I have Avast 4.7.1001 Home Edition running on Vista Home Premium. I can update iAVS & Program manually, but my automatic updates are not working. The Warning.log file shows:
5/9/2007 10:39:25 AM 1178725165 SYSTEM 1756 Function setifaceUpdatePackages() has failed. Return code is 0x00000426, dwRes is 000003E6.
5/9/2007 10:39:25 AM 1178725165 SYSTEM 1756 An error has occured while attempting to update. Please check the logs.
Can anyone help me out?

If you search the board for 0x00000426 will you find anything that help you?
-
Tried that with no results. Also tried searching for 000003E6 to no avail.

Interesting; can you try a repair of avast installation?
(Control Panel -> Programs and Features -> avast! Antivirus -> Change/Remove -> scroll the list and select Repair).
Thanks

If the problem persists after trying to repair, as Vlk said, please, post the last 100-150 files of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log

I've been away for a bit (hospital) and am now ready to try some of the suggestions.
My current info is:
avast! Build: May2007 (4.7.1001)
VPS Compilation date: 5/7/2007
I just did a REPAIR as Vlk suggested. I'll just have to wait for an auto-update to occur to see if that helped. If not, I'll post those lines of the log.
BTW, I have also had somewhat similar problems updating the Windows Defender files and using McAfee auto update (which I had prior to using Avast)

You could try this:
McAfee has an uninstall tool that you could run to ensure any possible remnants are removed.

The REPAIR did NOT work. This morning when I fired up the computer, I got the Update Error box again. I have attached the part of the setup.log from 5/14/2007, when I did the REPAIR. I couldn't post it because of size limits.
DavidR, I did run the McAfee Cleanup Tool after I deleted McAfee.

I just checked the WARNING.LOG. and found a new entry today.
5/15/2007 7:52:51 AM 1179233571 SYSTEM 1668 AAVM - scanning warning: x_AavmCheckFileDirectEx [UNI]: C:\Windows\assembly\GAC_MSIL\LOG.Foundation\2.0.2536.35576__90ba9c70f846762e\LOG.Foundation.DLL (C:\Windows\assembly\GAC_MSIL\LOG.Foundation\2.0.2536.35576__90ba9c70f846762e\LOG.Foundation.DLL) returning error, 00000005.
I also got a warning through Windows Security Center about outdated AV files. The "Update Now" button in Windows Security Center DID work (manual again) and my "VPS Compilation date" now shows 5/15/2007.

Well the windows error 5 = "Access is denied" which for its location is probably file protection.

Sjd, by your log, I suggest installing from the scratch. You have problems with security access to the avast folder C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\*.*
1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
2. Boot.
3. Use Avast Uninstall (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html) for complete uninstallation.
4. Boot.
5. Install again.
6. Boot.

Tech,
You have problems with security access to the avast folder C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\*.*
Just wondering ... what in the log brought you to this conclusion?
sjd,
may we see the end of the log ... just after you have experienced an error?

Just wondering ... what in the log brought you to this conclusion?
The user must be logged for me to download the log again and check what was my previous mind...
Or something else is blocking me to download the log (I've tried Firefox and IE).

It is working for me, if you press the mouse wheel (or middle button), it should try to open in a new tab (my setting in firefox), but for me firefox pops-up the Open With or Save to Disk dialogue window.

OK, so I:
1. uninstalled via the Control Panel
2. restarted
3. ran the Avast Uninstaller
4. restarted
5. then downloaded and installed Avast via the CNet link on Avast.com
On restart, I once again received the update error box, and an outdated VPS file warning.
ABOUT shows:
Build: 4.7.942
VPS date: 1/15/2007
I am attaching both my setup.log and warning.log

But, look, you should install the 4.7.1001 version and not an old one...
-
OK, I'll try to do a manual update to get the latest. I can't help it that the Avast.com site leads me to an outdated download site. ;)
Steve

This is getting frustrating. I can't even do a manual update now.

No Steve, install the new one from the scratch, following the steps I've posted before.
Install the new version in a *new* (not existing before) folder.
-
Sorry, to ask again Steve ...
You showed us the setup log for when you installed the updated to avast ... after that you got an update error and for that you showed us only the warning log.
I do not think we have any interest in the setup log for the installation of 4.7.1001 (unless it has a problem).
If you get another automatic VPS failure and error popup then please show us the end of the setup log after that problem occurs.

Tech,
I compared the avast repair log posted by Steve with an avast repair log in my system. The lines that caused you to suspect access problems to the avast program files appear exactly the same in my repair log. I think they are just part of the repair efforts by avast and do not indicate any problem in Steve's system.

Again we have lack of Alwil support: update and reboot problems with 4.7.1001 :'(

Here's where I'm at now.
When I couldn't even do a manual update, I did some further checking and found out that my Windows Defender had not successfully updated for some time again. Back when I had that happen before, Microsoft had suggested that I go into MSCONFIG, disable all NON-Microsoft services, and disable all startup items. Then I was able to successfully update Windows Defender. I then went back and enabled everything that I had disabled.
I decided to try this again, only this time I ONLY disabled all the NON-Microsoft services and left the startup items alone. Once more, was able to update my Windows Defender. While I was at it, I tried doing a manual update on Avast, but nothing seemed to happen. I went back to MSCONFIG and enabled the Avast items I found and was then able to do a manual update of both the iAVS and program.
This morning when I turned on the computer, I had my fingers crossed. I was amazed/surprised when the box popped up a a voice told me that my "virus database has been updated"!!
That leaves me with 5 services still disabled, with one of those possibly causing all the problems?? The services still in question are:
1. Ati External Event Utility
2. Google Updater Service
3. iolo DMV Service
4. Symantec Core LC - I did have this one disabled before and had the problems, so it's probably not this one.
5. XAudioService
Unless anyone has some ideas, I will slowly enable these services one by one and see when the problems recur. Then I'll have to try to figure out if there are updates available for the offending files.
Does this sound like a reasonable plan?? Thanks for your help so far.

It's appearing that "iolo DMV Service" is the culprit. I enabled the other four services and the Avast updates went smoothly. Once I enabled the "iolo DMV Service" the update problems returned, and when I disable it, the problems go away. I'm just wondering if that is the cause of my problems with Windows Defender and McAfee. Time will tell. Thanks all.

I did a search for "iolo DMV Service" and most of the hits that came referred to it being a cause of problems. I do not think that we have heard of that product being related to avast automatic update problems before. Something for us to keep in mind.
