be too old. Not completly sure what that means.
-
Check your system date, especially the month and year, adjust as required.
Though the VPS of 000000-0 is not valid.
avast! VPS Update - Manual Download (http://www.avast.com/eng/update_avast_4_vps.html)
-
After 3 reboots, I finally got the comp to start everything up properly..sort of. There's no red thing on the (a) ball icon, but according to WinXP's security center, it tells me the same msg. When I right-click on the ball-icon and chooses "About Avast!.." and presses the + icon beside "VPS file (virus database), it say "Cannot obtain imformation: VPS file was destroyed." :-\
An auto-update was completed after last boot-up, too..saying:
"- Vps: Updated
(previous version: 000735-1, updated version: 000735-2)"
Note: Correct date and time on the computer-clock :)
-
000735-2 is the latest VPS version right now. Seems ok now.
-

It's not running. It is set to Auto. When I try to start it I get error 1068. .
-
Tried to update manually with that download, said it was already up to date, but still saying it's 'destroyed' at the "About avast"-screen.
-
In dependencies it says that avast! Standard Shield Support and Remote Procedure Call is required. I checked RPC and it is running but Avast Antivirus is not and will not start still with error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start
-
Any help?

Please try doing a repair of avast installation.
Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs -> avast! Antivirus -> Change/Remove -> Repair (scroll the list on the left down to see this option).
Thanks

Hello again. It's been working fine for a day or two now..up till today, when the Windows' security centre tells me the VPS is too old..again. Have done a update (at the Program settings)and now the VPS-file version is 000736-0, yet the sec-centre still say it's too old. ???
-
Did the security alert give a VPS of 000000-0 as it did before ?
-
Yes, it does.
-
And when I take another look in About Avast, it say the VPS file was destroyed..again. I do the same update like last time, it's back to 000736-0..like seconds later, it'd gone again..like, wth?
-
Can you upload the file <avast>\data\400.vps to our ftp site for verification?
http://support.avast.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=18
Thanks
Vlk
-
yet the sec-centre still say it's too old. ???
Sorry to bother... but check, again, the system time and date... please.
-
Sure, if i knew how (at Vlk)
Time and date are correct. (at Tech)
-
As in, I don't where I make an login-account on the ftp-site :-\
-
That's why I posted the URL - the page contains instructions on how to do it. :)
-
Ah, stupid me *slaps self*....file uploaded
-
Got the file, thanks.
So, with THIS file, the About box tells you "VPS file was destroyed"?
Thanks
Vlk
-
Would say so.
-
Please try doing a repair of avast installation.
Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs -> avast! Antivirus -> Change/Remove -> Repair (scroll the list on the left down to see this option).
Thanks
Vlk
Didn't work. I've tried it and also uninstalling and reinstalling 4 times now.

Generally, Spyware Doctor users MUST disable the Spyware Doctor's on-access scanner (called "OnGuard") prior to installing/repairing avast. There's a nasty bug in the current version of SD that prevents the process from completing successfully.
DarkLimpan, your problem seems to be of different nature. It seems that the new VPS integrity checks implemented in the latest avast builds somehow don't work in your case. I'd be really keen to find out where the problem is... I'll try to get someone look into this.
Thanks
Vlk

DarkLipman, could you please download this tiny program: http://public.avast.com/~vlk/checkvps.exe, place it to the avast folder, then run cmd.exe (the command-line console), cd to the avast folder and run it from there? (with no parameters, just run it)
It should produce some stats about the VPS file, normally, it would look like this:
Check Avast Virus Definition File version 4

Downloaded the file and tried to run it at the "DOS-prompt" (as I'd call it).. Typed "C:\Program\Alwil Software\Avast4\checkvps.exe", the result looks like this:
"Check Avast Virus Definition File version 4
Copyright (blabla)
===================
Not enough command line parameters
Use CheckVps <version 4 filename>"
Did I do all that correct, or did I miss something? :)
-
It needs a path to the VPS file as an argument, i.e. if you are in avast! installation folder, it would be
checkvps.exe Data\400.vps
Or, the full commandline:
C:\Program\Alwil Software\Avast4\checkvps.exe "C:\Program\Alwil Software\Avast4\Data\400.vps"
-
Ok, i can get two diffrent results with that command..one when the file is working, and another when it's been detroyed..the second says: "Stage 01 failed - decompression"..can upload a screenshot of the first results if you wish.. :)
-
Please upload both of them.
Any special way to "make the file work", or it just works sometimes after reboot, and doesn't work other times?
Thanks!
-
Huh, "two different results" sounds really strange. They should be consistent... :-)
I've added slightly more info to the program's output - please redownload it and use the new version. Then post back what it says.
Thanks
Vlk
-
Igor: It seems to be random, and not only on reboot, but like anytime after a successful update :S and uploading the more complicated result for ya.
Vlk: When CheckVps fails, it say:
"DSA_FileVerify FAILED!
Starge 01 failed - decomplession"
Sorry for responding slow, btw :-\
-
Extraordinary indeed!
Hmm... would it be possible to get remote desktop access to your machine?
E.g. using www.logmein.com
-
If so, that'd be tomorrow (friday) after I get home from work (around 16:30 CET)...
-
the person dissapeared
-
Not dissapeared...just gotten busybusy with work and such :-/ but I do still have the same issue.
-
But I do still have the same issue.
So, follow Vlk's advice 8)
-
Well, hey again. Pardon my busy:ness, ect.
Vlk, can you help out on the 16th? :-\ And if you won't help cuz of the fact that this is a 'pirate-copy', I don't care...if I had the money, I'd buy something else.. :-\
-
And if you won't help cuz of the fact that this is a 'pirate-copy', I don't care...if I had the money, I'd buy something else.. :-\
Do you mean your avast copy is pirated and you want help at the official avast forum? Am I reading correctly your post ???
-
If correct a crazy admission, though the errors may well related to a pirated copy failing the integrity checks.

If you can't afford the program use the 'free' Home version.
-
Yes, you read correct.
I'm ashamed to say that I'm not currently rich enough to spend money on any antivirus-program, sadly..
To DavidR: This current version I'm using hasn't given me any wierd errors since I first installed it, up til now. And, sure..I could try the Home version, not that it'll fix the problems for certain.
-
Yes, you read correct.
I'm ashamed to say that I'm not currently rich enough to spend money on any antivirus-program, sadly.
Not an excuse... you can use the free Home version.
-
Tried to install Home, but got some odd error again. >:( So, now I'm installing some other AV-program (that is free)..hopefully one day I can go BUY a fullversion of a good prog, cuz I can't now. I'm living on existance-minimum, if you know what that is.. (excuse or no excuse, it's the damn truth)
-
Tried to install Home, but got some odd error again.
1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
2. Boot.
3. Use Avast Uninstall (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html) for complete uninstallation.
4. Boot.
5. Install again the last avast version.
6. Boot.
