This note appeared in red at the bottom of the splash screen when I inserted my U3 drive and Avast loaded but I cannot find enough information to fix the problem. Can you help please?
-
Do you use a firewall? Is avast.setup allowed to connect?
If you try to manually update avast U3, will it work?
-
Are you using the beta version of avast ?
If beta, I have just started to get these errors in the beta update.

This problem has occurred on two different computers and I have tried many alterations to the firewall settings on each, unfortunately I cannot list them as I did not record them. Essentially I lowered the security levels while Avast was loading. I could not find Avast listed in the firewall on my laptop which is running McAfee and it didn't seem to want to let me search for programs on the thumb drive, I have not tried this on the first computer yet.
I finally just removed the program, wiped the drive and reinstalled. Now I get the same error but with a code of 20000010.
What the heck? Avast has been working perfectly for me until the last week so what is going on?

I could not find Avast listed in the firewall on my laptop which is running McAfee and it didn't seem to want to let me search for programs on the thumb drive, I have not tried this on the first computer yet.
I'm not sure if the U3 version also uses avast.setup file to update. If so, this should be into your firewall settings.
I see no error on your log... but I'm not an expert on U3 version...
-
So, is there anyone out there that can help me with this issue of Avast on a SanDisk U3 drive?
-
I'm sorry I have no knowledge of the U3 version of avast.
I don't know if it is trying to update and there is no connection or a server problem so it returns the error. I have had that error when the regular version of avast failed to update, this however was with the beta version of the desktop avast, which uses different servers.
-
I have this same problem with the error code of 20000010 and the error message saying that there was an error on updating.
Upon checking the program version and virus database version, it seems that it has been updated and updating manually seems to work fine too. It just seems to be the auto update on startup. Like aspiringwannabe, I didn't have this problem a little more than a week ago.
-
What is your firewall ?
It is a possibility that it blocks all outbound connections until it is fully running and avast may have detected a connection (I assume your on broadband ?) comodo firewall is one that does.
So It may be worth delaying the avast update check.
I will wait on your answers before the next step.
-
It just seems to be the auto update on startup.
To delay the update of avast into a permanent internet connection (DSL) you can change the value AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds into avast4.ini file. Details on 'Settings' in my signature.
You could set the number of seconds to wait before attempting to update. The default is 30 but it may not be enough in some DSL systems. In this case, you can try increasing this e.g. to 60 (1 minute). That should be enough.
Alan's experience: This is especially true during Windows update week. Windows automatic updates seem to hog resources even to just determine that updates do exist but you are just not allowed to download them yet (to prevent overload of Microsoft's servers). So this is happening at every startup during the Windows update period until you have been permitted to download the updates. Although I do not have "smoking gun" logs to prove it (a bit hard to get on an overloaded system at startup) I am reasonably certain that the Windows automatic update process, at this time, can prevent the avast automatic VPS update from getting timely access to it servers and causing avast to report an automatic update error - especially on older, less powerful systems. This past week was Windows update week, some folks this week waited 4 or 5 days before being permitted to download the Windows updates through the automatic update process.

I have the problem on both my McAfee and Kaspersky systems. Both are running Windows XP and are fully up to date. The kasparsky system is a 64 bit machine with 32 bit OS on cable modem, the McAfee is 32 bit machine and OS on Verizon Wireless air card but have tried to update trough cable modem because card can be slow.
Now, I have gone in after Avast uploads and manually updated and waited for it to tell me that the program is up to date but in no longer does that so I paid attention to the files that download and they seem to be the same every time. It's seems that the downloads are not installing properly. I do not have my drive with me today to check the date on anything but I am sure that Avast is now out of date. Any other suggestions.

I'm not following you... are you installing two antivirus at the same time in the same computer? ???
-
NO, to recap.
Two systems:
First system - 32 bit machine
32 bit Windows XP
running McAfee
Second system - 64 bit machine
32 bit Windows XP
running Kaspersky
One SanDisk U3 drive running Avast which is having the update problems.
Both firewalls have been altered to allow Avast to do it's updating thing but still receiving the error. Avast has been reinstalled as well as the U3 software to see if that would help but the same error appeared.
During manual update the same files download every time and do not seem to install properly.
I feel that Avast is now out of date because it has not installed the file but cannot verify because I forgot the blasted thing at home today and did not use it this weekend.
Does that clear things up?
-
Just an update. I was correct, Avast is no longer updating. >:(
