Title: VPN nerfs speed when connected. Who is throttling me?!
Post by: manxe on June 08, 2021, 02:05:46 AM
By Avast app tests, speed is 70Mbps when connected naked, and .55Mbps when using the VPN in the Avast app. Similar results from other apps. I am connected to Optimal, which is Dallas. I have an Acer CB5-571 running Chrome OS 9.0, that runs on Android. Who is nerfing me?? My ISP is T-Mobile 5G at a tower 0.5 clicks away. Apps tell me that signal is not changing. Could it be that TMobile is blocking or throttling VPN? This happens intermittently, usually in the morning around 0800 or evening 1900. Or could it be that the Avast subcontractor at your VPN gateway in Dallas is nerfing the VPN traffic at busy times?? Please tell me. I like your products and want to stay with you.

Hi,

The speed test is testing the WiFi speed and not the speed of the cellular data.

Speeds dropping from 70Mbps to 55Mbps (if you meant 55 and not .55) would be considered normal.

No, I really meant '0.55Mbps'. That is 550Kbps. This is a real problem, and your attitude seems to be parochial. POTS speed is not acceptable. It barely runs the connection.

I get this all the time. It seems the tech world is filled with people who want to talk down to you instead of solving real problems. And to do this they 'assume' and disregard the facts presented to them. It has become a constant irritation.

My bona fides are 3 certifications in IT management, an MIS degree and 30+ years experience in IT. But I don't feel it is necessary to present my bona fides to ask a technical question. I expect a straight answer.

"The speed test is testing the WiFi speed and not the speed of the cellular data." is nonsense. Any speed test should test the download time/speed from the speedtest server across the Internet to your PC. My statements have been verified by 3 separate highly rated and professionally written Android apps. I test thoroughly and do not jump to conclusions before I write. I am a professional.

Thank you for the clarification.
Please view my reply as offering you help.
 0.55Mbps would not be typical.
The speed test I am referring to is the feature within Avast Mobile Security. Hence I included the link to it.
Since you mentioned that this is an intermittent issue, I would suggest that when the problem occurs, try a different server (same location and a different location).
This should give an idea of whether the issue is with Avast VPN or somewhere else. If with Avast, we can look further into it.
