Title: NEW Avast Version 21.7 (August 2021)
Post by: Karel Šťavík on August 25, 2021, 06:21:26 PM
Hi, all. Please welcome the newest version of Avast AV: 21.7 (21.7.2481)

Public announcements

Some more clarification about the new Firewall. Only a smaller portion of users will actually get it enabled in 21.7 release as we still want to observe it and test it a bit more before major fullscale on all userbase (of course, only those users who will actually get it are informed about it through our product on their device). You can expect the full-scale to happen in 5-8 weeks. When it comes to upcoming beta releases, all of those will already have it enabled in full.

Bug fixes and improvements for:

As usual a big thanks goes to the team for yet another successful release!

How to install:

1. Update from your existing Avast version via Settings -> Update -> Update program

2. Or you can download and install files:

Online installers (recommended):

Why is Avast using CEF? I would assume it uses more resources and more importantly seems like it will require security updates each month? Can the updates be pushed by emergency fixes, if not then one has to update avast all the time. :/

I installed it, then uninstalled it.

I receive an error message trying to delete the Avast Software key under Wow6432Node.

I can find no way to remove it. I had the same problem with the previous version.

Please see attached for path and message.

So, even if I install avast! again on my system there is no guarantee I'll even get the firewall. That's a bummer.

Another error when trying to download the offline installation file for Avast Free. I have Firefox to use https connections only, but it is strange that the download location isn't https, yet the link given is https, but this obviously redirects to iavs9x.avg.u.avcdn.net which doesn't appear to support it ?

HTTPS-Only Mode Alert
Secure Connection Not Available
See attached image.

Given the errors reported by others I will hang back once more.

Presumably because of the inclusion of the firewall in avast free, the avast uninstall utility will also have to be updated ?

Avast installation files have become bigger version after version. Most of the extra features are useless because there are variety of other free alternatives. Avast team should consider to remove them from the Avast installer and make those extra features become the standalone products like Avast browser instead of adding them into Avast installation files.

Got the Free version and the firewall still looks like it is locked away behind premium, I got Comodo Firewall installed anyways, so if it does active I'll just disable it, but awesome nonetheless.

Would be nice if advanced users who are interested in trying out new tech like the new Firewall could manually activate it via Geek menu. Instead of hoping for the best that they are drafted into the testing group by random chance...

I have been using Avast Free for many years on this PC with no issues. Today I updated through the Avast UI to this version and Avast crashes immediately upon starting up the UI. I have tried repairing, and a clean uninstall and reinstall. I even restored a previous OS image which had the version from May/June 2021 on it that was still working fine. I tried to uninstall/clean install again on the restored OS with the same result. I am running Win 10 21h1 with all of the latest updates. CPU is i7-4790K on ASUS Maximus Hero VII with 16GB of crucial ram. The error I am getting in the WER report is:
AvastUI.exe   Stopped working   8/26/2021 4:08:43 PM   All Users   0xc0000374   A heap has been corrupted.
      StackHash_aeea   10.0.19041.1110   C:\Program Files\Avast Software\Avast\AvastUI.exe   31,496

I also tried the latest AVG with the same result and am now forced to use another antivirus. Please take a look at this issue. Thanks.

Just as with the AV, Windows deactivates its product when you install a third party FW.

You completely removed connection bars that let control how much access an app has to in, out or only local network... Why?
21.6 had these options, https://imgur.com/a/vBC286q and 21.7 doesnt - is there alternative to them?
Also Application Rules are BARELY working, trying to access them crashes Avast
https://imgur.com/a/Bm6bbwc
This never happened before in 8+ years I paid for your software. This is the most unstable release.

@DavidR. Hippo v Puma again. I remember us having problem finding back versions of v18 some time ago and you posted link to filepuma for that as well. Good to learn old versions are still on there.

I would reccommend users keep previous copies of offline installers as backup, in case of problems with the latest release version.

I hadn't read the full topic when I posted.

However, I just wonder if from the installation of avast free if the paid license is applied or assigned from the avast account, would that convert to the paid version ???

I too would recommend downloading and saving copies of the off-line installation file.

Hello Serjan,
1. network and application rules can be filtered via button More->Filter rules.
2. Avast 21.6 is not possible to officially download.
3. Is it possible to share crash dump (related to application rule)? Dump file should be located here: c:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\log\ . If possible share to petr.blatny@avast.com .
4. Related to missing connection bars -> I'm sending the feedback to the UI/UX and FW team.

Thank you very much for letting us know.

Could you please check your Firewall profile settings? File and Printer sharing is enabled by default on the networks with private profile. On the public profile (some untrusted, free public networks) - incoming File and Printer Sharing is blocked by default for security reasons.
ok, so that's how it is and does avast not have a feature to detect all malicious ports for free because there are some rogue or malicious applications using those ports to connect to hackers or malware networks ?
There are no TCP/UDP ports considered as malicious in general, but there might be old/not updated applications with known security gaps listening on some ports. Firewall itself currently does not have a database of those apps. We try to keep all applications up-to date to mitigate the chance of having old apps with know vulnerabilities by using the feature Software Updater. Regarding port scan detection feature - We offered it in paid versions only, as we think of it as an advanced protection that is not common in products made by our competitors either.

The answer is yes. We plan that Firewall will have special measures for various Apps based on their reputation. It also should be noted that malicious apps are of course detected by our scans and our shields (which are available on the free versions), so you should not be able to download/install them in the first place.

This morning I got an Avast screen of upcoming changes and Avast Free news.

What is it about? Firewall only?
A screenshot would have been nice. :)
I haven't seen that screen.

You're right I didn't think about it.  :)
It opened with the Avast console underneath.

I also had this notification this morning, I never considered taking a screenshot (as I suspected this would be  common occurrence), but it had a Button there 'See what's new' or words to that effect.  Unfortunately, clicking that did nothing else other than open up the UI and Zero information. Even checked the Notifications and nothing there either.
+1
Hello. I would like to inform you that I also received the same notifications, I clicked on more results but nothing came up.

Again, without a picture, there's no way for those of us who didn't see what you're talking about to judge.
Sorry.

At the same time it's an avast announcement (which I haven't seen either) that says there's going to be a logo change .... I don't see what more those who received the email can give. :-[
They don't have a picture to offer .... just to say that the logo representing the avast brand will be changed.
We will see later.

I got the same e-mail but it didn't say anything about logo, just stating something is going to happen. Maybe translation issue.

I just received it as well.
But nothing about a possible logo change (in french).
Maybe translation issue.
Yes, that's right.
In Italian "il brand avast è stato rinnovato" suggests that it's the avast brand that's going to be changed ....when it only says that "you will see something new at Avast".

I like the old one more ... I don't like this very much, it looks a bit like the one in Ad Aware, always with the A and orange background.  :)

Thanks for the screenshot.

I'm not impressed either, I hate these stylised alphabetic characters (if that is meant to be an uppercase A), I can't see how they reflect anything.  Perhaps just a new chapter in the Avast history.

That said when the amoeba/blob icon was first introduced many didn't like that.
Quote from: Extract Wikipedia
An amoeba often called an amoeboid, is a type of cell or unicellular organism which has the ability to alter its shape

How are they planning to animate that logo in the sys tray? Maybe as a full on water jet
