Title: Avast won't update
Post by: StarFoxA on October 03, 2007, 08:27:07 PM
For some reason, I can't get Avast to update. It tells me it can't connect to the http://download105.avast.com/ server. My firewall is on, but Avast is in the exceptions. What could be the problem?

Basically, check the log files (or post the last 150 lines of the logs):
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log or
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\setup.log

Also check:

1) If your subscription allows the update right now (i.e., if it is not expired). Home (free) version need registering each 14 months.
I hope you haven't bought a license from a site on this list: http://www.avast.com/eng/fraudulent-sales-of-avast-products.html

Also, bad jollyroger.vpu file could contain banned registration keys with error and then update fails because of an invalid key. See how to download a new jollyroger.vpu, http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=27185.msg222148#msg222148.

2) If your firewall settings and allow avast.setup to connect.
If you're not sure, just turn off your firewall (to be sure the update failure is not due to it).
Maybe you should 'remove' avast.setup entry, try to update, receiving a new alert from the firewall, allowing it and checking it to remember.

3)  Check your proxy settings into avast!:
Left click the avast icon > Settings
Update (Basic) > Details > Proxy
Make sure your browser is not set to "Work Offline" (this option is generally in the File menu).
If it doesn't help, try switching from "Auto-detect" to "No proxy" (I'm assuming you're not connecting to the Internet via proxy).
You can run proxycfg -d in a DOS window to make your computer connect direct, without proxy. You can run proxycfg -h for help.

4) Also you can try changing update service's login account, follow this:
Open services control panel (e.g. Start->Run, and type: services.msc
Double-click on avast! iAVS4 Control Service to show properties. Switch to LogOn page.
Enter administrator account name and password.
Do the same for avast! Antivirus service.
    Then start update again.

5) The last option, check if the servers.def file is corrupt or 0KB (C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\servers.def).
You can try and download the servers.def file, http://files.avast.com/iavs4x/servers.def and replace the one in the avast setup folder.

I'm not that "computer savvy," so do I have to post the last 150 lines from each of those files, or from one or the other?

Also, I think that 4. might be the problem. Where exactly do I type in this information?

C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log should be ok.

Also, I think that 4. might be the problem. Where exactly do I type in this information?
Sorry, I can only make screenshots in Portuguese...

When I typed in the username and password and then restarted the service it told me that the logon name was invalid.

Seems that you're not being able to download C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\servers.def file.
You can try and download the servers.def file, http://files.avast.com/iavs4x/servers.def and replace the one in the avast setup folder.

What this log showed was that the user had a perfectly good servers.def file.

The log showed that every attempt to download from each avast server failed and that avast trashed every server from the servers.def file.

The log showed the servers.def file was depleted by avast and that it could then not download a new servers.def file.

This is repeated over and over and over and over and over and over again in this forum.

It really is time that the avast team made some intellectual investment in eliminating this unnecessarily repetitive problem for avast users.

If, as so often claimed by avast, this is a user problem then please give much better advice to users on how to overcome your failure.  I find it hard to think of another function that has the reported update problems that I see in this forum.  You know I am a supporter ... but, for the life of me, I cannot think of another product that has the number of reported regular update problems (other than Thunderbird ... do you want to be in that class?) than avast.

Well, I'm also having several other strange online related problems.

I got Avast to replace Norton (which sucked, Avast is doing great. Got rid of four Trojans). Norton could never update either. And, in Halo when I make a game, nobody can join. Another problem that recently miraculously fixed itself is that Outlook would never Send/Receive mail. Same with Thunderbird. Now they both can with no problems whatsever.

Isolate the problem will help troubleshooting.
1) Remove NAV through Add/Remove programs from Control Panel. Boot.
2) Use Norton Removal Tool for Windows 2000/XP/Vista (http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Norton_Removal_Tool_for_Windows_2000XPVista/1169144666/1).
3) Boot.
4) Install avast! Boot.
5) See what you get.

Maybe not. CCleaner is far from the deepness of that Symantec tool that you can try at any time, even now when time has passed by since the uninstallation.

Add Remove problems isn't the issue but remnants left in the registry like virtual device drivers which can conflict, so to be absolutely sure you should run the removal tool designed for the task.

Can you say exactly which part doesn't work, the link to the page or the actual download as both work for me ?

What errors or messages are displayed, etc. ?
You could try this link for the removal tool that can remove the remnants of a number of different Norton Programs:

The problem might be browser, since I'm using Firefox.

EDIT: And I get a "Page cannot be displayed" when I click on Download Now.

Wait, I looked closer at that picture and saw that you were using Firefox too.

Have a quick peek at your hosts file

Windows XP = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC

It's an extentionless file called hosts. See if there is any reference to symantec.

All right, I found it somewhere on the web and downloaded it and it removed Norton. I'm attempting to run an update now. How long should they take, because this one has been trying to update one file for the past couple of minutes.

The avast updates VPS shouldn't take to long (and I'm on dial-up) as they are incremental and only download what the difference between the VPS version you have and the current version. This would normally be measures in seconds rather than minutes for VPS updates (longer if it is a program update, unlikely if you have just installed).

There should be a pop-up window with progress bars to show it is downloading or installing, etc. do you see this ?

You previously mentioned you have a firewall and that avast was excluded, what is that firewall ?
What file have you excluded ?
It should be avast.setup, which only gets created when an update is available once complete that is removed.

I added avast.setup to the exceptions on the firewall (it is just the generic Windows Firewall found on all XPs). I tried running the update again and got the same error message as previously noted (The cannot find file specified one).

This pretty much is the problem Alan explained in reply #9 of this topic, http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=30775.msg255623#msg255623 (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=30775.msg255623#msg255623).

Like Alan, I have no idea why this happens and I can't see a way round it as the update isn't being blocked by your firewall as it is getting out to check the download servers but failing.

Now I'm probably clutching at straws here also but the ccleaner mentioned in an earlier post could have a hand in this as at the end of your log are several entries for files not found in the Temp folder.
Quote
C:\DOCUME~1\PAULDI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\_av_proI.tm~a02728\onefile, servers.def, error: 0x00000002

I have seen this in another post where ccleaner was set to clean temp files on boot and avast had at that point already identified a connection and was starting to check for updates before ccleaner started its clean-up of temp files. So if you are using ccleaner in this way add the 48 hour rule not to remove files unless they are over 48 hours old or disable that clean on boot and see if that helps.

Though this shouldn't be a factor if your are trying to do a manual update from the avast 'a' icon ?

I added avast.setup to the exceptions on the firewall (it is just the generic Windows Firewall found on all XPs).
Windows XP firewall does not block the outbound connection to update avast.
It's not a firewall problem.
The problem seems to be in an incorrectly downloaded file C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\servers.def. You can try and download the servers.def file, http://files.avast.com/iavs4x/servers.def and replace the one in the avast setup folder.

@DavidR: CCleaner is already set to delete Temp files after they get 48 hours old. ;)
@Tech: I think it's working now. I got this: Information about current update:
Total time: 5:43

EDIT: That's strange. It appeared to work with the manual update, but when it started doing an automatic update, it didn't work.
EDIT2: It's not working now. I get the same error.

If CCleaner is set to run on system start, Avast auto updates will fail.  Having CCleaner delay cleaning Windows temp files for 48 hours will not solve this problem, which I first experienced in July when Avast updated the program to version 4.7.1029.  CCleaner also had a program update around the same time.  Admittedly, some people have reported this problem earlier than July.  CCleaner is deleting or blocking something that Avast needs to auto update.

Until this issue can be pinpointed and solved, there are three options ...

#1  To run Avast with auto updates, run CCleaner manually (uncheck run at system start).
#2  If CCleaner must be run automatically on system start, Avast must be updated manually.

If you want Avast to update automatically and you want a file cleaner to run automatically, the third option is to uninstall CCleaner and download and install IE Privacy Keeper (free program with many of CCleaner's options and it also works with Firefox).  IE Privacy Keeper has secure deletion and gets rid of IE's index.dat files.  Configure it to run at system shutdown (which you can't do with CCleaner) and there's no conflict with Avast auto updates.

Hope this helps someone.
