After the latest Avast update I get an error message in Outlook: "The server you are connected to is using a security certificate that cannot be verified. A certificate chain processed, but terminated in a root certificate which is not trusted by the trust provider."
The certificate is issued by Avast Web/Mail Shield Untrusted Root
How should I solve this problem?
-
I'm getting something similar with Thunderbird. It looks as if new certificates have been added somewhere which are judged invalid.
In Thunderbird there is an override but it is not working consistently with Gmail (pop).
It is unfortunate that this problem has appeared. I wonder if it is the same bug that was reported during beta testing.
Be that as it may, is there a work round please?
Free Version 21.5.2470 running on Window 10 20H2
-
I believe this is the bug I reported during beta testing :(
If your mail client have "exceptions" feature, go ahead with it, otherwise you have to turn mail shield off temporarily.
-
New to the Forum. Came here because I'm getting the same msg in Thunderbird and Windows Live Mail. I was able to override in Thunderbird. In Windows Live Mail, I just hit the button to proceed Yes
Just want to make sure that it's a bug w/the new upgrade and based on the comments, it appears that it is. How do we report to Avast?
Thanks!
P.S. Also added other mail clients to the subject in case others are searching; Hope that's ok.
-
Hi guys, we were integrating certificate processing code between MailShield and WebShield and this must have somehow slipped through the checks. We have seen this in the BETA and fixed it - well, at least that's what we thought!
The team is working on it while I type .... we'll update you here soon.

-
Guys, we already have a fix for you. Testing it now if it covers all the cases!
-
I have been getting this notice with each mail account (3 accounts) I use with Thunderbird for the last several weeks.
I have to 'confirm exception' for each account every time I open (execute) Thunderbird. The exception is never saved.
Once I confirm exception then I can retrieve mail.
Nothing happens when 'Get Certificate' is chosen.
-
I have the same issue with Thunderbird. Confirm exception does not work. If I turn off mail shield I can get mail, BUT, then my 'pre-mail' program, Mailwasher will not receive mail. Mailwasher works with mail shield on.
-
I have the same problem since an update I think yesterday 6-16-2021, all was fine before that with mail shield on.
All mail into and out of Thunderbird is blocked with mail shield on.
I found a post about adding a certificate but it was above my head. Can I hope this is being addressed?
Can Avast be rolled back?
I'm on 21.5.2470 (build 21.5.6354.561)

hi,
future update or emergency update already released?
As far as I'm concerned the problem is still present (Thunderbird , W7 64)
-
Sounds like it's still being tested and hasn't been released yet. Is that correct?

OK here now too but a reboot is essential.
A word of thanks to the Avast team for sorting this.

I still have Version: 21.5.2470 (build 21.5.6354.561) It did not update and I still have the same problem. What is the process for rebooting? Just restarting my computer?
-
Restart is a reboot, Shutdown then Startup is not a full reboot.
-
rocksteady: Ok! Thanks, it worked--Build 675 loaded and working! Thanks for the refresher on rebooting/restarting ;)
-
Other folks have indicated that an update to version 215.2470 (build 215.6354.561 is available.
One that fixes the Outlook/Thunderbird mail problem. When I go to update screen, it does not prompt for
a new update. When I click on 'check for updates' IT STILL SHOWS 215.2470 (build 215.6354.561) as being
the latest version. The one that supposedly works is 215.2470 (build 215.6354.675)

Have you 'Rebooted'?
-
Not getting the option to download Build 21.5.6354.675 via the Update section, either. Rebooted my PC several times and Build 21.5.6354.561 is still the latest build available.

Have you tried a manual program update (from the tray icon) ?
I just did that and got the latest build with the fix.

Tried via the System Tray icon, same thing. Build 21.5.6354.561 is still the latest version available. Even re-downloaded the offline installer, and did a re-install. Build 21.5.6354.561 is the version that's installed.
-
Well the (manual program update) worked for me, however as I said I started of from avast free 2.4.xxxx.xxx, so I'm surprised it didn't for you.
Others are also reporting they have got 21.5.2470 (build 21.5.6354.675).
Have you done a system restart yet (required for program updates), though I would have expected avast to ask for one.
-
I have build 21.5.6354.675 installed and no more popup error message "The server you are connected to is using a security certificate that cannot be verified. A certificate chain processed, but terminated in a root certificate which is not trusted by the trust provider."
The Avast Add-in is listed as activated but Avast buttons are missing in my Outlook 2010, how to get Avast tools bar back ?

The same thing is happening to me...
-
I found a solution for me... just run online installer, reboot and build is 675
-
Some reports indicate a "Repair" will fix the issue (i.e. applying patch).
Open Avast -> Menu -> Settings -> General -> Troubleshooting -> Repair App
After a repair, reboot is recommended.
-
The new Version 21.5.2470- Build 21.5.6354.675 isn't shown after triggering a manual update.
You have to reboot your machine.

Emergency update kicked in today. Now on Build 21.5.6354.675, and can check my e-mail in Thunderbird without having to disable the Mail Shield.
-
Thanks guys 'n gals, it's working again!
-
Thank you for the email fix!
-
Thanks, guys a lot for confirming the fix. Sorry for the complications with the update process. It gets delivered automatically, but to be applied to a running service the restart is needed.
In Windows 8 and later, Microsoft has introduced a hybrid shutdown, called: Fast startup. It works but logging out the user and then hibernate the machine. Next time all the kernel and services are restored from the saved memory image (the hibernate file) and the user logs in again - essentially restarting all the user-mode apps. This is why "Restart" and "Shutdown and power on again" are not the same. Similar issues can be seen with Windows Updates as well. See here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/troubleshoot/windows-client/deployment/updates-not-install-with-fast-startup (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/troubleshoot/windows-client/deployment/updates-not-install-with-fast-startup)
Thanks again,
Lukas.

Thank you for reporting this.
hardwax909, could you send us a screenshot of the error you're getting?
Scott316, can you try importing Avast Mail Shield certificate to Postbox?
-The export from Avast is described here: https://support.avast.com/en-ww/article/Troubleshoot-invalid-email-certificate/
-You can then import the certificate in Postbox > Options > Advanced > Certificates > View Certificates > Authorities > Import...
-
I tried the insert image button and it didnt let me choose a file. How to I upload an image to this forum ?

Hi, see screenshot.
-
Here you go, this is for Outlook
-
Ok, I tried that cert. thing. It seems to have helped for now. But seriously, this never used to be an issue. This should be fixed!
-
I'm somewhat offended this is happening (in Thunderbird). You install Avast and then out of the blue you can't send emails.
No explanation from the program. You're just left to worry what's happening.
Then you turn off the mail shield and you can send mail. But doesn't that defeat the purpose?
Avast needs to ensure that this event in the mail program triggers something in Avast that explains what's happening and HOW TO FIX IT.
The app is also detecting Goodsync as having malware and not only that - CONTINUALLY!
Why does it keep alerting me to stuff it should have already DEALT WITH? I added it as an exception already.
I'm getting close to dumping this app.

I was recommended to refer to this thread as for many months I have experienced these Internet security warnings when opening Outlook 2019 in Parallels.
Thanks Avast for causing me countless hours of frustration and taking up valuable time of Microsoft, 3rd Party email provider and Parallels.
I am now looking for a suitable replacement for an anti-virus solution.

Well you could have posted in the topic many months ago and your frustration may have been alleviated.
Not even sure if the version of Avast your using is the Avast Mac Security given your mention of Parallels, should you have been checking that sub-forum.
