Title: Happy iPhone Launch Day....
Post by: drhayden1 on June 29, 2007, 02:35:21 PM
Well, the big day is finally here. The day all… errr… some of us have been waiting for. I’m sure some of you are counting down the minutes and seconds until you can go marching into the Apple store to pick-up your very own iPhone. Wait, what am I thinking. If you really want an iPhone, you’re already in line. If you get one, we want stories. Maybe there wasn’t a line? Maybe you were the only lone sole standing outside the store before open? Or maybe it was like a day after Thanksgiving standing outside of Best Buy with a herd of hungry humans.
The day wouldn’t be complete without a dose of iPhone humor.
In case you haven’t heard, here are some of the iPhone’s most highly anticipated features:

    * Nanotechnology enables it to reassemble itself when thrown against wall
    * Exclusive link to Google Street View so you can watch yourself using your iPhone at all times
    * Takes Polaroids
    * When moved from hand to ear, makes Lightsaber sound effects
    * Prominent Apple logo
    * Reproduces through asexual budding
    * Has way, way more PRAM than the last thingy
    * Comes with an iPhone hat, so people know you own an iPhone during the brief periods you’re not using it

Not for those of us in the UK, September or October I think. But this is one end user who won't be getting one, too expensive, two years contract, too many functions I will never use. I already have a phone that does what I want of it, make and receive phone calls.

Some nutters by all accounts have been camping out for four days waiting for this launch.

For that price, I can buy a pretty good computer and make FREE phone calls....  ;D

Now that explains it all Frank.
Not only do you get to spend $600.00 for the iPhone
but, you also get to throw away your iPod since that feature is built in.
I guess if I get one of these, I can even throw away my computer
cause that's also built in.  ;D ;D

Nobody in this forum is ripping off our Brit friends.  I made a friendly come back to FWF as I remember a few posts about you having to pay more.  Your representatives in your government are who you should complain to.

There have been numerous on-line petitions on the downing street (government) web site, all pretty much ignored or the usual comment, we can't get involved in commercial pricing.

iPhone madness: This hot phone now sold through malware

This morning, Sunbelt researchers discovered a new custom Trojan that attempts to steal money by selling a fake iPhone. This Trojan looks custom-built and has very poor coverage by AV vendors (report here).

I'll wait as usual until they cost £60 on pay-as-you-go.

Interesting, my last phone cost me £10, it came with £1 credit, not much I know, but it also had free delivery by courier. So it was virtually free and is a great little phone, when I looked for replacement batteries (not required yet) I couldn't find one that wasn't more expensive than the phone ;D

I can buy a new Virgin Mobile phone for a fraction of the $ it cost for a new battery. ;D  In fact I bought a new VM phone that was free after rebate & got a personal CD player to boot. ;D  I haven't activated it as my current VM phone is working just fine.  Nothing like having a spare in case of loss or breakage.  Oh, I got my current VM phone free after rebates.  Sir Richard Branson is a Brit that gives us Yanks great deals. ;D

DavidR & FWF,

I was only picking a little fun with you.  I hope you weren't offended.  I wouldn't like it if things cost more here than in other countries.  As far as I know Sir Richard Branson still owns Virgin Mobile.  There was some talk that he might sell VM.

At the US Army Post where my Mom worked, she made friends with the wife of a German Army Officer who was here in the USA for training.  Before he returned to Germany he bought a new Mercedes & had it shipped to Germany.  Purchasing it here & shipping back to Germany where it was made was cheaper than buying it in Germany!  I heard on radio programs that Mercedes were cheaper here, I know its true from her German friends.

At the dealer where I bought my Moto Guzzi a Swedish man also bought a Moto Guzzi & had it shipped to Sweden.  It is cheaper to buy an Italian motorcycle in the USA & ship it to Sweden.  I was there, I talked to them.

I saw in the news an Italian tourist visiting the USA bought his Nikon camera in Italy.  When he got here he discovered he could've bought it here at a substantial savings.

I know it won't take the pain away, but Brits aren't the only ones being ripped off.  It isn't our fault.  The USA can't set the prices in Europe.

This little tutorial on how to open up an iphone will come very hand in about 6 months time, when the non-replaceble battery will die and people will have to replace it themselves using spare batteries from eBay a la iPod. You ll then realize how fundamentaly bad the iphone design is, but i guess since its pretty and shiny, you wont care much... (dumbasses)

The battery life by all accounts isn't stunning so you are likely to be recharging regularly if you are using all the functionality itunes, etc. so I doubt you would get close to normal phone battery life. On my previous phones charged once, occasionally twice a week the Ni-Mh battery lasted under three years.

I wonder what the life would be for this with a Lithium-ion battery with a high recharge cycle, they are probably hoping it will be the life of the phone, but I would think it would be greater than 6 months. It is most certainly a design flaw not to be able to replace the battery.

You probably know by now that the iPhone only lasts about 300-400 charges —and that's most likely full charges, not topping it off from 80% to 100% at night—before you have to send it into Apple for a replacement. Apple's just thrown up a page saying it's going to be $79 with $6.95 shipping, which is $85.95 per phone when you send yours in.
gee-think i'll go out and get one now-naw!make it 2 ;D

The battery wires are soldered to the motherboard the battery itself is removeable (but any opening of the phone voids the warranty)

Battery is Li-Ion Polymer just like the current Apple laptop batteries. Expected life of battery is 14-18 months

Battery replacement will be similar to the iPods $70 + shipping if not under warranty (free in under warranty)

There's been the usual hype about the iphone in Australia, but it'll never be sold here (not this model anyway) because it uses "outdated" CDMA whereas all other new internet phones are so-called "3G" which is faster and cheaper.

Get Used To It, hardly a great marketing strategy and not something I would contemplate, much less get used to. In my opinion it is absolutely a design flaw when you have to send your phone away to have the battery replaced, fine for an ipod but not an essential item like a mobile phone with your life on it. Sorry MAC but IMHO this is a design flaw that every 14 months or so you lose the use of your phone and all the other 'wonderful' gadgets, just because the battery needs changed.

I know of no other 'phone' that you have to do this with. So how long is the turn around and what is the user to do in the way of a phone whilst this is going on (have a spare phone and contract) ?

I guess much of the $70 dollars is the labour charge for all this replacement.

I agree it isn't a good strategy but whilst it is a pain in the rear and your wallet, but you could live without your ipod but your phone with all the iphone gizmos the whole point of putting it all on one platform surely is to dispense with the other stuff only to lose it every 14 months.

With their market share in the I guess they hope they can get away with it in the ipod, hell for $70 you can get a very good mp3 player.

Guys its a great strategy, millions and millions of ipods have been sold and 700,000 iphones have already been sold!!!
Besides 90% never replace the battery in the iPod, they buy a new iPod thats how well the $70 fee works they say "For $40 more I can get a new iPod Nano"

Say what you will it is a good strategy for persuading people to buy new units instead of keeping the old model. It works I see it happen every day with the iPod and i suspect the same will happen with the iPhone, if not Im waiting to change out your battery behind the Genius Bar.

That might be a fine strategy for an ipod where for some it is clearly more cost effective to pay an extra $40 and buy an new one, but were talking an extra $515 if you apply the same principal to the iphone and but a new one rather than replace the battery.

So with this kind of price differential I feel they will not want a $600 disposable phone so will want a new battery. There is also the remaining period of the two year locking to AT&T to consider. So now they lose their phone for however long the 'send to replace battery, replace battery, send back to user' cycle takes.

There will always be idiots who have to have the newest of anything on the day it comes out.
It's a good thing most people don't fall into this category.
If you really have to have one of these "Apple cash cows", wait for iPhone 2 I'm sure there will be many improvements.  :)

You should be able to get the battery replaced in less than 10 min at an Apple Retail Store once the Geniuses are trained on how to service the iPhone
