Title: Avast tools installed itself
Post by: Pierogi on May 21, 2022, 07:29:00 AM
Hello. Yesterday at night, when i was using my PC, i noticed that Avast installed itself some kind of tool "Avast tools" with adding a new process to my task manager "aswToolsSvc.exe". Can anyone explain to me why did it happened without my permission? I wasn't updating AV that time, i was just simply using my PC without even touching anything in AV menu. Automatic updates are also disabled. Is this supposed to be like that? And what is this process exactly doing?

Edit:
I found out that this is referring to an extension "Avast cleanup". Which got installed as i noticed in my avast settings. Still, can anybody explain to me why did it happened itself?

I see what is this for, but I would still like to know why it was installed itself without my interference and with all automatic updates switched to off.

No idea, but you can remove Cleanup: https://support.avast.com/en-ww/article/96/

Yes, it seems Avast is installing new items without permission.

Today I noticed that Avast had created "Avast Free Antivirus" desktop icon and a few shortcuts in the Windows Start menu ("AVAST Sofware" folder and "Avast SafeZone Browser").

I have all automatic updates disabled (for both Avast 12.1.2272 and Windows 8.1).

EDIT: I checked again in Avast, and the automatic software updates were turned ON. I'm sure I haven't touched the setting, so Avast has itself turned them on. In the program settings, I noticed that the Passwords and the HTTPS scanning features were enabled - both are useless features for me. The program version is still the same old 12.1.2272.

How this is possible? Why the program is living its own life without any notifications to end-user?
