Title: Avast free with bad influences on Thunderbird?
Post by: exercise on June 02, 2022, 12:24:40 PM
Hello Avast-Team,
I'm fighting 2 bad behaviors in Thunderbird presumably caused by Avast.
Running Win 10 64bit Professional 21H2 Build 19044.1706
Thunderbird 91.9.1
Avast Free Antivirus 22.4.6011 (Build 22.4.7175.725)

Problems with activated Avast Modules :
1. Thunderbird recognizes new updates but can't download and install them
2. Pictures in mails (like newsletters) are only shown as "broken links" (yes, I already checked settings regarding privacy/security in Thunderbird)

So why do I presume, that the problems might be caused by Avast?
I simply deactivated Avast protection, started Thunderbird,
- checked version within Thunderbird and there was the button to download and upgrade
- viewed an already downloaded mail, that has shown only broken links instead of pictures, and it now shows the pictures instead of the symbol of broken links

Any suggestions, what goes wrong?
Any new setting in Avast I'm not aware of?

Thanks in advance for your support

Hi r@vast,

deactivated IPv6 as told in your link. Restarted Thunderbird but problems still the same. I don't think, it's Thunderbird, 'cause when I deactivate Avast protection, the problems are gone.....

And there's no problem with sending or receiving mails or attachements, there's only a problem with the update-function in Thunderbird and the missing pictures imbedded in mails like newsletters.

The problem with the update-function I realized some weeks ago, the problem with the not loaded pictures still lasts for months.

Thanks

Hi,

1. Enable debug logging (Menu > Settings > General > Troubleshooting > Enable debug logging) and reproduce the issue.
2. Follow instructions: https://support.avast.com/article/33/ and post the File-ID or name of the Support-File here afterwards.

Hi Asyn,

that's strange/curious. I enabled Debug logging in Avast menue, started Thunderbird, received mails (again with broken links for pictures), closed Thunderbird.
But there's no option in Avast menu to send logfiles, even after I disabled logging.
Is it possible, that there was nothing logged?

Hi Asyn,
oh, wasn't clear to me while reading that linked article.
Meanwhile I updated to 22.5.6015 (Build 22.5.7263.726). Why available updates are not shown at/in the icon, when avast is in the background?

On the way to install the support tool...

Hi,

I have exactly the same issue with Thunderburd and Avast.

I try deactivating IPV6, but it seems that now Thunderbird is very slow and instable. I don't know if it's in relation.

Hi,

Which version of Avast and Thunderbird do you have installed?
Does it help when you temporarily disable Web Shield in Avast?

So currently, you have Thunderbird ver.102, and which version did you have before deactivating Avast for 10mins?
By deactivating Avast for 10mins, you mean all the shields, not just Web Shield?
Could you also please provide a support file ID? https://support.avast.com/article/Submit-support-file

I reported this same problem here: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=320195.0

Windows 10 21H1 and 21H2
Avast 22.6.6022 (build 22.6.7355.732) - though it happened on the previous build as well
Thunderbird 91.09.0 to 91.10.0 to 91.11.0 all had same issues updating until I disabled Avast (all shields).

Hi,

I am unable to reproduce this. I was able to update from Thunderbird 91.09.0 to 91.10.0 to 91.11.0 successfully. I am unable to get any other version with or without Avast  Antivirus. Could you please post your support ID here?  https://support.avast.com/article/Submit-support-file

Yes, I have that version, but I see on another PC that version 102.3 has been released, and offered me tu update on other PCs that don't have Avast. Only one of my PC with Avast won't update, told me that there's no new updates, until I deactivate the whole Avast suite.

A quick video of what happened :
