Hi all. Reading brings me to tears but I have read the 4 page faq post, I've done searches looking for others who are as lost as I am (and can't find any). I hate to ask for handholding, so I'll ask if there is another dummies type thread to get me confident in my new setup?
I installed the free home version 4.7 and occasionally see the icon spinning. So I guess it's working. I tried to find where I select options but I can't find it. I did successfully do a scan on my system but it found nothing.
What I'm wanting to know is if I'm protected, if things are working right.. for example a specific question is when I bring up the window by clicking the icon I see Network Shield and P2P Shield are grayed out... what are they, should I have them on? Then what settings for standard and web shields.. I am totally lost as to what this stuff is. Maybe I'm in over my head :(

What options is it you are looking for ?
Left click the avast 'a' icon and that will open an On-Access Scanner window or right click the avast 'a' icon and select On-Access Protection Control. If there is a Details... >> click that button and you will see all the different Providers (Shields) and their settings. Don't go tweaking without first reading the avast help file, Resident Protection, so you know what it is you are doing.
The Default avast settings provide a good balance between protection and performance until you get more used to the program.
Providers that are greyed out aren't running, however both of the provider you mentioned P2P and Network Shield are enabled by default, this is what I meant by not tweaking. If you haven't terminated these options then there is something wrong with your installation. You should have the Network Shield enabled, if you don't know what P2P (peer to peer, file sharing) then it is doubtful if you have any of the applications that it monitors.
What avast processes are running in Task Manager, they begin with ash or asw, see image ?

I am as far as opening the Protection Control box and see the 6 details.. I'm pretty sure I changed the default settings and that's why I was looking for help because I can't find anywhere to turn them back on.
In task manager processes I have ashWebSv, ashMailSv, ashServ, aswUpdSv.
This is my first and only installation of Avast. I was confused with settings and no doubt changed those last two myself... do I have to reinstall to turn them back on?

You should also have ashDisp.exe (the avast icon interface) or you would have difficulty in getting into the on-access screen.
By default the only provider that isn't enabled/started is the Outlook/Exchange provider, this would only be enabled if you had MS Outlook (not express). So by default if you hover the mouse pointer over the avast 'a' icon it would show avast! On-Access Scanner: 7 Provider(s) total, 6 running.
For providers that are greyed out, select that provider's icon and click the Start button, you will be asked if you want to persist the changes, answer Yes.

See now I do feel like a dummy.. press start. ok :) now I have 6 of 6 running. I don't use Outlook for mail, I use Thunderbird. I was using Norton and ran the uninstall (plus looked for folders) and deleted everything Norton I could find.

It's not enough.
1) Remove NAV through Add/Remove programs from Control Panel. Boot.
2) Use Norton Removal Tool for Windows 2000/XP/Vista 2008.0.0.21 (http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Norton_Removal_Tool_for_Windows_2000XPVista/1169144666/1).
3) Boot.
4) Install avast! Boot.
5) See what you get.
Full SymNRT info:
1. Download and save these three files to the Windows desktop:
a) ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/linked_files/tsgen/MSIFIX.bat
b) ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/linked_files/tsgen/SymNRT.exe
c) ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/linked_files/tsgen/SYMMSICLEANUP.reg
2. Run the three files that you just downloaded
a) On the Windows desktop, double-click the MSIFIX icon.
Click Run.
A black window may appear very briefly.
b) On the Windows desktop, double-click the SymNRT icon.
Click Run.
Click Next.
Click I accept the License Agreement, and click Next.
Type the letters and numbers that you see in the white box, and then click Next.
Click Yes or OK at each prompt.
You may need to click more than once. Your computer may be restarted for you more than once.
You may be asked to repeat some steps after the computer restarts.
c) On the Windows desktop, double-click the SYMMSICLEANUP icon.
Click Run, and then click Yes.
Click OK.
3. Boot.
