Noticed recently that NordVPN wasn't connecting, so did some tests and after switching off Avasts shields fixed the connection issue.
This is on windows 7, is there any other way of fixing this without either removing Avast or turning off its shields as described above?

1. Download Avast Free Antivirus: https://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup_offline.exe
2. Follow instructions: https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed Avast versions..!!)
3. Reinstall Avast with the downloaded installer from point 1.
4. Reboot.
-
So you want me to uninstall Avast first?
Thing is I've already reinstalled Avast and it didn't work, so are you saying that running that tool will help?
-
I have already tried removing and reinstalled it and so I think it is pointless doing it all again.

I'll give it a go.

Can this all be done in safe mode?

I guess you didn't read the article in the link ?
After the removal, Avast Installation has to be done in normal mode.
-
I already have avast clear on the laptop, is it recommended that I download a fresh copy?

Yes.
-
I downloaded point 1 in safe mode, will this be ok to run eventually in normal mode?
-
Has this been an issue for other users of Avast free that use nordvpn on windows?
-

No it shouldn't.
However to install Avast I confirm it must be done in normal mode, the same as you would install any other program, so windows components/functions are running normally.

Why not, surely if I'm in normal mode the avast setup file should execute fine even though it was downloaded in safe mode.
-
Sorry my mistake it should have been Yes it should, as effectively it is just an executable file.
The emphasis is on running the executable from windows normal mode.

Thanks David. Hopefully this will help with the nordvpn connection issue.

You're welcome.
I recall some other mentions about nordvpn recently, but for the life of me I can't remember or find it.

might have been my post a few months back.
no issues with nord or avast premium except DSN leak due to avast real site.
was advised to report it but just not enough hours in the day for the past 6 months.

Unfortunately I don't run any VPN, so I can't speak from personal experience.
Really testing my memory here, but I seem to recall it being to do with the Avast Firewall (even in Avast Free, which I also don't use) not being set to Private and Trusted network, etc. Which may get in the way of letting a VPN through the firewall.
Given that this is still troubling you, I would suggest setting aside some time to report the issue, or accepting this would continue to trouble you. Its a bit of which is the lessor of two evils :)

Thanks David. you are correct of course and will try and report it tomorrow when i know ill have a couple of hours free.
Not the firewall as auto sets to private but thanks for your reply.

Due to illness I haven't tried any of those kind fixes that you all have helped me with, but I'll report back as to what the results are once I have.
The laptop is very slow unfortunately, I really do need to purchase a new one.
Thanks to all.

I'll take a look at that, thanks DavidR

Is there a setting I should change on the windows firewall do you think?
-
I think it may be a setting on the Avast free program.
I don't have the Avast Firewall enabled only the windows firewall.
-
Okay, so after some tests I've found that NordVPN connects only if I disable Avasts Web Shield.
Is there anyway round this?
-
Fixed it by adding the following to the Avast exception list.
https://api.nordvpn.com/
-
Thanks for the confirmation.
I don't even think it is even possible to add a program in exceptions and I didn't know the location the VPN would be using. Which you have now added.

There are 3 options, one being URL, can't remember the other two.
-
I doubt the other two would have cut it, File/Folder and Command.
-
Yes, I think you are probably right.
