Title: INTRODUCING: New BETA of avast Home/Pro (4.1.353)
Post by: Vlk on February 23, 2004, 03:40:03 PM
Hi all!

I'm glad to announce the availability of a beta version of the upcoming avast Home/Pro update. Again, this is a very short beta test - we expect the release of these files to take place on Thursday.

We'd appreciate if you could install the beta and report respective bugs asap.

How to install the beta:
1. Download the file http://cat.asw.cz/beta-jap/servers.def and place it to the <avast>\setup folder (overwrite existing)
2. Invoke avast program update

That's it. Re-transition from the beta to the release stream will also be that simple so you don't have to worry you'll be required to reinstall things etc...

Here is the list of most important changes:

- fixed a bug causing bypass of scanning inside selected archives (eg. RAR) by the Standard Shield under WinNT/2000/XP
- fixed deleting of temp files e.g. when moving packed infected files to the Virus Chest (typically in the Internet Mail provider)
- fixed incorrect display of path names containing the ampersand character
- fixed a bug in mail heuristics related to testing of attachment extensions
- fixed a bug that was preventing generation of report files under Windows 95
- ZIP unpacker: added support for a new compression method
- ZIP unpacker: fixed a bug related to decompression of text files
- RAR unpacker: fixed failures on spanned archives
- CAB unpacker: added detection + proper handling of duplicite file names
- MIME unpacker: fixed a problem with files with atypical headers during deletion
- the info popup displayed during the push update doesn't block the mail program anymore
- sending of emails from avast by SMTP now supports authorization
- the mail providers now work with both VPS version and date (not only date as in previous versions)
- text reports now contain version of VPS files used to scan
- the settings of the Antivirus event log are now not reset to default values after every reboot
- boot-time scanner now doesn't create about 50 files with nonsense names in the TEMP folder anymore
- enhanced on-open scanning in the Standard Shield under Windows 9x
- enhanced checks for incompatible AV programs
- the "Common" config page was removed from Log Viewer and Virus Chest settings
- additional work-around for repeated boot-time scans
- added Japanese language version

Of course, please let us know how it goes. Thanks! :)

downloaded and installed.

i noticed the dowload was very slow and proceeded in very small chunks. despite of the slowness the download process used almost 90% of cpu power on my system.

quite an impressive list of fixes and updates.

That's because you were downloading all the increments between version 342 and 353, i.e. you "missed" 10 sub-versions!

Quite a lot of packages had to be downloaded. :)

This version seems to be much faster than last one. At least on my Avast! 4 Pro. Will this be next release version or i'll have to downgrade back to normal release? I kinda like this one :)

What's this ??? This is what I get when I click on that link:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[servers]
count=1

[server0]
url=http://cat.asw.cz/beta-jap
name=Test (internal)
products=av_pro,av_srv,av_ker,av_oem,bart,av_net_cl,av_net_srv,gav,av_pda_palm,netpurum

ASWSignA2A6AC205F9C2CF4618AD6AD9E25450503693EC9B6147ECE677B805CA18AAD00215D03E2B8416124CASWSignA
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I can't download that file  ::)

I can see in your update list, there is still no semi-transparent feature in avast! on-access scanner, under Internet mail provider, Advanced tab - "Show detailed info on performed action"...

Of course, it's just cosmetic bug, but it still counts, right ?

Hey guys what's up? Ever heard about downloading text-based files? :) :)

Like right-clicking the link and choosing Save Target As...? :)

Sure, the copy'n'paste method works too, but it's a bit less comfortable ;) ;)

It's not in the list, but it's in the program (the list only contains the most important changes). To set it, open the file <avast>\data\avast4.ini, and add the following line to the [AAVM] section (if the section does not exist, just create it):

TagOpacity=XX

where XX is the percent number. E.g.

[AAVM]
TagOpacity=70

A reboot may be required for the changes to take effect after this.

I don't think there were any significant speed optimizations done...

Thanks for advices about downloading that file... and...

Sorry, my mistake, I tried to write down "cosmetic change",  instead "cosmetic bug", but I typed in a hurry. Of course, it's not bug, but something that would be nice to change...

Cheers!

OK, transparent feature is working, I just added those lines inside that .ini file...

- I HAVE BIG PROBLEM -

After beta-update, my booting time increased up to 40-50 seconds... crazy!
Unacceptable... I tried to reboot my system 3 times, and same story...

Please, can you solve this one ?

Thanks in advance !

What do you have into Windows events?

What Windows events ? If you mean in my startup... here is screenshot... the cleanest startup I have ever seen !

Sorry Sasha, I mean Administrative Tools > Events (or whatever is the translation in English). You'll see events of System, Aplications, Security and avast!  ;)

We don't know this info - it's not stored anywhere in avast. And it's virtually impossible to find out as lots of viruses are detected by generic methods and some other share common names...

It's been discussed here already.

fyi: works here too (win2k sp4). haven't noticed any differences, so that's probably good. I'll just imagine that it scans thoroughly, but without any viruses it doesn't really catch my eye ;)

Hate to say it, but a problem I had earlier and that seemed to be solved has returned in the Beta version. When leaving the pc unattended for a certain period of time Windows XP tries to go back to the user login screen. At that point Avast is giving a false virus infection again.

There's one more update now...
You can get it by invoking the program update.

It has couple of more bugs fixed, and a new feature: a text tag is added to infected mail subject fields - which makes to easier to use mailbox rules to filter out these messages.

Enjoy.

The release version is now out (labeled 4.1.357), and all beta testers are being transfered back to the release stream automatically. Just invoke manual program update.

Thanks again -- I guess 357 is the best avast build ever!!! ;D
