It's strange, for me I just have a single file avast! External Control.exe  ???

After I download and unzip, what do I do with the files.  There are several, but none is executable.

???  ??? Several files? Impossible. ZIP file contains only avast! External Control.exe file as Technical already said.

Ok here's little explenation for functions:
Enable avast! Antivirus Protection
Enables all services and program files required for avast! to work correctly.

Disable avast! Antivirus Protection
It perfectly disables avast! antivirus including all services, program files and also removes trey icons. Useful if you want to test some other antivirus without restart or to totaly disable avast! for any other reason.

Auto-Restart avast! Antivirus Protection
It automatically restarts avast! Antivirus program (restart includes restart of all services, trey icons, mail protection program and update program).

Launch avast! Mail Protection Wizard
This starts the avast! Mail Protection Wizard.
Useful if you deleted shortucts from start menu.

Launch avast! Log Viewer
Similar to Mail Protection Wizard, except this one launches avast! Log Viewer.

Launch avast! Chest (Quarantine)
Quickly view infected/suspicious files stored inside Chest (Quarantine).

Launch avast! Skin Packer
Quickly launch avast! Skin Packer for avast! Antivirus skins.

Perform avast! Brutal Remove
Removes avast! Antivirus in brutal way. This is useful if you cannot uninstall it in normal way through Add/Remove Programs. Everything is fully automatic.

After Auto-Restart option, check Run Time in On-Access panel. If its counting form zero again than it was restarted properly. There is usually no need to restart avast! unless you encounter any problems and you think that fast auto restart might fix them.

For example, fast restart fixes old VPS date in email tags(after VPS Update) and recreates Virus Cleaner DLL file inside TEMP folder.

Sometimes you want to perfectly disable avast! or reload it perfectly without need of restarting the whole machine.
Plus i included many solutions to get avast! online if some nasty virus disables it. Currently there is no command for boot-time scan, but there is a VPS and Program update (even if avast! is not running) and also a very thorough memory scan.

great job rejzor, My program is useless to windows users.

logic-dag is useful for reporting the status of the logic board on Macs G3 or G4 ( iBook laptops have logic board falures it is a huge design flaw so I made this to tell users when their board is in trouble and nearing falure) there is currently no pre G3 support (and there never will be)

G5 support will come soon.

Current version is 0.1.2 if you awn an iBook and would like a copy IM me

No. The program is standalone as it is. Just extract it from archive to whatever you want location and run it. avast! External Control in mainly for advanced users (are you?). Well except Brutal Remove, there is no feature that could harm avast! installation.

hers is why:

+Brutal Remove function replaced with generic uninstall utility from Alwil Software
sonetimes the usual way didnot work and i had to use brutal remove. that feature was great.

Hm so you're saying that avast!'s default uninstall utility didn't work (the one you can download from Download section)? And Brutal Remove did? I can make dual selection for generic uninstall tool and for my own Brutal Remove in case the first one fails to clean avast! AV.

Currently working on version 0.9.135 :)
I'll add previously mentioned removal methods and startup section status for better analysis. I think it'll be much easier to analyse problems with this tool, because you'll be able to read all required info in one place. Very cool for those who don't know how to use regedit and how to find different entries and service status :)

I'm also thinking about fast log dump,so AEC (avast! External Control) can dump all status info into a text file for further submission/analysis or for simple copy&paste text on this forum.

I think i'll finish v1.0 before the end of this week. I'll put AEC through heavy testing today to eliminate all known/unknown bugs. The only bugs that might stay are spelling errors in text, because my primary language isn't english so its not so easy ;)
But i'm doing my best and hoping that all of you might wanna help me ;)

If you want, you can fly over all strings that you can see and check if they are spelled ok :) This would help me very much.

I'll impliment Update Check too,but i don't know if i should make it that AEC checks for update on every startup or as optional AEC Update feature in selection list where all functions are?
For v1.0 i'll impliment only manual update check, but later i'll add time based check (ie every 7 days).

RejZor, is it possible to:

1) Configure the behavior of the windows of your program?
I mean, if you want that the program shut down after the action or not...
     Ask or not for confirmations...

2) Have a parametric command line, each function with a parameter?

It will be very useful as you can imagine  ;)

Sorry, but i cannot impliment function to go back to program after some function is executed. On some function screens you are allowed to go back if you want to change something, but after you have given some action for avast!,this utility will exit.
Its due to somehow limited arhitecture, because its not written in any known programming language, but its a bit improvised ;)

Added a minor startup check&termination for rogue processes.
The termination engine is the same as in Rogue Process Xterminator tool.

You can download version 1.1.050 from my page (make sure you refresh it ;) ) or via integrated update feature.

Can't be. Version 1.1.050 was out today !? I test every release for this update feature and it was working every time. Made some extra fixes in later versions, but nothing big.
Try deleting this folder:
C:\WINDOWS\AECU

This is a temp folder for update process. Maybe something went wrong and the update check file remains there. But its overwritten each time so i don't think this is the problem ???

So is it necessary to have the rouge process tool if we have this version of AEC?

Hm well currently i'm not sure what to do. I could do two seperate tools, but than id have to maintain two update services which is somehow too much work (i don't have any scripted update service). I'll most probably impliment this into AEC as extra feature. Updates will be available through AEC update service.
Also i don't know yet how to mark versions by these processes number or something. Also i'll try to add terminate&clean function, but i don't know how to add specific batch commands in front of each process name in most painless way. Any idea? Word maybe?

Hm developement of this tool will go on along with avast!. Currently there is not much problems since i have a quiet stable code, but i'm more conserned about vesion 4.5. If there will be some big changes,i'll have to re-make lots of things.
On version 1.0 i added comments and re-arranged scripts in the most logical way,so i can change them more easily, but i say lets wait and see. Maybe i wont have to change so many things after all :)

Techie101 is helping me to fix bugs for Win9x,so i hope that platform will work ok as well :)

I'm thinking about implimenting CRC32 file comparison, but i'd like to hear from you if this could be useful in any way.

It will just tell you if the file matches to compared one or not, nothing more, nothing less.

Title: Re:[New version] avast! External Control 1.2
Post by: RejZoR on June 21, 2004, 11:16:00 PM
Version 1.2 is out weeee ;D

New in version 1.2:
+Added ZIP Archive Extractor function
+Added avast! Optimization Wizard (full avast! files defragmentation)
+Added finish dialogs for Enable/Disable/Restart avast! Antivirus Protection
+Fixed avast! installation path detection (if not installed/detected)
+Fixed avast! version and build number detection (if not installed/detected)
+Fixed some spelling errors and minor bugs

Ok ZIP Archive Extractor might be useless to most of you,but i thought it could be useful in critical situations (btw you can extract files from any file as long as it uses ZIP compression technology, because you are not limited to ZIP extensions only :) ) ;)
I also included avast! Optimizer (defragmenter) which fully defragments all avast! files. But only available under Windows NT/2000/XP/2003.

I'm also thinking to make this tool Windows NT only, because Win9x is very limited and i lack test environment (I have NT OS...) for it. Maybe i'll make a second AEC utility only for Win9x users,i'll just have to get that d**n VirtualPC so i could test inside Windows XP :) For now enjoy AEC 1.2 ;D
Title: Re:[New version] avast! External Control 1.2

Title: Re:[New version] avast! External Control 1.2.260
Post by: RejZoR on June 23, 2004, 03:00:00 PM
New in version 1.2.260:
+Added Database Storage Method selection (ODBC or XML)
+Added Norton Antivirus 2004 Cleaner (supports Windows 2000/XP only)

I finaly integrated database changing ability. You can now easily change between ODBC or XML without need of editing any INI files. AEC does this job instead of you! :)
Second one is a long awaiting function that cleans all remaining files and registry entries left behind by Norton Antivirus 2004.
Currently its limited only to Windows 2000/XP and Norton Antivirus 2004 (Pro) but i'm probably going to add support for Windows 98 and Me too :)
I also changed Changelog and Readme file into RTF file format with some colors,so its easier to read the text.

You know, RejZoR, I've been tempted for quite a while to get and try a copy myself.  But you (and of course others here) keep coming up with new ideas for it, and you're putting out revisions faster than avast gets definitions updates.   I don't dare blink, or I'm already three releases out of date.  ;D
Title: Re:[New version] avast! External Control 1.2.260
Post by: RejZoR on June 23, 2004, 04:14:58 PM
Hehe i can do this because i have plenty of time and i also have a rock solid platform to strat from. For example ODBC and XML changer took me 5 minutes to impliment it into AEC. Norton Cleaner took me one day, because i had to install it in virtual environment and manually get all entries and files to delete/clean.

No worries, just check for updates with integrated Smart Auto-Update utility :)

+Enhanced Auto-Restart function
+Added avast! tweaker function
+Added Show tray icon tweak
+Added Use animated tray icon tweak
+Added iAVS update check interval tweak

Here is another nice release :)
Read Readme file for more details.

Use Smart AutoUpdate function since it appears that i have slight domain problems (takes almost a hour to find it).

Ok now proxy can be a problem. I have required settings, but don't know how to realize them yet. How to make settings for proxy permanent after setting them (so you don't have to set them each time you wanna check for updates). Hm...

Well, a lot of programs allow the configuration of a proxy (spybot, spywareblaster, avast itself)... Maybe an INI file? Well, you are the programmer and I don't know about this things. I'm just the user and in this case, more than the programmer, you are the creator, the owner, the boss, the all-in-one  ;D

I manually disabled the proxy filter and receive the update  8) It's not complicated, I can wait for you troubleshoot this  ;)
Title: Re:[New version] avast! External Control 1.5 Coming soon!
Post by: RejZoR on July 19, 2004, 04:12:21 PM
Ok,since version 1.5 is almost finished (i'm still testing most of features) i can reveal some new features that will be available.

New in version 1.5:
+Fixed Auto-Restart function
+Fixed exit after every function command
+Fixed back commands for some functions
+Status page moved inside function menu list
+More detailed avast! Status info
+Status info can now be dumped into log file (on desktop)
+Merged avast! External Update (VPS and program core are now updated together)
+avast! External Control Update is now known as Smart AutoUpdate
+Added proxy settings for Smart AutoUpdate
+Enhanced startup section check for Mail Protection proxy
+Added VRDB generation interval tweak
+Fixed menu loop subroutines
+Fixed some variables
+Fixed text errors

This list might change on final release (probably one or two extra functions hehe) but these are mainly the biggest changes.

I'm also very proud on avast! Status Log dump feature which will simplify troubleshooting since it gathers most important informations about avast! and dump them into simple text file that can be posted her on forums. I'm sure Alwil guys will like this, because they'll just request this log instead of asking for thousand things regarding avast! (versions, path, installed providers and so on).
It also doesn't gather any private informations (you can check this by yourself if you open the log file) so there is no need to worry :)

+Fixed Norton Antivirus 2004 Cleaner (Registry cleaning part)
+avast! External Control Settings renamed to Smart AutoUpdate Proxy Settings

This version brings only few bugfixes. Big thing comes in next version (i guess) and it will be a new tweak to enable On-Access packers scan for Home Edition of avast! Antivirus. Stay tuned :)

Fair enough,  I dropped my computer the other day after a LAN party and everything is okay except for a dent in the top and my harddrive somehow lost (orphaned, disassociated) a crapload of files, sygate and Avast would not work as well as other programs.  After some time I managed to get Avast, sygate the two main culprits removed and the hd patched enough for a semi stable system.  I then reinstalled avast and it wouldn't work. Blue ball, red x stated inactive and wouldnt start.  I removed it again, restarted, reinstalled, restarted, wouldn't work  :P.   Removed it again restarted installed AntiVir, worked, scanned for virus's to make sure.  Uninstalled AntiVir, came to the forum rembered your tool used it to brutally remove avast reinstalled avast, restarted, didn't work  :P uninstalled avast, restarted, brutal remove again, restarted, reinstalled, WORKED ;D  also used the norton remover

Thanks

No worries Technical. AEC is n00b proof and uses only tweaks that are most common/make biggest difference. Not everyone like to edit huge text file with strange entries ;) There is still lots of other tweaks that are not covered by AEC due to its complexity.

Another sweet release :)

New in version 1.5.100:
+Added avast! Main Control
+Removed induvidual Enable/Disable/Auto-Restart functions (merged in avast! Main Control)
+Added edition detection for status page and log dump (Home Edition/Professional Edition)
+Added VPS version detection for status page and log dump

I redesigned Enable/Diable/Auto-Restart functions a bit and added some more status info. I also managed to add basic edition detection capability so now AEC can recognize Home Edition and Professional Edition.

Never i think. I was hoping Le Doc could fill this gap with his Java based tweaker. I'm mainly limited to Win2000/XP.

avast! Main Control is basically a merged version of Enable, Disable and Auto-Restart features that were seperated before. Again only Win2000/XP feature, sorry. Check Readme file for details.

There is still lots of other tweaks that are not covered by AEC due to its complexity.

Well, Le Doc (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2;action=viewprofile;user=rloschmann) was trying to do an extensive tweaker for avast (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=9;action=display;threadid=5847)... Where is he?

Lee, ODBC uses Microsoft drivers and XML not. If you use MS Office, probably you won't have trouble using ODBC as it's included in that package. If not, you can try XML storage. See settings on my signature, search for XML and you'll find more information.  ;)

Bob

A while back i used to always go by "if there is an update/fix, then do it" but also a bit back i used an update from windows update drivers and it stoped my inet connection, and a little bit after that i attempted to update my router and compleatly messed it up, i had to get a new one in the end, so i am going by that useful advice now.

Thanks all for the help

There are some things you better never update, unless there is no other option to fix a problem. Amongst them are bios and firmware.

If there is no problem. Leave them as they are.

Yeah, well in fact everything was ok(thats why i found this bug so late) except the fact that variables to control enabling, disabling and auto-restarting were too long to operate correctly.
I just short them up and now its working. I never thought this could be the limit hehe

My HJT analyzer works perfect when I use the source code, but after compiling it has troubles with lines containing a "," (comma). It sees them as a carriage return. Still looking for a better compiler but sofar no luck. (Looking at powerbasic, but that one is 200 usd)

I don't know who came up with the Avast! External Control & wrote this piece of work, but i'm in the group that admires speed & rapid response by any application or program.

I'm totally amazed at this special technology and the lightning quik reflex i've witnessed so far with this.

Thanks Alwil. Avast! This is by far on of the more clever ideas to grace the security apps stage probably ever!

I must also add, although i have been in the minority in my choice of this Spectacular AV, i and many others like me have not been disappointed and in fact very impressed!

Avast! continues to root out and find potentially threatening files that others simply miss or fail to include into their database period.

No need to make open comparisons, this is been no brainer no matter who or why others may disagree.

I,ve done some serious study into the potential dangers that maliciously released files can do and their elusiveness to detections, and out of them all Avast! is overwhelming the #1 safety product that always comes to the rescue and has proven itself many times over again.

I can't thank the developers more but i will.  :)

The External Control componant is just another exclaimation point to this very modern high technology security program.

I found a little "bug" in the latest version of the AEC.

I've disabled on-access protection by right clicking the blue ball and then "stop on-access protection and exit" When I now run the AEC and choose "status info" it tells me "On-Access Protection: Ready and running"

I've checked and all providers are indeed stopped.
