You are going to need more details before anyone might assist.

e.g. what is the error, what makes you think it is avast related to be in the avast support forums.

Well 18.8 is the last avast version where XP is supported.

Now I don't know which version you have or which avast program.
Avast Free doesn't have a firewall so if you are using 3rd party firewall or even the winXP one, Avast free shouldn't have any interaction with that.

Attach a screenshot of the error might suggest what program/process is throwing up the error.

I used windows firewall pro without issue with Avast Free 18.8, but I had to revert back to 18.5 for issues unrelated to the firewall.

I have stopped using XP Pro a couple of years ago I had display problems and didn't feel inclined to try and find the issue as I didn't feel it time well spent and I had already got a win10 laptop some time earlier and I haven't used XP since.  So I'm no longer familiar with XP, its functionality or Avast 18.x so it is difficult to be of practical help.

@thejbforum. As DavidR mentions, best if you can post a screenshot or give more details of what you are trying to do and what preceeded the Error 500.
I still have Avast Free v18.5 on an XP/Linux dual-boot machine, but hardly ever booted as XP. Also being the Free version, it does not have Avast firewall, but uses the Windows firewall.

Edit: I booted XP with Avast 18.5 Free this afternoon without any issues. I had to wait for virus defs to be updated, which was expected, as last XP boot was many days previous.

Are you using a VPN service ?
If so try temporarily disabling it and see if that helps.

In the meantime I have reported this, so hopefully there will be some input from Avast.
