I certainly was. It did fool some people. Me being one of those.
I still remember the statement that Windows 10 will be the last version of Windows you'll ever need.

Now that W11 is official, is the forum topic "Windows 11 - Everything you need and want to know" in the works? ;D or would we just be appending to this? ???

I've modified the title so it should take care of everything related to Windows 11.

Does it really matter if we now install Windows 11 and then start endless updates on that OS or,
if the new OS is just another update to the current Windows 10?
Not that it really matters, Windows 11 is official just no place where you can get it currently.

Actually it doesn't matter for me, as apparently neither one of my laptops (both running W10) are compatible.

Hm, my latest machine might go well with Win 11, barely, but others are clearly not compatible :(

Mine won't qualify for the upgrade because of legacy BIOS and no TPM chip. I can purchase a TPM chip that will plug into the motherboard, but there's not much I can do about the BIOS without replacing parts. I just added a new SSD that Windows 10 is installed on, new power supply, 2 new case fans, a new CPU heatsink and fan, and new thermal paste for the processor and graphics card. It's nine years old and runs great. I am not giving up on this computer for Windows 11. Hopefully, Microsoft will relax the hardware related security requirements when 11 is released.
The good news is Windows 10 is supported until October 14, 2025.

I had one system where TPM was not turned on.
If you have the chip and need to turn TPM, open a RUN command (Windows key and R)
and type the following:

I just pulled the laptop out of the closet and ran PC Health Check. It found incompatibility because I don't have Secure Boot enabled because legacy BIOS is enabled. I haven't been able to get into the BIOS on this laptop and change it back to UEFI for a couple years now. Last year, I took it apart, cut component connections, resoldered connections and still could not get it to reset. I turn it on today and after entering 2 passwords, the BIOS screen pops up. Why couldn't this have happened 2 years ago? I changed the BIOS to UEFI and restarted the computer which would not boot. I reinstalled Windows 10 and it now boots up. Then I ran PC Health Check again which now shows me that my processor is incompatible. This has got to be one of the clumsiest tools I have used.

Neither of them match the requirements.
On my pc, I don't have secure boot or the TPM module.
My laptop doesn't have TPM and the processor is incompatible.

Whilst my CPU is meant to support it, I'm in no rush, if it isn't supported, I will just stick with windows 10 until I eventually replace this laptop and I had already started investigation.
I kept XP Pro for many years after support ended because of the programs I had installed programs that simply wouldn't have worked on win10 and I had no intention of purchasing a slew of programs just to get win10.
For me this is little less of a problem and there is some way to go yet before support for win10 is withdrawn, yes it might be nice, but it certainly isn't what I would consider an immediate necessity.
Next step for me is to run the WindowsPCHealthCheckSetup.msi check.

Windows 10 support Will still happen till 2025.
I have one system that's ready to run 2011 once it's released.
That system is set up to receive the new version early since I'm a Windows Insider.
So far, no updates.

I have done some reading and some reports regular program updates to qualifying system not until the later part of 2021.
Which is fine for me as after downloading and running the windows 11 compatibility it is reporting my CPU isn't compatible. So it looks like my plan to wait until I eventually replace this laptop is my only option anyway.

Thanks for that whilst the WhyNotWin11 tool indicates my CPU Compatibility has an ! exclamation mark, but all other checks are OK, including the one about the TMP version being TMP 2 detected (which to me would seem to be the main criteria/requirement, but seems not) and secure boot being enabled.

For me it's already running without problems on one system.
I also had no problems with either Vista or Windows 8.
Neither Vista or Win 8 lasted very long before they got replaced.
-
Didn't say its going to be problematic, just saying it may not be that good. Time will tell.
Many had no problems with Vista or 8, but they were universally condemned as garbage for the most part.
They got replaced because they were inferior.

Interpretation.
"It may be" is similar to "assuming". Neither in my book make much sense.
Not being popular doesn't make a product garbage.

How to bypass the Windows 11 TPM 2.0 requirement
https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/microsoft/how-to-bypass-the-windows-11-tpm-20-requirement/
This pretty much confirms some videos and checks I have made that M 'bloody S' have made arbitrary decisions not based on the system such as unless you have an intel cpu of version 8 you're stuffed (forcing you to make such hacks). Many intel chips pre version 8 (such as my i5 7200u) had TMP integrated into the chip. So the M 'bloody' S check isn't checking at all but following an arbitrary list.
I all honesty, forcing it to be recognised is just bloody hassle I can do without, just to get win11.
Considering my win10 laptop is 4 years old and will continue to get win10 updates for some time, I will avoid the hassle and wait until I replace this system.

That's the strategy I decided on, as soon as I realized W11 was not mainline OS upgrade requiring elements not existent on my very up to date lap top.
Unless MS revamps the W11 requirements I'm happy with my W10 version :)
-
Happy or not, we don't have much of a choice.
-
Happy or not, we don't have much of a choice.
Of course we have a choice, many would probably go for win11, but what is effectively deception, saying their system isn't compatible when:
A: Arbitrary decisions not based on the system such as unless you have an intel cpu of version 8, it isn't compatible, when many pre version CPUs with the TMP functionality built in.
B: If it is possible for people to make registry changes and be able to get win11.
C: If people stick with win10, as you mentioned "Windows 10 support Will still happen till 2025."
How to bypass the TPM requirement in Windows 11
If you are attempting to install Windows 11 and receive a message stating, "This PC can't run Windows 11," it is likely that you do not have a TPM 2.0 installed or enabled.
The good news is that Microsoft includes a new 'LabConfig' registry key that allows you to configure settings to bypass the TPM 2.0, the 4GB memory, and Secure Boot requirements.
Based on the name of this registry key, it is likely used by Microsoft or OEMs to set up a "lab" environment to test the Windows 11 on older equipment or when testing new features.
That said, there are several choices:
1. install it if compatible.
2. hack your system to get it, if technically proficient.
3. stick with win10 until 2025.
4. wait for your next system update, if you can afford it.
But in all honesty this really isn't really a choice but a fact of life, depending on your personal circumstances.
-
I see folks treating not being able to install Windows 11 like it's the end of the world.
Windows 10 works very well and will be fully supported until 2025.
If you have a system that you can update to 2011, do so and get used to the next operating system
which will come with future computer purchases.
There are also still millions of users that are still using Windows 7. To me that's a bit foolish but, it's their security and choice.
-
That's the problem, I have a system that should be able to update to win11, but because of MS's arbitrary decision that all intel cpus earlier than version 8 aren't I get the CPU isn't compatible Image in Reply #21. Yet all checks indicate that the i5 7200U has TPM (fTPM) is built into the CPU.
So I just don't know if MS is only checking the CPU type and anything lower than version 8 is a non-starter, regardless.
###
Opening a cmd window and running the command, tmp.msc returns the TMP status on my system, see attached image.
Now I don't know if the Status: 'The TMP is ready for use' means it is ready, but you have to say to use/enable it. But that means diddly squat to MS as it has said the CPU isn't compatible.

Perseverance does pay off. TPM isn't always called TPM.
Different manufacturers have different names for this Trusted chip.
On my Dell it was called PTT

IMO this is a major cluster f+++
I purchased the HP compaq 8510 Pro (shown in my profile)brand new in 2001 with xp pro factory installed. This laptop has now had (skipping vista) Win 7- Win8- Win 8.5 and now Win 10 20H2 and doing my work for me excellently
Now my point, The 5 year old HP Envy with only Win 10 installed apparently isn't compatible for upgrade to Win 11. The only way I'll upgrade to Win 11 is if MS puts it through as a Mainline upgrade without any special hacking work arounds.
Unbelievable ::)

Same effect. I also tried other options to get to that setting with the same result.
As you'll see in the next video, I managed to get to that setting after many tries.
After a reboot, I was again unsuccessful to reach that setting.

Ha, for the number of items you have on the Taskbar it hardly makes much difference.
I like to go minimalist - On my taskbar I currently only have 5 icons, excluding the Windows icon and Search icon.
-
I only have items that I use very frequently pinned to the taskbar.

I only have items that I use very frequently pinned to the taskbar.
Exactly, these are the ones I use very frequently or they wouldn't be their either :)
To get on my Taskbar they would have to be used several times a day.
A long time ago I used a Taskbar style app/program that had the Icons on the Top, like the Mac style but I never installed that in win10. I quite liked that as they were transparent and also hid after a while, moving the mouse to the top brought them back up.

Update 9/1/21: Microsoft's Brandon LeBlanc, Senior Program Manager on the Windows Insider Program Team, clarified that unsupported devices will continue to receive cumulative updates but will no longer receive new Windows 11 builds.
The PCs given an exception will no longer receive any new future Insider Preview builds from the Dev Channel but will still get Cumulative Updates for Windows 11 leading up to GA. As I said, there is a distinction between *new builds* here.

To be hones I am not that enthusiastic about Windows 11. Looks to me that we will see a lot of updates untill we get a stable windows 11. But this is just my opinion.
As a MS insider, I can tell you it's been fairly steady for quite a while.
Using Windows 11 is a choice not a requirement. Windows 10 will still be supported through most of 2025.
It's your choice. The information in here is provided for the benefit of anyone interested in Windows 11.

Simple then, don't upgrade to windows 11, windows 10 is supported until 2025.
But isn't that what you have been saying many times before about updating programs, if you don't want to, then wait and see how it goes.

@bob3160 After I got used to using Win 10 I liked it.
@DavidR From what I've read about Win 11 it's going to be a lot different than Win 10. Maybe after Microsoft releases it and I read about any forum member's who installs it and likes it then I might want it. I'm sure I'll have quite awhile to decide whether or not I want it. I would rather wait until I can buy a new computer that is Windows 11.

Do you have more than one computer? If so, it might be a good idea
to install windows 11 on one computer and leave the other one with windows 10.
That way, if you run into a problem on Windows 11, you can always search for an answer on the Windows 10 computer.

Life and especially computing is all about change, my first computer if you can call it that was an Amstrad PCW (Personal Computer Word processor) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amstrad_PCW. This was basically that a word processor, with two disks (not Hard Disks) on containing the program and the other to store files. I still remember the co called colour screen black with Green text.
My first Windows system was Windows 3.1 and 3.11 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_3.1x
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Microsoft_Windows_versions
My first modern computer would have had Windows 95 to win98, win98 2nd edition, WinXP, Win 7, Windows 10, so I frequently skipped versions, not because of fear of change but I didn't feel that there was anything there that I felt I needed.

In all honesty I can't see this as being the panacea that it is made to look like.
Wasn't win10 and all the previous OSes before that meant to bring security improvements. But it didn't take the malware/exploits too long to catch up. Hell the big point of having UEFI and TPM 2.0 enabled CPUs, may even fall foul to a very recent bootkit exploit that can circumvent these functions/checks.
Windows is a HUGE target for the miscreant malware writers/hackers, etc. Is it better than win10 and previous win OSes, probably, but certainly not the end for malware, but the start of a new game.

installation on systems that don't meet their initial requirements.
The bypass is posted on the Microsoft update website.

I think more optical illusion rather than 3D as such, when viewed through the 2D medium of your flat screen computer.
But very interesting though.

There are always some features that take longer to be released that the initial launch date.
If that's what's holding you back, wait for Windows 12 to be released before updating to windows 11. :)

Reference your comment: (If you're on Windows 10, you might want to check to see how many
empty folders like this are on your system)
There are a shed load of these empty .tmp folders dating from 15/08/2020 to 17/11/2021.
Since they are truly empty I don't know what the overhead might be, especially on an SSD (as I have for my C: drive) on an HDD it might be different as it would surely have a minimum allocation size depending on the HDD formatting.

Hi,
I am using the official build of Windows 11 and not the beta version.
Usually, in Windows 11, after I upgraded, the hidden icons interface that shows when you click the show hidden icons button on the taskbar's corner is round. But now it is only round when I change the theme every restart. Why is this? Does anyone know?

I have been looking at replacing my current (4 years plus) laptop and there are several larger screen (15.6 and 17") variants some of them are reported as HDR screens, some of the WQHD and even some 4K screens would have this specification.
How the hell did MS get to this point and not find the issue with HDR displays.

New in Edge - Web select lets you easily capture text, images or tables and past it into another place like here or a word document, etc.
Right click on the website, select (highlight) what you want to copy and paste it into the receiving place as I did
with this graph. (Short cut keys Ctrl + Shift + X)
Edge seems to keep introducing more useful tools all the time.
I just copied this from a prior post in this thread.

Windows 11 is getting a nifty macOS feature – Quick View
Read more about it here: https://bit.ly/3JDJKhY
I'm still waiting for it to arrive and I'm running the latest preview build of Windows 11.
If this interests you as it did me, what is available right now is an app
from the Windows Play Store called QuickLook

This works on Windows 10 (not 10S) and Windows 11

This computer which never should have updated to windows 11 many month ago
when I was waiting for the Beta release of Windows 10 21H2 is now refusing
to update to the next release of Windows 11 Preview Build 22598.1
It freezes during the updating process and eventually after a cold start returns
to the build listed in the screenshot.
I did not force the upgrade to 11. It's something Microsoft decided to do on it's
own. This computer was receiving preview builds of Windows 10.
I'm hoping someone has an answer why it is now not updating to the next version
before I downgrade this computer back to Windows 10.

My laptop whilst supporting TMP and it is active it isn't able to update (according to MS) to win11. I too though about some of the hacks/workarounds but decided against it. I prefer to wait for my next computer update, safer and as you say nothing wrong with win10 and has plenty of support life remaining.

Why migrating to the cloud?
Because it will serve cost reductions and the ability to create a more seamless data flow,
so outstanding for total surveillance purposes.
'All your data is/belong to us', that is the general idea behind this move,
polonus
-
I trust Microsoft as far as I can throw them, which is zero mm. I'm still on Windows 10 and will be for as long as possible, the thing that may make me move would be the need for a new system. Then if MS is cloud based, is it time to be looking elsewhere.
What are we paying a license fee for ?
Is this a ploy to get people onto Windows 12 or will that too be in the cloud ?
How the hell would people go about system and data backups with MS in the mix ?
If this comes to pass they should be paying us for our data. There are lots of areas I won't/try not to let Microsoft Install, sometimes there is no opt out. This would be even worse if they are in control of installation on their servers.
EDIT: Also see.

Broken Windows 11? Let Windows fix it!
New in the latest Canary Build of Windows 11
"Fix problem using windows update"

Since this is a canary build the function could be removed but it's nice to have.
The tool installs a “repair version” of Windows 11, and then applies default settings
to the operating system and attempts to reboot without touching any of your personal programs or storage.
Not as devastating as a reset or a clean install of Windows 11.

Thank you.
