Title: Slow opening of file on share
Post by: JanDS on May 02, 2007, 08:59:09 AM
We have a problem with the opening of a file from a network share.
When avast server edition is installed on the fileserver, the opening of the same file takes 3 minutes and without avast 4 seconds.
During the opening of the file de CPU load on the server is +/- 35%.

Only completly deinstall avast seem te remove the high load.
I have tried to stop the scanning of that particular file extension, stopping avast services etc, but that doesn't seem to help.

If the file is stored localy on the pc (where avast netclient is installed) doesn't slow load the file, only when loaded from the network share.

Is there a solution for the problem other than removing avast on the server ?

How do you access the file on the server? Isn't it a database file? E.g. MS Access database?
Are there any Win9x/ME clients connected to this file server?

Thanks

the file stored on the server is not a database file.
It's some kind of binary file.

All Clients are Windows XP SP2

All that I know that the program is installed localy on the PC and opens a file on the fileserver.

I was able to reproduce the problem on a testserver.
Enable OpLocks workarround you suggeste indeed seems to solve the problem. (Still need to test it on the production server).

But if whe enable this on a server, isn't there a problem of datacorruption when for example also an access database is stored on the server ?

No, everything should work fine IF you don't plan to use any Win9x clients. The reason we disable oplocks is that for some reason, if it is enabled, old Win9x clients tend to sometimes hang when accessing the server... :-\
