Title: Why does Avast take so long to load?
Post by: Ramon Sala on September 19, 2021, 11:57:15 PM
Hello,

In general Avast is a good antivirus and I like it, but it takes a long time to load and also to close. Could that be fixed for next versions?

Thanks!

What are you basing this on ?
I don't see any long time to load on my system in my signature below.

What is your System, Operating System, CPU and RAM details  ?

Have you or did you have any security based programs installed on this system  ?

Hi,

My system is Windows 7 64-bit and the only installed antivirus is AVAST. When Windows starts Avast takes more than 30 seconds to appear in the taskbar and during this time the system can be slow (not all 30 seconds, but some time of it). Other antivirus (Panda, Webroot, Bitdefender) do not do that.

So these have been previous installed/tested?

If so have you removed them according to vendors instructions using vendors removal tool?

The icon is also the last thing that gets shown. The protection starts very early on in the boot process.

As Bob mentioned Avast has system drivers and processes that start very early in the boot, the Avast tray icon is to enable you to access the User Interface and not an indication that avast is now running.

As Pondus mentions, previous antivirus solutions should be uninstalled or they could conflict, slowing not only the protection, but could conflict in the protection function.

Thank you all for your answers.
The problem is that until the taskbar icon does not appear (about 15-20 seconds), the system runs slowly the most part of those 15-20 seconds.

It might help if you answered this question, https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=304480.msg1656890#msg1656890

You're welcome.

The system starting is a busy time, system and startup programs running, etc. etc.

Avast being a resident on access scanner (scans files before they are executed/run/modified), it will be scanning this activity to protect your system.  So yes there is going to be a load at that time.  If you are saying that is about 15-20 seconds this isn't what I would call slow (unless you are running a super computer) more like normal for most users and fast for some with low performance systems.

I'm brutal on what programs I allow to run on system start up, absolutely essential programs only, like those I'm going to use immediately after boot and or very frequently used programs.

You don't mention anything about your system so the above is a bit speculative.
My system specs are below my posts, whilst I don't shutdown my laptop frequently, when I do it isn't particularly fast, but certainly not slow.

Thanks again for your time!
My computer has an Intel I7-6700 3.40 GHz CPU (4 cores, 8 threads) 16GB RAM. There are three Windows systems installed, Win7 32-bit, Win7 64-bit, and Win10 64-bit. I usually work with Win7-64 and it is the one with Avast installed.
I tried other antivirus (Webroot, Panda, Bitdefender), but before installing any of them I made a copy of the system, so after uninstalling it I recovered my copy of the system so that there was no trace of the uninstalled antivirus.
Not that those 10-15-20 seconds are very annoying, but other antiviruses don't do it and that is why I asked. Well, no problem, it is clear now and, once again, thanks for all your answers!

No problem glad I could help.

Your system would appear to be powerful enough, certainly compared to my little laptop, which is fine for my usage.

I assume that these OSes are One main default OS and the others virtual OS installations, if booting into a virtual OS I would imaging that these would have a slower boot time.

Hi,

No, all three systems are in three diferent partitions and Windows shows a boot menu where you can choose the system to boot.

Thanks for your patience!
