Title: Ashserv.exe - application error {fixed}
Post by: Nogard on September 14, 2007, 05:48:32 PM
I uninstalled an older version of Avast and installed the new version of Avast and now I get a ashserv.exe application error when I get my windows xp log in screen.

Here's how I uninstalled avast:
1. used add/remove to uninstall it
2. rebooted
3. used avast uninstall tool
4. rebooted
5. removed all the left over folders and files from avast
6. removed left over registry strings from avast.
7. rebooted.

Here's my set up. No Av now, Outpost Firewall Pro ver. 4.0.1024.7809 (700) and proxomitron.  No other security tools running. Any ideas on how to fix this?

I believe this may well be an outpost issue.
What is the full text of the application error that you got ?

I am using Outpost Firewall Pro ver. 4.0.1025.7828 (700) which is a slightly later version. Now when I downloaded the latest version, I exported my configuration and uninstalled the old version before installing the latest OP pro version. During that installation it recognised avast and said that this could be conflicting application and did I want to exclude or avoid conflict (or words to that effect) I answered Yes.

Now in the C:\Program Files\Agnitum\Outpost Firewall (assumes you installed in the default folder) there is a file called wl_hook_data.cfg (this is just a text file), if you have this file add the following line to it:
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashserv.exe

If you don't have the file create it using notepad or any text editor and add the same line C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashserv.exe (assuming you have installed avast in the default location). Save the file in the Outpost Firewall folder, the wl_hook.dll file should be in that folder so you should be able to see your new file is in the correct location.

Install avast, Reboot and hopefully you should be in business.

I have that same  file and the ashserv.exe was already in the file. It was the only thing in there.

The full error is: "Ashserv.exe - application error

here's what it says in my event veiwer.

David, what a mess from Outpost... what's happening?

It is just a compatibility check in much the same way as web shield checks ZA pro, I have no issues with it but I thought about this compatibility check to see if it was there.

From the windows event log entry it looks like a problem with ashserv.exe and not OP pro as it is a memory error as opposed to a clash.

@ Nogard
Did this happen at every boot ?
How much RAM do you have and how many sticks of RAM ?

@ Tech
I wonder if it would be a worthwhile exercise to get ashserv.exe complete a crash dump or f that is possible at this early stage ?
Title: Re: Ashserv.exe - application error
Post by: Nogard on September 14, 2007, 09:36:30 PM
Yes it happens at every boot. I have about 640 RAM.
Title: Re: Ashserv.exe - application error
Post by: DavidR on September 14, 2007, 09:45:02 PM
Well 640MB would indicate two sticks 512 and 128. Mixing RAM shouldn't be a problem but you may have a faulty stick of RAM.

Ideally you should have the 512MB stick in the first slot (slot 0) - you could try switching them over and test or take one out to see if one is causing a problem.

Edit: Something I just thought of, that light bulb moment. If you can get in and open the Program Settings, Troubleshooting, check the 'Delay loading of avast services after other system services' and see if that has any effect.

OK, I'll try that and see if it works. The 512 is in the first slot and the 128 is in the second slot.

Looks like both sticks are working. I get no errors about them not working when I place 1 in at a time. I still get the ashserv.exe application error no matter which stick is in. I also tried to reboot my computer 2 times and get the same error.

Do you get the same message when you run (or restart) the avast service manually? (Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services).

Thanks

Somewhere I've read that you should do the contrary, using the first slot with the smaller stick.

Yes I do.

OK I can try to put the smaller stick in the first slot.

I did it the other way around. The smaller one first but I still get the error.

Please, answer Vlk's question:
Do you get the same message when you run (or restart) the avast service manually? (Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services).

It's difficult to guess where the problem could be... maybe troubleshooting route must include disabling providers (one by one) and see if it works... Isn't anything related into Windows Events or anything more in avast logs?

It's a pity... but I can't guess what's wrong...
Please, post the last 100-150 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log

I uninstalled Avast a few times and reinstalled it. I never put in my Registration yet.

I never used the demo version that long. Before I update to the latest version, I didn't even use the demo when I installed it a 4 weeks ago. I registered it and had no problem. I get message through Avast update that there was a new version out. I tried to update through the updating tool but it wouldn't let me for some reason. So I down loaded a new version, uninstalled the old version, reboot, cleaned up what was left, reboot and re-installed the new version I started to get the error message.

It does not matter if you use (on-demand scanning) but the installation itself is considered as an use (on-access). If you install / uninstall / install again, you will have only 6 days of trial period.
Can you add your Home registration key and see if you can update?

Yeah I can update with the key in, it's asking me to reboot after the update though. I'm going to reboot and see what happens.

Strange... Is there any other security program that could be interfering?
Firewall? HIPS protection?
It could sound stupid, but can't you try an installation from the scratch:

1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
2. Boot.
3. Use Avast Uninstall (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html) for complete uninstallation.
4. Boot.
5. Install again the last version.
6. Boot.
7. Check and post the results.

XPSmoker is a tweaker tool, isn't it?
It won't be bad if you disable Outpost firewall and test... but, for sure, something is blocking low level activity of avast and you're receiving an error. The difficult for us is to guess what is doing that...

I did all that was said to do in the other post you posted. I even went as far as disabling outpost on startup and I still get the error.

Yes XP Smoker is a tweaking tool. But I have nothing else that is running that could mess with it. I don't know what it could be.

I did that, I still get the error message at the log in screen. But after check marking that, I get to keep avast opened but still not resident though. It has a little red circle with a line through it at the bottom left corner.

This is very strange and the first case I have seen on the forums where the usual culprit another AV once removed resolves the issue. For it to also effect other AVs I'm really baffled as to what it could be.

Whilst I have had no issue with outpost pro, that really is the only common denominator other than your OS. Are you using the anti-spyware plug-in in OP Pro, if so I would suggest you disable it and see if that makes any difference.

Before you posted the windows event log entry for this, if you can go to the latest one and see if clicking the for more information, see Help and Support Center at go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp link and see if it does produce more and perhaps more helpful information.

I turned off the anti spyware program for outpost and still have the error. I clicked on the link in the event veiwer and got this:

Nogard,

usually, when a program (or a system service) crashes, a "minidump" file is generated. This file contains detailed information about what actually took place, and can help us analyze the problem. To that end, it would be really useful to get your minidump files corresponding to these crashes.

Unlike in case of "blue screens" (whole system crashes), application-level crashes are not saved (i.e. are deleted as soon as the program terminates). Now, it remains to find out how to capture the dumps we're interested in. Unfortunately, this is not too easy because the procedure depends on your configuration.

What usually works is to run a program called drwtsn32.exe (integral part of Windows). Configure the paths where dump files should be saved (or leave the default locations). Next, simulate the problem (i.e. start the service and let it crash). This should cause a dump file to be generated in the path configured in DrWtsn32. If that's the case, just ZIP the dump and upload it to our ftp server (as described here): http://support.avast.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=18

Once the dump's ready, or you have problems generating it, please get back to us.

Thanks
Vlk

Nogard,

usually, when a program (or a system service) crashes, a "minidump" file is generated.

Thanks
Vlk
Do you want the log file or the user.dmp?

There is - ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming
There are no read/listing rights there, so you won't see anything in that folder (not even the file you upload), but we'll get it. I suggest to rename the ZIP file to a unique name before uploading it (random, or something containing your nick, or something like that).

I'm going to try to re-install Avast again one more time. It don't work, I'm done with it.

I fixed the problem. It was OutPost Firewall that was causing all the problems. Anyone know how to install outpost without having this problem?

Well you didn't say what it is in Outpost that is the problem so I haven't any idea how to bypass the problem. I'm not suffering the same issues with outpost pro 4.0.1025.7828 (700).

I assume by fixed you mean you have uninstalled outpost.

I would suggest downloading the latest version of outpost and with avast already installed then install the latest version.

OH, I just uninstalled Outpost Firewall and and it worked. So I just reinstalled Outpost firewall and it works fine. I'm not sure what was blocking it.

Often there is no apparent reason why but a clean reinstall often sorts out many of these unknown issues.
