After a program update several avast processes are changed, you firewall should recognise these changes and challenge for permission to connect, you may in haste or error have denied that access.

What is your firewall ?
Does it allow ashWebSv.exe internet access ?
- If it does delete the entries for them and reconnect to the internet, this will force the firewall to ask permission again.

I would suggest you try a clean reinstall.

Download the latest version of avast http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html (http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html) and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall.

Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html) and save it to your HDD.

Now uninstall, reboot, run the uninstall utility, reboot install the latest version, reboot.

Also from your first post:

Were there any error messages ?

You shouldn't have to stop on-access protection, that removes all protection, try Termination of the Web Shield provider that should allow access.

The problem we have is avast doesn't block it merely scans content, it isn't a firewall, so there would appear to be some conflict and that is usually a firewall blocking ashWebSv.exe, since XPs firewall doesn't have outbound protection I can't see where that conflict comes from.

Please try the following:

1. Open the file <avast>\data\avast4.ini, and add the following line to the [WebScanner] section:
ModifyVistaSocketAutoTuning=0

2. Save the changes, restart the computer and see if it makes any difference.

If that does not help, try:

1. Run CMD prompt (as an administrator).

2. Type:
netsh interface tcp set global autotunninglevel=disabled

3. Terminate and restart WebShield. Do you see any difference?

OK Adding to the avast4.ini  work on this Vista Windows ;)
But on other PC Running Windows XP Has same Problem, Gonna Try second Option to see if That helps on that PC.

Well... it is intended to work only for Vista and not XP as far I know.
There isn't any problem with WebShield and XP. I can login to any site, for instance. Are cookies allowed in these browsers?
