Title: Anyone using ZoneAlarm Free - Help please
Post by: GrahamE on November 20, 2007, 06:07:08 PM
Hello everyone,

I've been having problems recently with Avast freezing during scans, and due to the incredible efforts of Igor and Vlk, the problem has been solved. It was caused by conflict with Kaspersky drivers, probably installed by ZoneAlarm, which it would seem uses the drivers as part of it's program. I'm wondering if anyone else has been having a problem, but more importantly, would you mind checking to see if you have any of these entries on your PC. The typed one is the one I had to delete to stop the conflict, the ones in the image are entries for the offending item ('Klif') which are still on my system.

C:\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\Klif

Many thanks for any help.

Graham.

Graham, I've tested ZA and avast on Vista. I have a delay problem in each connection. So I've uninstalled it. Right now, I have no 3rd party firewall. I do not know that ZA was using Kaspersky drivers but, indeed, klif seems to be a Kaspersky file.

Hi Tech,

Thanks for replying. Sorry, what does that mean?

You're not alone. I have one computer (laptop) with Vista and other desktop with XP.
In both, a dual boot system with Kubuntu 7.10 ;)

You don't use ZA on the XP system either, any more?

GrahamE,

I'm still on XP as well (Media Ctr).  I use ZA free (version:7.0.302.000) and don't have any problem with avast! freezing.

I checked for the files you listed.  I don't have the one that you typed and said you deleted (Klif)... and I didn't expect to either since you deleted.  The only one I have in the image you posted is the first one... under the 'catroot'.  All of the others I don't have.  In fact, I don't have the subdir 'instdrivers' under 'avsys' under Zonelabs.

Hope this helps.

Oops... edit. I do have the 'catroot', but not the 'instdriver' subdir.

Hi Rick,

It's very interesting. I'm using version 7.0.408.000, which is three updates ahead of your version (http://www.filehippo.com/download_zonealarm_free/tech/ ). Is there a reason why you're on that version - did you have trouble with newer versions? I can find no mention of antivirus protection being added to later free versions, so why I have those files is another mystery.

No... a long time ago I've changed to Comodo (v2), working smoothly on XP with avast.

GrahamE,

Re read my post.  Had to edit the subdir I don't have.

Years ago I was on ZAP (pro version) when I still had Win98.  All of a sudden I had all kinds of problems with it.  I had purchased a 2 yr licensce, and lost my second year of use as I had to fall back to a prior version. Then when I upgraded to a new PC less than a yr ago (WinXP though... never Vista), I went with the free version.

I guess I'm just leary of upgrading ZA again thus taking a chance the newer version won't work.  ::)

GrahamE,

Re read my post.  Had to edit the subdir I don't have.

Ok, thanks Rick. I've heard of people experiencing problems with different ZA updates. I've been fine with this one up until this recent problem though. It remains a mystery. Hopefully someone using a later version will post. It looks like my best bet is going to be a complete removal of ZA and a reinstall, and hopefully the offending files won't be there any more.

Graham.

Funnily enough, i looked at that earlier, and was going to download it in case I wanted to reinstall it (I thought I'd get a fresh download). On starting the download though, it's a 205KB file. How does that work?

More searching revealed this http://www.majorgeeks.com/ZoneAlarm_Free_d388.html which is a 205KB download of my version. Note what it says under "Editor's Note". Could this be where the 'extras' come from?

I still don't understand why the problem only just occurred though, I've had my current version installed for 2 months at least, with Avast scanning fine.

It's a small tool that download (or download and install) the full setup of the free (or paid) version.

I dumped Zone Alarm free a few weeks ago and went to Comodo free. My connectivity problems ceased. With the last builds of Zone Alarm I've had problems loosing connectivity when a browser wasn't connected to the web. There were also pauses while surfing with Zone Alarm that are gone now.

I completely uninstalled ZA, removed anything I could find in regedit, ran CCleaner and RegSeeker, and then reinstalled. Every single file that refers to Klif is back, including the one that caused all the trouble. And yet Avast is still scanning fine. Is it me........?

The thing I like about ZoneAlarm is that at the start, when it's asking permission for programs to connect to the internet, it makes it obvious what's trying, by giving you the name of the program rather than a set of numbers, which means you are always pretty confident as to whether you should allow something access. You can also tick a box so that you aren't constantly told of when it's blocked something from the internet ('informational alerts'). Is Comodo similar?

Oh, that's ok then. I always tick to not show them anyway. I didn't want to be having to make choices about a set of numbers that I wouldn't be able to interpret, that's all. I think I might give it a go and see what it's like. Thanks Tech.

Sorry, I know this isn't a Comodo Forum, but I'm trying out 2.4.18.184 (so far, so good!!), and I was wondering if you'd upgraded to Comodo 3 yet, or is it best to wait for next update in case of bugs, etc....

Thanks,

Graham, on XP you can use v3 and it should work. Something (or much things) will be different. But after all you can manage.
On Vista, is a shot in the dark. I'll test for the 10th time... but I'm becoming skeptic on Comodo. I've updated all network drivers from HP site... let's try again and lose time...

Not Tech but.

There are a couple of topics relating to comodo 3, check the General Forums, Topic list for comodo 3 in it.

There are those who would say avoid 3.0 like the plague, yet others who think it is fine. I don't use it at all but whilst this is still early days of a new version with new features I would say it is wise to wait a little and get used to comodo on what is a stable version.

I'm doing the same with outpost pro 4.0 rather than upgrade to outpost firewall pro 2008, the latest version even though I have a lifetime license and wouldn't have to pay for the upgrade.

Tech,

Thanks, I appreciate your time. I'll upgrade and give it a try then. Funnily enough, as I logged off from here just now, Comodo tried to update (perhaps '3' is coming anyway....). I haven't noticed any difference when online, but my startup in Windows is definitely quicker - I'm almost glad I had the problems with ZA, which prompted me to change!

It's a pity there's problems on Vista.....

Thanks David. I'll check out the General Forum, and perhaps wait for a while, at least until I've read up about it. If the problems are Vista related, I should be okay, but as I said, I'll read what you've suggested, otherwise I'll be hassling people on the Comodo forums as well!! Thanks.

Hello People !!  Yes another Newbie !!  Need some tips/info regarding ZA Free and Avast Home.  I already have ZA Free installed ( 3 years now) on my laptop running Wins XP SP2.  Am going to uninstall Norton and switch to Avast.  Question:  Does ZA require shutdown before Avast install to prevent any conflicts (i've been reading some of the post re this)?  I have no other security programs installed (yeah i know, i should !!).  Any instructions to prevent conflicts with ZA and Avast would be greatly appreciated !!
If I have posted this in the wrong area of forum, sorry, and kindly redirect me if that is the case.

There is no need to shut down ZA to install avast. The problem with ZA conflict was related to the Pro versions privacy function, which isn't in the ZA free version.

NAV can be a bit of a pig to get rid of and you may need other measures, use the add remove programs to uninstall it. If you experience any remnant issues then you may need to go further.

A link worth looking at, which is a program removal tool that can remove the remnants of a number of different Norton Programs:
Removing your Norton program using SymNRT (http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039)
You can also download SymNRT, a Norton uninstall tool (http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Norton_Removal_Tool_for_Windows_2000XPVista/1169144666/1) that uninstalls all Norton 2004/2005/2006 products.

Never shut down a firewall while online!  You shouldn't have any problem installing avast with ZA.  Look at my sig. below.  I highly recommend Opera & Spyware Terminator along with avast & ZA (or PC Tools fw+).  Another excellent program is WinPatrol (http://www.winpatrol.com/).

On my desktop I use ZA, on my laptop I use PC Tools fw+.

Thanks DavdR, for the prompt reply.  I've read about NAV being a bother to get rid of and have the link bookmarked that you mentioned (should i run into any nasties !!) .
I love my ZA free and hate the thought of getting rid of it.

Welcome to the forums.
Stick around and browse the forums, especially the sticky topics at the top of each of the forums, not to mention the avast file. They provide a wealth of information to help you get the best from avast.

Thanks Rdmaloyjr.  I'll take a look at WinPatrol.  I've been using Firefox for over 3 years now and, well, am a loyal FF browser.  I know that Opera has its plus over IE (UGH!!!) and it's great that it's available.
And DavidR, I will certainly take your advice on the "sticky notes".
Thanks to you both for the info.  This is the best forum that I have been on!!  Quickest replies and no nasties to the Newbies !!!!  Cheers and hope to chat some more one of these days/nites.

Well fellas, I have (I think!!??) successfully uninstalled NAV and now am with avast! !!!  Phew !!  Have a few quieries:
What is the best way to make adjustments to avast? By that I mean, increasing configuration from "Typical" to say "Custom". And is this best?
Does avast! always perform a boot scan? or is this a one time deal?
I'm looking for some details on using avast properly. When I right click on the On-Access-Scanner or Virus Recovery Database Generator I'm wondering where I should start !!
If there is a link with information relating to these types of questions I would appreciate it. And/Or if avast.com has it (and I missed seeing it, let me know.
And, ZA functioned normally upon avast! install, with the proper pop ups.
Looking forward to hearing from you all.

I would give yourself time to get used to the program before tweaking it to within an inch of its life ;D

The avast default settings are a good balance between protection and performance.

My avast providers (that are required I don't use P2P nor Instant Messaging application's, so I have those providers Terminated). I have the Web Shield and Internet Mail providers set to High the remainder are set to Normal, the default.

I would say the place to start is the avast help file, Resident protection.

Zone Alarm does not use Kaspersky drivers. The ZA firewall technology was designed from the ground up in 2000 by one of the original two owners: Gregor Freund. The firewall was based upon a patented technology that Freund and his partner had developed for another purpose. I know this because I was involved in the original private beta testing long before it became common knowledge that they were developing a firewall.

Zone Alarm does not use Kaspersky drivers.

Hi Bob,

The Kaspersky drivers are included in the 7-series downloads, where ZA changed from being a 8-ish MB download to almost 40MB. With the newer versions, you are given the option to install the security suite including AV protection, and the drivers are included even if you just install the firewall.

Ah! So that is what the new owners did.

By the way I have used probably every version of ZA free and paid versions over the years. I even used the original outbound- only version of ZA in the late nineties before it became an inbound and outbound firewall. I'm currently using ZA free with a NAT router. And Avast! of course.

Thanks for bringing me up to date.
