Playing new just released Forza Horizon 5 and Avast silently is causing the game to lockup and crash to the desktop, disabling the antivirus temporarily fixes the issue and it never crashes again until the antivirus it enabled.
I'm running Avast Premium Security 21.8.2487 (build 21.8.6586.697), running on Windows 11 Pro 21H1 build 22000.282
Hopefully this can get looked into as this game and antivirus are not playing nicely together whatsoever.

Hello, last assembly (21.9.2494 (assembly 21.9.6698.561)) Everything has such a problem.
-
Hello
this is probably caused by the game anti-cheat engine. Can you please try to make AV exclusion for the game folder? It is installed in folder
C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Microsoft.624F8B84B80_3.405.2.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe
-
Unfortunately not working
-
Can we have a fix for this... exclusions do not work only uninstalling works for my instance
-
Any updates on this?
The gaming forums are on fire.
I tried adding the exception as suggested above, but this didn't work.
Steam forums are now suggesting to just completely uninstall Avast, because the game works if you do this.
Edit: I'm on Avast version 21.9.2494 (build 21.9.6698.561)
-
Updated to the latest Avast version and added an exception the the entire Windows app folder, still crashes. Thankfully the game does work flawlessly for hours at a time when Avast is disabled but that's unacceptable for an antivirus.
Seems Avast had a similar issue a few years back with FH3 that was Avasts fault once again.

Avast premuim user here. Unless it's uninstalled, FH5 crashes on startup.
-
I can also confirm that Avast is causing the game to crash. Ive tried as suggested to update Avast to the latest version and to make a exclusion of the games folder. This doesnt fix it and the only way to fix it for me is to uninstall Avast. I hope you can fix this issue fast as it is making me consider cancelling my premium subscription and seeking a alternative anti-virus

Hello,
can somebody (afflicted user ) provide a Process Monitor log (.pml file) of such failed game execution?
Process Monitor

Thank you

Only filtered log for FH5 execution. Sorry that unfiltered one is over 9.8 Gigabyte.

Thank you very much gawainrol. I can see that werfault.exe was executed right before process termination, which means that crash dump was probably generated in c:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\WER, can you please check the folder and provide the crash dump?

I did, look

For those of you affected: can you please also provide Avast support package: https://support.avast.com/en-us/article/Submit-support-file/

Thank you doom2004, can you please try following: disable HW virtualization in Avast troubleshooting settings. Computer reboot is required after modifying this option. After the reboot, test the game please.
-
It helped, she started!
Mutted by me actions do not create security threats?
-
No, it is not crucial to your protection.
-
Thanks for the help!
-
Disabling HW virtualization in Avast troubleshooting settings doesn't work for me.
Putting Avast in Passive Mode got the game running. Does this completely disable Avast's protection?
-
Hello Leopagne,
did you reboot after disabling HW virtualization in troubleshooting settings? Can you provide a support package please? https://support.avast.com/en-us/article/Submit-support-file/
-
Hi Spec8472
I am not sure I am doing this right. Here is the link to the file I created with the Support Tool:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1cyC-f_cMvg6oEMihD_ZG75YLUq8CU9g0/view?usp=sharing
PS: Yes, I have rebooted since I disabled HW virtualization.
-
Thank you Leopagne, but the link is inaccessible for me. What was the File ID? It was visible on the last dialog of support tool. It is also visible in generated file name. For example File ID of file "20211106_2208_N3LYP_25351.zip" is N3LYP.
-
Thanks for your patience, Spec8472.
I ran the Support Tool again and generated a new file. I think I had the wrong permissions on the link:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1NuWpyftJfUuObG1ljqM5kr8xMjxY6abd/view?usp=sharing
The filename is 20211106_2239_WJJJF_4148345845.zip, so the ID is WJJJF.
I also told the app to upload to support if that helps.
Thanks!
-
Thank you Leopagne, I got your support package.
I can see you have disabled HW virtualization in troubleshooting settings already. Can you please also create exception for your Forza Horizon 5 game folder?
C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Microsoft.624F8B84B80_3.405.2.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe
The exception can be created in Avast UI Settings -> Exceptions -> Add Exception
Please retest the game after creating this exception.
-
Same problem here, disabled HW virtualization is not enough, I have whether to put Avast in Passive Mode or Uninstall it to run ForzaHorizon5 on my PC.
The proposed exception doesn't work either, even if I had the ForzaHorizon5.exe file as an exception with its path.
-
I have the same Problem.
Disabled HW virtualization and game path exeption.
I must Avast disable all Services and change to Passive Mode to run ForzaHorizon5 on my PC.

Hello lucasfrance and LilJay86,

Idem, Microsoft Store version of Forza Horizon 5

Thank you doom2004, can you please try following: disable HW virtualization in Avast troubleshooting settings. Computer reboot is required after modifying this option. After the reboot, test the game please.
I'm using Avast Premium Security (newest version) and this finally helped to get past the PG logo after launching the game (Steam version), thank you so much! I was about to uninstall the program after ages of trying to find a solution. No other game had this issue before.

Hi,
I have also tried this but have the same problem. The game crashes before it even loads.
Thank you.
-
Thank you,
we have a fix for Steam version of the game. It will be released in form of micro-update soon. We are still trying to figure out MS Store version of the game.
-
hi there
before i could get into the game for like 1 minute then it just would crash but when i turned off hw virtulisation it wouldnt be able to get past the playground games screen im on ms store version of fh5 and have put the game folder and .exe as a exception with avast one.
-
MS Store user here. Waiting for a fix. Please update us (:
-
Same issue, game crashes on launch. Steam version of the game, Avast on Windows.
I tried a million things, including turning off all Avast shields, and core shields, and adding scan exceptions to steam/x86 and the forza folder, and it would still crash. I then fully uninstalled Avast, and restarted, and the crashing problem went away.
This is pretty ridiculous, the whole point of settings exceptions, is to stop avast from breaking things in that directory. Whats the point if the exceptions you set dont work?
-
Hello there
the problem why the exeption is not working - is that the folder to the Files
C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Microsoft.624F8B84B80_3.405.2.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe\*.*
have restricted permission.
effektiv permission
System : Read, execute
Local user: read
unknown user / Microsoft Account : Read , execute
The Avast Software have no permission - to read the folder or to access/look on it.
On my system the only way to play the game, when i turn off the software for a period.
maybe the hash from the forzahorizon5.exe file can help, to bring it to a secure execption for the application.

Settings->General->Exceptions->Add Exception (manually enter string *\ForzaHorizon5.exe )

This exception does not work for me. The issue can be avoided only by disabling Avast shields.
Seems that there is no proper way in Avast to add UWP application to Avast exception. I think this point should be investigated by Avast team.

Microsoft Store user here on Windows 10, also having problems running Forza 5. Currently running the latest version of free Avast at time of writing.
For me the game crashed during the "Playground Games" screen initially, then after disabling the virtualisation option in Avast the game wouldn't boot at all. I've tried adding the exceptions for the .exe and the game folder with no luck, the only thing that worked was disabling all the core shields in Avast and then the game runs flawlessly.

Then turn off Avast's shields before playing the game and activate them after finishing till the issue is solved. I believe Avast is trying their best to fix it as soon as possible. Some other Antivirus products are also having issues with the game, so it's a bit complicated I guess.

That's what I'm doing, but by telling them when and how the game responds to certain settings I hope to help them identify and fix the problem faster. When I finish work tonight I'm also going to set the shields to deactivate for 10mins and see if I can get the game running, then wait and see if the game continues to function after the shields come back on. That information could also help isolate the issue, so I'll provide it too!
-
Please fix it. Some of us here are even paying for Avast and I don't want to delete it. I see from other anti-virus forums like Bitdefender that they've managed to solve the issue and already rolling updates. So please do something regarding this issue.

Avast is already working with the users. Your input really isn't of any help.

For me the same. To allow the ForzaHorizon5.exe has no effect.

Ok, interestingly if you disable the Avast shields for 10mins and then boot the game it runs absolutely fine and when the shields come back on it continues to run. The only downside is that the online mode is kind of broken and the game keeps prompting you to return to free roam for some reason. I'm assuming that once the shields are back up the anti-cheat gets a bit broken and the online mode kicks you out intermittently. If you're playing single player it's not an issue but all the online events are a bit buggy.
Hope this helps some of you play the game but also keep your PC secure!
-
Same here... disabled for 10mins, game runs fine (except for online connectivity).
Eagerly awaiting a fix.

Have you tried manually updating the virus definitions?
-
What do you mean by Manually updating the virus definitions? I updated through the Avast application, (engine and virus definitions and program) was that wrong? If so, where else can I get the update definitions?

Hi again! Yes those were the ones that I updated and they look identical too yours (same versions). But it seems to have solved the issue for others in the replies, which is weird. Not sure what else I should try.

Hi Philip4k,
it's strange that it didn't help you.
Please try to reboot your system.

Have you made sure that Windows Defender isn't also running at the same time? Forza Horizon 5 seems to have an issue with almost all the popular antivirus/malware suites. I would also go to the app settings and try doing a repair and/or reset to see if that fixes the crash. Good luck!

Defender turns itself off whenever you install any other AV.

Windows Defender is off. I also did a repair of the avast application and a reboot of the computer but it still crashes after playing for 2-3 minutes. I do however play the game from the Xbox application, maybe that's the problem? I read on Forzas twitter that they will come out with fix/patches later this week so I have my fingers crossed.

I also play through the Xbox app, you could try resetting the Windows Store and the Xbox App but I'm not convinced that would fix the issue. Fingers crossed that the patch fixes the issue for you or someone here can suggest something else. Does disabling the shields fix the issue for you? If so, you might want to try a fresh install of Avast to see if that fixes it.

Does disabling the shields fix the issue for you?
hi,
Good question, Philip4k did not clearly tell us if the problem came from avast before the update.
FH5 is also known for compatibility issues with other things than antivirus. ;)
a list of applications that can crash the game:

After the update AV 21.9 (211110-8) the game is working. THX for the fix.

That's it. ;-)

Hello again! I just realised I have other apps like Nahimic Audio and Discord that might be the problem. Should have checked the list of programs that might crash FH5 other than anti viruses. Guess we can close this thread as it seems like it's fixed on Avasts end. Thanks for all the replys and stuff :)! Have a great evening!
-
Game is now stable and does not crash, however I believe the online connectivity is still being affected.
-

I thought that too but it's hard to say if it's just launch-week server issues or Avast interfering with the game. If you disable the shields for longer does it fix the issue or do you still get the error messages?
-
Here's what i did to fix it -
Under Protection > Firewall > Application rules > Search Forza > Locate ForzaHorizon5.exe > Change Allowed connections to All connections.
-
I tried adding an exception definition (for MS Store), I tried the virus definition update, I've tried running as administrator, I've allowed "all connections" and used "auto-decide" for the other connection requests (I've also tried "Ask"), and I've tried shutting down all other applications besides Avast. No luck. It will run beautifully if I turn off "all shields" on Avast without running as administrator and even with other programs running. I have the latest version of Avast (paid subscription). My PC is 100% up-to-date including drivers. I don't want to simply play without an antivirus running. Any other suggestions?
