Title: Any comments on the new avast update [4.7.1029]?
Post by: Vlk on July 29, 2007, 12:17:06 PM
Hi all,

according to our logs, the new version has been downloaded by almost 1 million users but still there's no complaints (or even comments) about it at all.
Is it really working that good? - Usually, there's at least a couple of people who have some problems... ;)

Cheers
Vlk

I'm interested about this line from the changelog. Is it possible to explain about the improvements?

(Indeed no problems with this release for me  ;D)

Running smoothly, without problems, as always. It's perfect.
Keep up the good work.

Well, it's a lie. :) Well, the lie is that it is a feature of v4.7.1029. Instead, it is a feature of the latest couple of VPS updates (0760, 0761). There were some important improvements in the script scanning engine, elf (linux executable) scanning engine and a couple of other important changes.

We decided to put it to the program revision history because it was released roughly at the same time as the 1029 build (even though it should work OK even in the previous versions of avast).

So... hopefully, you'll have a chance to see improved performance of the engine.

Cheers

Vlk, i just found a small problem. But not in teh problem but rather on your webpage (Download section for Home Edition). http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

avast! 4 Home - Arabic version (length %setupara_exe_len%)

The file size is not displayed, only variable for the size. Or is file just not uploaded yet?

Vlk, you obviously didn't manage to fix the Outlook 'Message Display Problem' that we uncovered. Just wanted to make sure that was the case and that presumably a fix is scheduled for the next release..??

If I remember Vlk's previous response it went something like, "I have been able to replicate it, but it isn't going to be a simple fix."

Yes I already was confused because I always assumed scanner updates were preformed with the VPS updates. Wouldn't call it a lie, since the improvements are actually made. After all the huge database additions and now also engine updates I'm really looking forward to see how avast preforms :)

Thanks for the explanation Vlk!

Yeah, I know. This need to be fixed by our webmaster (who's not online during weekends :))

No we haven't managed to fix this, as I said, it will need some deeper changes (maybe Igor, when he comes back from the beach, will look into it).
BTW it's not really an Outlook provider issue (at all). Basically, it happens every time there's a disabled check box or radio button in a skinned dialog (together with the XP Silver theme). See e.g. the avast settings dialog, it happens there too (e.g. the Report file page).

Am I missing a trick here? If I have a long path in 'Exclusions', there seems to be no way of seeing that path in full after it's been added...also, is it the same in the Pro version?

Thanks

Just click on it twice like you'd like to rename it and then scroll to the end...

Vlk, i think i found another bug...

Start Simple interface and click "Folders" checkbox.  Marked two options are not browsable even though they are there.

Thanks. However, a simple scroll bar would be nice in windows like this.

Exclusion Question: I'm excluding areas of the hard disk where I keep large files that I don't want to scan: Like DVD files I've produced, ISO images that I've produced and so on. I also have approx 6500 .jpg images that I was going to exclude - is this wise in your (anyone's) view? I understood .jpg's to be infectable file types these days...

Thanks.

This is actually as expected. There have been some changes in the implementation of this "Browse for folder" dialog box. It used to be painfully slow (sometimes), now it's much faster.

Even though not directly related to the new version, I agree on that one. Have no idea why the scrollbar is not there - but it should. We'll have this fixed for the next update (yeah, if nothing goes wrong with 4.7.1029, this means a couple of months wait :-\)

Cheers

I haven't given it a full workout yet, since I just did my weekly housekeeping scans with avast etc. yesterday.  But the resident providers seem to be working just fine, as (almost) always.  Can't even see any changes yet from that perspective, but obviously I haven't even had interface open yet.

That doesn't really explain me anything Vlk. It was slow. Ok... but why are those two non functional? avast! not capable of browsing folders? They are regular browsers just like any other.

Hi Jem,

please start a new thread about this (or any other problem(s) you might have).
This thread wasn't meant to solve specific issues (there's too many readers/writers here and it would soon get bloated).

Thanks
Vlk

Greetings, all!

I am having a major problem with 4.7.1029 Home Edition.  Running on Vista Home Premium 32 bit, when I try to run the main on-demand scanner ashAvast.exe, the splash screen shows and the scan of memory-resident programs completes normally, but when that finishes and the main scanning interface is supposed to appear, it fails to open and the entire avast loading process shuts down.  Vista does not freeze or anything like that; I just can't get to the main avast! scanner interface, and therefore can't do a scan.  For this reason, I have returned to 4.7.1001, which works flawlessly.

For what it's worth, my specs include Intel Core 2 Duo 6400, 2 GB RAM, Asus 8600GT PCIx graphics (with Nvidia Forceware 162.22 WHQL), onboard Realtek ALC883 audio with Realtek driver 1.72 (WHQL), Attansic L1 Gigabit Ethernet with driver 1.0.5600.11159 (WHQL), most recent Intel Chipset drivers (installed using the drivers' setup program), and all Vista critical patches (but none which are only "recommended") offered by Windows Update as of this moment.

Any ideas on what may be wrong here would be much appreciated.

EDITED:  This problem occurs whether I install .1029 on top of .1001 via avast update or I completely uninstall .1001 and install .1029 from scratch.

Regards,
Crashman

I think it would be smart to start looking at Event Viewer. You can solve many mysteries regarding program problems if you look there.
Usually you can find out what caused the crash and why. Mini dumps can be useful to ALWIL guys of course.

RejZoR,

Thanks for the reply.

I just finished reformatting and reinstalling Vista (maybe overkill, but it doesn't really take that long).  .1029 now seems to be working just fine. I guess every once in a while it's worth going to a clean setup to get unwanted gremlins out of the system.  Or maybe Vista is still a bit flaky...

In any case, all is well again with my world (well, at least with the computer ;D)...

Regards,
Crashman
