I dont think ALWIL considers the Mac version a very high priority. there are no wide spread ITW mac viruses yet. I think that there are only about 20-25 Mac Malware samples in ALWILs library total so obviously thats not as high as a priority as the Windows version which gets more Malware per day than the mac has total

Because the Mac is gaining in popularity  and there will eventually be a need for a Mac AV program. They want to be ready when that time comes. If you try out the beta you will see it is close to release. My guess is they are waiting for Leopard's release to make sure there are no Issues with the new OS

So Leopard is out last few days, I have it installed and it's running like a charm. What's happening with final version of avast! for Mac ? Can we get some official feedback from Alwil team so we don't have to wonder ?

Thanks in advance!

Hallo,
will be listed when the sales officially start - but this doesn't mean that it was unavailable/secret until now - http://public.avast.com/~cimbal/beta.html contains the latest snapshot, and this was available for everyone who wants to _help_ with testing... especially with testing that on the brand new Leopard 10.5.

Unfortunately, many betatesters downloaded the product, but didn't write their report or opinion back. Actually, only one betatester (!) reported a real bug (a race on dual PowerPC machine), and two or three reported a minor problem... :(

I can probably do some testing. I am well known by my testing adventures with Windows versions  ;D

The only problem is I can not do anything until I get home from work.

OS X Leopard, up to date.

Cheers!

Hello,
it's Friday now - so how are the results? :)

[ yes, some minor changes will be necessary for 10.5 - Apple, as it seems, has intentionally  limited the use of ol'good  InputManager-based plugins. but, in general, even the present release-candidate works OK on both PowerPC and x86 machines :) ].

Pavel,

Avast is running fine. But I did find a minor Quirk.

The installer Seemed to freeze Toward the end. I minimized the installer to the dock and found that it was actually waiting for me to choose the options (install mail support, launch at startup etc.) But the window for those options popped up behind the installer so it really did look like it froze.

Any way to make that window be the active window when it comes up?

THis occurred on both PowerPC and Intel

EDIT here is a screenshot from My Intel system showing what i mean

I'm sorry to say I have no clue since I haven't had a chance to install avast! for Mac yet. I am swamped with work last few days, last night I worked till 1 AM (client set some crazy deadlines), and I am back to work again... sorry  :-\

Avast did not automatically add itself to the login items on Leopard (Intel). So I had to manually add it to have avast launch at each bootup.

Thanks for Your info. The "hidden installer setup dialog" problem was already known and is fixed in the latest RC (see the beta-site), the "launch after startup" problem will be fixed in the very next RC.

PC

Avast did not automatically add itself to the login items on Leopard (Intel). So I had to manually add it to have avast launch at each bootup.

Hmmm, this effect isn't Leopard-related only (occurs, for example, on a freshly installed Tiger too *). Unfortunately, this functionality (~ adding to LoginItems by a "third party, non-preferenced" app) isn't officially supported nor recommended by Apple (according to OCS, Apple states "This is not done."). Some applications use a half-dirty trick how to do this (Apple posted this "hint" to some developers who requested this functionality), and we did it basically using the same method. We'll try to workaround this case.

* after addind anything (even temporarily) to LoginItems, the whole mechanism starts to work since this moment. that's why nobody noticed, because avast! isn't usually the very first application that we have installed.
