Title: troubleshooting Vps update problems
Post by: djgeorgia on September 21, 2007, 02:34:36 PM
I've recently downloaded AVG home version 4.7.1043 and virus database update, because at home I'm offline. I've put the licence key as usual. Update process failed with reporting errorcodes:
SI: 0x00000005
ST: 0x00000003
LE: 0x00000000

Can you help me, please?

Regards,
DjG.

You wrote AVG, as highlighted above, but did you mean avast?

Are you using Windows 98?
Error code 5 means access denied (you don't have enough rights to view that folder).

Hi,
I have a update problem too.
avast tries to get http://download74.avast.com/iavs4x/vpsm-77505.vpu, answer from server is Error 404.

Basically, check the log files (or post the last 100 lines of the logs):
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log

Also check:

1) If your subscription allows the update right now (i.e., if it is not expired). Home (free) version need registering each 14 months.
I hope you haven't bought a license from a site on this list: http://www.avast.com/eng/fraudulent-sales-of-avast-products.html

Also, bad jollyroger.vpu file could contain banned registration keys with error and then update fails because of an invalid key. See how to download a new jollyroger.vpu, http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=27185.msg222148#msg222148.

2) If your firewall settings and allow avast.setup to connect.
If you're not sure, just turn off your firewall (to be sure the update failure is not due to it).
Maybe you should 'remove' avast.setup entry, try to update, receiving a new alert from the firewall, allowing it and checking it to remember.

3)  Check your proxy settings into avast!:
Left click the avast icon > Settings
Update (Basic) > Details > Proxy
Make sure your browser is not set to "Work Offline" (this option is generally in the File menu).
If it doesn't help, try switching from "Auto-detect" to "No proxy" (I'm assuming you're not connecting to the Internet via proxy).
You can run proxycfg -d in a DOS window to make your computer connect direct, without proxy. You can run proxycfg -h for help.

4) Also you can try changing update service's login account, follow this:
Open services control panel (e.g. Start->Run, and type: services.msc
Double-click on avast! iAVS4 Control Service to show properties. Switch to LogOn page.
Enter administrator account name and password.
Do the same for avast! Antivirus service.
    Then start update again.

5) The last option, check if the servers.def file is corrupt or 0KB (C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\servers.def).
You can try and download the servers.def file, http://files.avast.com/iavs4x/servers.def and replace the one in the avast setup folder.

The problem is as follows.
I can download manually jollyroger.vpu but when i update the version og 16.09.2007 is downloaded which says version 77505 is the latest
from the log:
22.09.2007 19:47:26 internet: while trying to get file 'vpsm-77505.vpu', error 0x20000006 has occured, try 40
22.09.2007 19:47:26 package:  DldPackage: C:\\Programme\\Alwil Software\\Avast4\\Setup\\vpsm-77505.vpu, returned 0x20000006
22.09.2007 19:47:35 package:  Error MakeVps LoadDiffPackage: C:\\Programme\\Alwil Software\\Avast4\\Setup\\vpsm-77505.vpu
22.09.2007 19:47:35 general:  progress end - 0
22.09.2007 19:47:35 general:  progress thread end
22.09.2007 19:47:35 general:  Err:Other HTTP error (404), while trying 67.15.38.62:80//iavs4x/vpsm-77505.vpu

I have also attached the part of setup.log concerning my last attempt.

checked servers.def: seems ok and is identical to file downloaded manually.

a friend of mine had the same problem, and he solve it by uninstalling and installing Avast.

Thank to you all who're trying to help me.
I'm currently using windows xp.

I've also tried to use old good way for solving software problems - uninstall/install. Unfortunatelly, it hasn't worked this time  :-\.

And what about the other steps I've posted before?

Sorry it (still) simple doesn't work.

1. Licence key is not problem
2. jollyroger has been replaced. The answer is the same as it was before.
3. I've removed existing firewall in first days and first steps of solving problem.
4. About proxy settings: as I said, I don’t use any Internet connection at home. I’ve tried with automatic and manual update in settings, any of them works.
5. About update service's login account: on LogOn page there is no account and there is a password which can not be removed by ‘delete’. There’s no password for administrator’s account on my computer and there’s no another accounts beside administrator.

Finally, I've reinstalled avast again and put a new licence key. The answer is - the same. Only couple of times, I've got an answer that update can not be realized because it is used by another program ("try it latter, please").

I have no idea what to do.

Why not? Are you using the Home, the Trial or the Professional version?
How many times did you installed avast? Trial periods are 60 days (1st installation), 6 days after that.

Please, post more about the log, not only the 'last lines', but 200 lines of the log:
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log
