Title: Avast icon disappears
Post by: Luzette on September 24, 2007, 06:51:18 AM
The blue ball icons have disappeared from my system tray. How do I get them back there?
I am using Windows XP, and the icons is not hidden. But I have a new small icon showing Avast mail scan and an email address.
My Avast is Home edition and is running regular.
Thank you all for kind reply

Navigate to C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4. In the right hand panel locate ashdisp.exe. Right click this file and select create shortcut. right click the nwly created short cut and select send to, and select desktop. this will give you a shortcut on the desktop. Douoble click it and the icons should apear. This is only a temperary work around until the cause is found. Each time you reboot you will have to double click the shortcut.

About the mail icon. Is it present at all times? Do you recognize the email address?

If this is the icon, see image, then avast is scanning email.

If you aren't checking for email or sending email then you would appear to have an undetected trojan spambot.
If you haven't already got this software (freeware), download, install, update and run it, preferably in safe mode.
1.  If using winXP AVG anti-spyware (formerly Ewido) (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/) Resident scanner during trial On-Demand after trial ends. Or SUPERantispyware (http://www.superantispyware.com) On-Demand only in free version. Or Spyware Terminator (http://www.spywareterminator.com/) Resident scanner. Or a-Squared free (http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/) On-Demand only with free version(if using win98/ME).

Bearing in mind your missing avast 'a' icon this may be a little more than that, perhaps not. What you have done is a work around and isn't discovering why it is gone.

avast! icon missing - As a temporary measure until this is resolved you can create a desktop shortcut for this file C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashDisp.exe (the avast icon and interface to the providers).  Right click on the file and select Send To, Desktop (create shortcut). You will need to run this after each boot until the problem is resolved.

What other security based software do you have that might block new startup entries, e.g. Spybot S&D (TeaTimer), AdAware (AdWatch), SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor (StartUpGuard or OnGuard), PrevX, WinPatrol, ProcessGuard, etc. ?

Check the option in the Appearance tab of Program Settings. Or Make a link to ashdisp.exe in your startup folder.

Sorry still disturbing you but as you see I have not any Trojan but the icon is still there ... any other suggestion?
Thank you for your kind reply

Sorry but I consider Spybot S&D a bit of a lightweight in anti-spyware/trojan removal, that is why I gave the other applications.

If you aren't sending the emails then you most certainly have an undetected trojan sending this spam.

Yes, please follow DavidR's suggestion and use the programs. Something is using the internet mail ports.

After a SUPERantispyware run it seems OK even if no Troyan found.
Even the blu ball run again.
Thank you very much for your kind cooperation!!!

No problem, welcome to the forums.

However, have you rebooted your system as I suspect that as soon as you do the avast icon will be gone again, that is why we are trying to find out why it was missing and the reason for my question about other security applications.

If SAS didn't find anything then it is still an issue unresolved as it wouldn't go away on its own. So when the email icon appeared were you checking or sending email ?

Does the email icon also appear ?

Yes the email icon appears again but something has changed I have all my icons in the right part of the tray bar again. I send you another snapshot.
Thanks again!!

I think you may have to dig a little deeper. The mail icon should not appear unless you are sending/recieving mail.

Even though sas didn't find anything, you should try a scan with avg antispyware. Did you update sas before scanning with it?

If you still detecting any strange behavior or even you're sure you're not clean, maybe it will be good to test your machine with anti-rootkit applications (http://www.antirootkit.com/software/index.htm). I suggest AVG (http://www.grisoft.com/doc/download-free-anti-rootkit/us/crp/0), Panda (http://research.pandasoftware.com/blogs/research/archive/2007/04/27/New-Panda-Anti_2D00_Rootkit-_2D00_-Version-1.07.aspx) and/or F-Secure BlackLight (http://www.f-secure.com/blacklight/try_blacklight.html).

Also, if you still detecting strange behaviors or you want to be sure you're clean, maybe making a HijackThis (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/hijackthis.php) log to post here and, specially, scan and submit to on-line analysis the RunScanner (http://www.runscanner.net/) log would help to identify the problem and the solution.

The reason for the question was for confirmation that it wasn't anything you might be doing so we can get on with trying to find the malware responsible.
Was anything found with AVG anti-spyware ?

It is possible that what is sending these emails is hidden by something else and that is why avast and SAS aren't finding anything. This could be a rootkit and the anti-rootkit tools suggested by Tech may be able to remove that so the spambot can then be found.
