I was surprised when I saw that the 36067 members of avast forums:
17368 has 0 posts: 48,15%
6004 has just 1 post: 16,64%
8686 has from 2 to 5 posts: 24,08%
Just to think about Internet habits of the people while joining a forum ::)
-
Well many will have registered even though they just monitor the activity and use the forums search function (I hope).
Where did you dig up the stats, see image.

Members button above...
Edited: remove the picture as seems to be an antispam policy.

Ah that will be why I can't see it, no member button on the Babylon theme, there are a couple of other anomalies in the Babylon theme (like no display of member Flags, I guess because there is on Member Map either), but I really prefer it to the others.
-
Choose member list option in the board.
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?action=mlist
-
That is what I have been saying that option isn't available in the Babylon theme, anywhere.
Yes, it would be easy to click the link you gave, but the option isn't there for the future without finding the link again or bookmarking it. I just can't understand why there are these anomalies in the Babylon theme.
-
More to this than meets the eye, permissions error again.
So unless the members area is off limits when using the Babylon theme or I haven't got permission, I probably haven't been here long enough ;D ;D
Looks like I haven't been here long enough as thes Member button isn't present in the default theme and the same permissions error occurs.
So all I can assume that some of your olf Moderator permissions still exist.
-
But the option isn't there for the future without finding the link again or bookmarking it.
The option is a live link on the bottom of the board. I've changed to that theme and it's there...

I can't believe :-\

David I don't have it either. Regardless of the theme I use. ???

I'm afraid not no live link, if you remember I believe this was removed after the spamming of the PM function. See image.

There is most certainly different about your permissions as Bob a former moderator also doesn't have this functionality/permission.

Regardless of my power... I can't change anything, I can't add anything.
Although, they could trust me a little... ;D

David,
That's because you and I aren't Uberavangelist's. ;D ;D

It's a label nothing more...
David is closer to that label mark...

And you're not going to get one unless it comes from Alwil. :)

From Kubecj or Pavel...

I thought that feature was there some time ago, but I couldn't find. I tried the link just after Tech posted it, but same page as you guys got.
Now what you posted makes sense, no point in still looking for it.
Ah well, another wild goose chase. Though, I have no idea what I'd do with a wild goose if I ever caught one. ::)

So, now it should be fixed (denied) ;)
Too wide permissions for 'special groups'.

I could have told you that that was going to happen..... :'(

Kubecj, I have to express my hard feeling with the procedures of punishment when something is going against the rules. I never used any information of the board against the users, I never spammed no one, I just being here to help and enjoy.
But like Bob feels, sometimes, there is no forgive, there is no pardon, there is no hey, Tech, you're going to further, these is a restrict info...
Sometimes I feel like a 12 year old boy here... It's not the fact that happened, as I use the statistics for nothing, but what bothers me is the policy. This happened before on the Off-Topic forum time...
To friends, everything. To enemies, the law.
I really feel disappointed... (http://www.countingcows.de/aerger.gif)
Maybe I should give a time to this forum.
-
Sorry, I don't understand.
You've pointed to a deficiency in the permissions settings. Thanks for that. I fixed that so that basically now all users have the same rights. You were not punished.
-
You were not punished.
I can't see this way... sorry, maybe I'm too sensible to other people behavior. Maybe I'll be better after some time. Who knows.
-
We know you wouldn't misuse these statistics or the members search function.
But, basically it was a security hole that may not have been just you would be able to access this function, so it had to be closed.
-
But, basically it was a security hole
David,
I think it was one of the Mod functions that wasn't removed from Tech when the Off-Topic
forum was closed.
You and I had that privilege revoked and Techs was overlooked.
I don't think it has anything to do with security.
-
Nope. Basically some groups of users had their permissions too open - that's wrong when it's not by decision but by omission. This version of SMF has no way of per-user permission settings. This omission on my side has nothing to do with Tech's ex-moderatorship and the 'fix' was not 'against' Tech or anyone personally.
-
Ekhmmm guys i am having a little trouble understanding how the ability to view forum stats is a security risk can anyone explain ? Thanks !
-
It is not about stats, but about list of all members.
-
It is not about stats, but about list of all members.
OK but why can't i view the forum stats anymore ?
-
Which stats?

Tech, I feel bad about this. I think I started it with that question I asked you and you where just trying to help me . Sorry. :'(

You don't need to be sorry. Why?
I'm not upset with you.

Which stats?
...
-
I wasn't talking about the member list, but about general forum stats you can get to when clicking this icon, was there a function in there with a member list ? I really don't remember ever seing a member list like the one Tech showed ...
This is what i am talking about ...

When you click that icon you get a permissions error. So all stats would appear to be buttoned down.

Same here :'( :'(
-
So it would appear it's buttoned down for everybody. Interesting, so the general forum statistics poses a security risk aswell ?? Or is there another reason for making it inaccessible ? Just wondering.
-
Can any alwil software member explain in clear details why it is such a problem that the public has access to the list of the forum members as well as their post counts ?
Thanks

You can also ask this question from the other side. Why should anybody except Alwil team have such info? (And for example get easily the list of public emails from one place?)
-
I agree that there technicaly is no need for anyone but Alwil to have access to this information, however we are coming to a world where users (people) like to have lots of information; this was encouraged by the internet. So even thought there is no need for people to see those lists and stats in their rightful mind people want to know that if they want to they can go ahead and check that list. So it seems that there are no advantages to make that list available but there doesn't seem to be any disadvantages either, so why doesn't alwil want to give its loyal users the freedom to consult if needed that lists ? I requires a alwil to spare just a few minutes and would end this settlement as well as make a lot of users happy and wouldn't cost anything more then just clicks. :)
If everyone did a favor to one person in the whole world everyday then the world would be a better place, do your daily favor and except that favor to be returned :)

There are people and people... The old avast users aren't just people. That is what bothers me.
That was useful a lot of times, I mean, to have the statistics. Sometimes you want to IM some Evangelists and don't have to look for their forum names just to send an IM.
-

The same could be said for the Off-Topic forum but, that's not happening either. :'(

So if i understood you correctly the public was able to see the members emails in the forum stats ? If that's the case then yes i understand why you closed the forum stats(and i am talking about the general forum stats here not the member list), i really wouldn't like my e-mail address where everyone can see it.
But i remember i had the ability to view the forum stats from when i first joined this forum(that's about 3 yrs ago) and i really got used to having those options there. Naturally i wondered why take this option away after all this time. Why didn't you just disable it in the first place ?

No, you could see ONLY the emails of the users that allow his/her address to be shown (the default is hidden).
