Title: have an issue with latest update 1001 (the first in a long time)
Post by: martosurf on May 01, 2007, 05:39:45 AM
After updating to .1001 version I have this strange issue:

avast! itself runs okay but if I do a manual update of the virus database or the program itself the traditional window shows up telling I have the latest of both but after that I have a window asking me for reboot  :'(

I tried several times and is allways the same: if I do a manual update avast! ask me to reboot.

Do this happen to any1 else?

Tnx!

(by the way, I have all other security soft disable as I do with every avast! update so I'm near 99% sure it's no here the problem's root)

Can you try deleting the file <avast>\setup\reboot.txt and see if it resolves the problem?
If it does not, please post ~100 lines from the END of the file <avast>\setup\setup.log

Thanks

I wish all these recent 'updates' would stop  ;D. I suppose they are all corrections of the initial (14th?) April update that turned out to be flawed in part? Whatever happened to the Beta procedure? :P

Partly corrections, partly bringing new features. E.g. the last one adds an Armadillo unpacker (an important addition)

Cheers

You know, I was wondering when we would hear the regular carping message from greenhatch.  I'm glad I was not disappointed.   The trouble of accepting all these free updates while contributing nothing in return must be so tiring.  I shall have to remember to reset my calendar for the next helpful whine from this source.

Moderators: punish me as you will ... I know this a not a helpful post ... but that particular poster's useless whining on every update deserves far worse than this.

I have to agree with Tech, what is the point of a program that doesn't have development, especially a security based application. I would get very angry if a developer failed to take notice of people experiencing a problem with a bug and they didn't fix it.

Alwil seems to be the exception to the rule where they are actively taking part in the support forums and promptly resolving any problem promptly.

¡¡ UPDATE !!

After uninstalling avast! and deleting manually the folder/files left behind -why you do this?! do you suffer from Symantec complex?!- I downloaded the cleanup utility and run it to make sure any trace of the AV was remove -specially from registry.

Then I installed a fresh new copy of the .1001 build and now it works like it's supposed to work: great  ;)

Just a note: I just needed to completely delete the previous installation with the avast! cleaner because if not the new fresh installation pops-up a dialog explaining that a reboot is scheduled and asking if wanted to reboot now... and suppose you indeed reboot, when you tried to install next time it will just ask to reboot again... and again... and again... and again  ::)

Hope this help, best regards

I completely agree with you on this and this is just the very best reason I recommend avast! to everybody: Alwil's avast! team is not only a lot capable of making an industry compliant antivirus, they are also very community focused bringing additions to it's software based on community feedback, and that really haven't a price - for everything else is Mastercard lol

And of course, if you add to what I say above an excellent coded program, regular virus database updates, regular kernel upgrades, excellent support forum, well... what more could one ask?

avast does 'normally' clear its folders and clean up after itself. However, the problem you were experiencing may well have been a corrupt install/update, this could also had an effect on the uninstall and that is the reason for the uninstall utility. You could have just run that without 'manually' clearing the folders and files.

For this to have happened to you once in 'how long you have had avast' to be classified as Symantec complex is I feel unwarranted.

Yeah, sure, I was joking anyway  ;D  I uninstalled avast! in other ocassions and there allways was a clean uninstall.
And for what you say about corrupted installation, it may be well happened after updating to the latest .1001 build.
But, as I said before every glitchs were corrected after installing a fresh copy of the latest build.

I take everybody's points made, including alanrf (isn't free speech a wonderful thing?). I have now noted from the revision history page the changes that have been made. I had a 'bad experience' when on automatic program updating last year , at which time I decided to switch to manual in future (waiting a few days after each update is released to allow for bugs to be reported and dealt with).
Time for dinner  :P

martosurf, it's a bit shame that you already reinstalled the program - I would have asked you to do some additional experiments... never mind, maybe someone else will report the same problem and we can do it on their machine.

Thanks

Can you please check the registry value PendingFileRenameOperations in the key HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\SessionManager?
What does it contain?

Thanks

Did you disable creating of short file names (8+3) by some tool?

Download this registry fix and run it to enable short file names again:
http://public.avast.com/~forejt/Enable8dot3Name.reg

Then start program update and restart afterwards.

I've setted long time ago 'don't create short names' and avast! allways worked excellent, may be you change something in lastest build? I remember Norton's solutions suffer from this.

Yes, editing the registry, but a long time ago (almost 3 years). So, why this tweak is giving problem just now ?

Maybe a new avast installation procedure... only the programmers would be able to say something.

Still experiencing weird "Need to reboot" issues randomly, for example right after log on (sometimes), after trying to update while connection to internet is disabled, after doing a manual check for updates, etc...  :'(

Did you try the registry fix?
Can you post the contents of your setup log files as asked above to another user?

I will not apply the 'fix' by this time because it's a serious drawback to OS efficiency.

This is a part of the setup.log (found in the setup directory), the whole log weights 242k:

Negative. In reality, it has zero impact on performance. Absolutely zero. ;)

You don't have to post the logs, we understand what the problem is - but unfortunately (for you), the issue is not serious enough to roll out a new version (fixing this). As I said above, the registry setting gives no performance gain at all and disabling it is a viable solution.

Dear vlk,

first of all, please to meet you :) . We've been chating in this thread for a while but we didn't introduce ourselves. I already met some cool people here but is the first time I chat directly with an avast! developer  (I already readed a lot of your posts :))

I'm sorry but not angry to hear what you say, I know every product have it's own cycle developers have to stick with, and while it -'the product'- may be changed or transformed in any way it must stick to company policies, times and funds; this applies to cars, shoes, electronics, food, etc. etc. and of course to this great application avast! too, so I can understand you will not address this issue in the near future.

With what I cannot agree with you is that I have to turn off a feature that improves OS efficiency because a code glitch - yours glitch. And sorry to be contrary to you but 8.3 file names system vs. new NTFS file system is indeed slower, as it is the Last Time Stamp feature - but I have to leave it on to get the best of the hard disk defragmenter.

To my thinking, turning off a useful feature to solve a glitch is not the best way to go. Suppose your car starts to make lot of noice at 80km/h so then you go at a lower speed to not hear that noice while your car can go easily up to 220km/h.

Anyway, overall you have a good product and I congratulate you and the whole team for your excellent work, you really had achived a lot of excellence with this program.

I only would like to ask you if you can post which is the problem, at least in general lines. You know, I'm a lot of curious -with lot of things- and software application are not the exception!!

Best regards,
Martín

Just a suggestion!
Disable the tweak, install the update (with the tweak, many files are not correctly update) and reboot. After that, enable the tweak.
I've tested this procedure and it works ok, but for somehow i have to agree with Vlk. This tweak has no impact. In fact, many tweaks suggested over the net, doesn't increase the performance as it should be. You can check some myths here http://mywebpages.comcast.net/SupportCD/XPMyths.html

Hi moses
This tweak has no impact.  <--- really? You are killin' my hero, I'll take note about that  :'(
mywebpages.comcast.net/SupportCD/XPMyths.html  <----- I already know that site it's pretty good.
For this very moment, since last post I haven't any incident... sorta I'm starting to feel at home again   :)
If things turn bad I will start troobleshoting. Tnx for your hand!

martosurf,

you know many of us fairly well as friends by now.   We will not ask you to harm your system.  I have "last accessed" turned off - by the way it does not hurt my defragmentation program (Diskeeper) or my backup imaging program (Acronis).  If the avast folks asked me to turn it on again - at least for a while - to see if would overcome a problem I have experienced then I certainly trust the avast team enough to go along.

In your own best interests and to help the community may I not ask you to re-think your decision?

Regards,

Alan

I believe Vlk didn't say it won't be fixed at all - just that the impact is very low, and a (temporary, if you insist) fix is very easy, so we won't release a new version requiring tens of millions of people around the world to restart their computers again.
When the next version is released, in a few months probably, I believe the setup will support even this case.

And regarding this "great" SFN generation feature - it's not really that useful as you might think, it's most likely just a placebo. Also, it can bring up problems not easy to solve. The problem is that the system doesn't make it possible to use a long file name at some specific places - and if the short file name doesn't exist, what can you do? For example, I remember there was a problem with the boot-time scanner when it was placed in the avast! installation folder. The system doesn't make it possible to start an executable (at the boot-time) if the pathname contains a space; the normal solution would be to convert it to short pathname, but if you have this great optimization enabled, it's simply not possible. So, you can't start the boot-time scanner.
In the end, we moved the boot-time scanner executable into the system32 folder (where it can be started without the path, just using the filename), but it's not a very nice solution. First, the executables are not where they are supposed to be (you installed avast! into a specific folder, so why should it put a number of its files into the system folder?), second - various problems with access rights may occur... etc.

All that because some time ago, somebody wrote that disabling short filename generation might improve system performance... ridiculous.

Just a small point ... and it has been reported in the forums too.

I will never (myself) complain about avast putting out program point updates to fix problems but I have had calls from the avast users I personally support who are confused about the frequency of recent program updates.  Given the IT background of these folks I have to assume that less experienced avast users must be wondering what is happening.

I know that the avast team must face that fine line of when there is a need to introduce a new release but for this particular tweak ... I'm on the side of letting things calm down for a few weeks.

I have been running Avast on my x64 XP Pro machine for several years without problem, this is the first. I don't remember ever having used the "short name conversion tweak", but am having reboot problems since the last program update.
Below is part of the last two setup log entries, it seems as if it is calling for a reboot for no reason and there is nothing in the reboot.log. :

men, you are great

thank you for all your time, energy and effort; because I'm allways learning I will take care about your post. Already get back to 8.3 to follow your directions.

I just want to note this sentence:

The problem is that the system doesn't make it possible to use a long file name at some specific places - and if the short file name doesn't exist, what can you do?  <-- excellent!!!! - It's very funny the world most used OS has this -incredible stupid?- flaws!

Igor, thanks a lot for your post, you are very kind. Must be very mind-challenging not deal only with your own application code, but with Micro$oft's one too  ;D ;D ;D ;)
