I bought a new computer with Vista Home Premium installed on it, it also had Norman Anti-Virus, I uninstalled it and installed Avast. Avast worked perfectly for a couple of weeks, and then suddenly I couldn't get any kind of real time protection started, not automatically, nor manually. I also have these programs on my computer, could they have messed up my Avast? AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware 2007. I have also tried uninstalling, rebooting, reinstalling and then rebooting many times, also tried to download a new installer, but that didn't work either.

I suggest an installation from the scratch:
1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
2. Boot.
3. Use Avast Uninstall (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html) for complete uninstallation.
4. Boot.
5. Install again the last version.
6. Boot.
7. Check and post the results.
Also check how are set your avast! services?
Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services
I suppose you have to have four avast! services:
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashServ.exe (avast! antivirus service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\aswUpdSv.exe (avast! Update Service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe (avast! Web Scanner service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe (avast! e-Mail Scanner service)
The two first of them should be Automatic loaded and the two last Manually loaded.

Followed the steps and still it doesn't work.
Yes, I have those four services, only the Update Service works, others can't be opened even manually. And yes, Antivirus Service and Update Service are on Automatic and Web Scanner Service and e-Mail Scanner Service are on Manually. I also checked from the Avast! folder and the files are there.
Could this give a clue of what's wrong? Everytime I Click the Avast! icon (with the red circle) in the system tray, it gives me an error message:
avast!: The AAVM subsystem detected a RPC error.
The operation could not be completed.
And then there's a link to this page (http://www.avast.com/eng/faq-red-circle.html), which obviously doesn't help because it gives the same instructions you gave me.

Do you use a firewall? Which one?
Do you have any other antivirus installed in your system right now?
How did you uninstall Norman?
Any other security programs that could interfere?
Any useful information into Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Events, specially 'Errors'.

Only Windows' own firewall and the one in my router (D-Link DI-524).
No other anti_virus_ softwares, only the ones listed in my first post.

Found two related to Avast!:
AAVM - scanning error: x_AavmCheckFileDirectEx: avfilesScanReal of C:\Windows\System32\SyncCenter.dll failed, 00000005.
AAVM - scanning warning: x_AavmCheckFileDirectEx [UNI]: C:\Windows\System32\SyncCenter.dll (C:\Windows\System32\SyncCenter.dll) returning error, 00000005.

SyncCenter.dll is a part of Windows Vista. Default location: %WinDir%\System32\SyncCenter.dll
Error 5 is access denied. Well, it's not being easy to find the problem and help you. Sorry.

Avira is the other (very good) free one. The last resource, AVG.
