Title: Avast update
Post by: Eric33 on May 04, 2007, 06:31:52 PM
Hello,
Since I have connected my PC to the Internet across a router, i can't use the automatic and manual Avast update.
Is it becessary to open a special port on the router to have autpmatic update ?

Thank you for your help

Eric

I am behind a router and I support some other avast users also behind routers.  None of us has had to make special provision in the router for avast updates.

Are you also using a firewall on your system?

No i have no firewall: I consider the router protection is enough from outside attack.
Thank you for your help.

The update is not processed at a particular port, but does your router block the access to any ports and you need to manually set any application to connect, living the port opened?
I think this is dangerous to do without a firewall in the background...

Any malware that manages to get past your defences will have free reign to connect to the internet to either download more of the same, pass your personal data (sensitive or otherwise, user names, passwords, keylogger retrieved data, etc.) or open a backdoor to your computer, so outbound protection is essential.

My router block all outbound connections : i need to redirect any port i want to be accessed from the outside to my local ip adress.

Concerning the error message, after several connection attempts, a red window appear upon the tray bar to indicate the update can't be made. Here are the last lines of my log file :

I wonder how you are able to post here if your router blocks all outbound access.

How does your browser get access to the outside world?

You can download servers.def from here: http://download1.avast.com/iavs4x/servers.def
Save it to C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\setup folder
Start the update again.

Which is your avast version? 4.7.1001?

Perhaps you have answered your own question if your router blocks all outbound connections, it needs to allow avast.setup outbound TCP port 80 access.

Tech,

the log shows very clearly that his servers.def.vpu file had no problem - notice it said it already tried 125 servers.  If avast fails to get any of the servers in the def file (as it did on this log) then it always tries to get the file again and, in these circumstances, always fails.

Sorry for the mistake : of course my router does not block the outbound connections. Only connection to a port from the outside are blocked if I don't redirect the accessed port to my local IP address.

My version is 4.7.1001

I have downloaded the servers list file but nothing change.

It was what Alanrf expected...
I won't give a shot in the dark again or he will blame against me... I do not have another tentative...

Well, I will give a shot in the dark.  I'm not sure it will make a difference but please try.

I notice that in your avast settings you have modified the proxy settings.  I assume you have a permanent connection to the Internet ... is that correct?

If so then please go to to the avast program settings (right click the avast icon > Program Settings)

Select: Update (Connections)

Make sure to check the "My computer is permanently ..." box and in the Proxy select Auto detect > OK > OK

Please let us know if that make any difference.

Before installing your router were you using a firewall?

Also ... while I do not understand the explanation .... please take a look at this post:

In the Proxy select Auto detect > OK > OK
If the user is not using a proxy, I'll suggest, on contrary, to set "No proxy" option and not the Automatic detection. At least, for a test.

Tech,

The log he posted showed that was the setting he already had - that did not work - that's why I suggested the change.

Yes Alanrf, I was using zone alarm but I do not start it since i have installed the router.

In fact my router is integrated in my DSL modem (it is the French "freebox v5") : I don't know how to consult its time and date settings not if it is possible to change it. owever the time is displayed on it and it is correct.

Thanks a lot for your help.

If the user does not use a proxy and it's set as 'No proxy'... why would the 'Detect' mode work?

Couldn't be ZA blocking the connection even not started..., by driver mode or something like that? Just guessing but can you connect other sites with ZA disabled?

ZA is not started at all (not only "disabled"). I have no connection problems to other site. Other software update are OK (fro example Ad-Aware updating connection is OK).

Sorry, I need the log files...
Can you check and post the last 100-150 lines of the log?

I very much doubt that the log files will show anything significantly different from the log already posted earlier, but an extra check is always good.

I do agree with Tech that the issue of ZA still being in your system is worth following up.  I understand that you are not starting ZA at system startup, but that does not mean that some components of ZA are being loaded into your system and may be affecting the avast update process.

I would recommend that it would be worth completely uninstalling ZA and seeing if that does allow avast to perform its update successfully.

You were right : I de-install completely ZA and Avast update works fine !

Thank you very much to you both Alanrf and Tech. You are so kind to help me, tying to understand my very poor english :)

Thank you
Eric
