Title: Error message after upgrading in Vista
Post by: cmarte on December 14, 2007, 08:23:28 PM
I upgraded to Avast 4.7.1098 which seems to work fine. But I now Vista gives error message every time I boot up that says:"Cannot connect to download 203.avast.com (75.126.120.197:80) Total minutes 1:01.
 How can I eliminate the error message?

What is your firewall ?
It is possible that your firewall blocks outbound connection until it is fully established comodo firewall does this.

You could delay the avast update check, edit the avast4.ini file, [InetWD] section, add the following line if it isn't present, AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds=120 (for broadband connections). See example below, the figure is in seconds and you can set your own duration to wait before checking for updates. This allows time for a connection to be fully established.

Quote
[InetWD]
AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds=60

The firewall is Zone Alarm.

1) If your subscription allows the update right now (i.e., if it is not expired). Home (free) version need registering each 14 months.

2) If your firewall settings and allow avast.setup to connect.
    If you're not sure, just turn off your firewall (to be sure the update failure is not due to it).
    Maybe you should 'remove' avast.setup entry, try to update, receiving a new alert from the firewall, allowing it and checking it to remember.

3)  Check your proxy settings into avast!:
     Left click the avast icon > Settings
     Update (Basic) > Details > Proxy
     Make sure your browser is not set to "Work Offline" (this option is generally in the File menu).
     If it doesn't help, try switching from "Auto-detect" to "No proxy" (I'm assuming you're not connecting to the Internet via proxy).

4) Please, post the last 100-150 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log

The update seems to be working properly. The problem is the error message appears after every boot.

Did you follow David's advices on reply #1?

I don't know how to edit the avast4.ini file.

With notepad it is just a text file as I said.

1. Edit the "C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\avast4.ini"file.
2. Find the [InetWD] section.
3. add the following line if it isn't present, AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds=120 (for broadband connections).

See example below, the figure is in seconds and you can set your own duration to wait before checking for updates. This allows time for a connection to be fully established.

Quote
[InetWD]
AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds=120

4. once you have added the new line, Save and exit the file.
5. reboot and see if that resolves the problem.

I don't know how to edit the avast4.ini file.
Click 'Settings' in my signature and go to the first post at that thread.
You can use Notepad to edit the avast4.ini file.

Hi David,

Have edited the avast4.ini file from 120 up to 1080 seconds to no avail. The error message still reads:

Information about current update:
Last encountered error: Cannot connect to download11.avast.com (67.15.38.62:80).

Total time: 1:04

I would leave it at 120 that should be more than enough, especially if you are getting this very soon after boot.

Rather than tell us that you have edited 120 to 1080, I would rather see what you have done in the avast4.ini file as I feel it can't be right. Please copy and paste the complete [InetWD] section here (everything including the section headings between the [InetWD] and the [Quick] heading) ?

One you say you edited 120, well that line wouldn't have been in the original avast4.ini and if it were 1080 (18 minutes) if it was correct the error wouldn't appear until a little after 18 minutes after boot.

So is the error now delayed by some 18+ minutes after boot or is it still the same as before you made the modification to the avast4.ini.

There is also the slight possibility because we are in the close proximity of the windows patch Tuesday it too might be hogging the connection.

The error always appears soon after the boot.
I changed the time back to 120 seconds and here is the copy of my notepad readout:

[InetWD]
UseRAS=0
AssumeAlwaysConnected=0
AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds=120
[Quick]
EnableSkins=0
InfectionExitApp=0
ShowResults=0

First can you confirm you have a broadband (always on) connection ?

If so I don't know if having the UseRAS and AssumeAlwaysConnected both at zero (which is I believe the default) might somehow invalidate the connection delay, try changing the AssumeAlwaysConnected=0 to AssumeAlwaysConnected=1, reboot and see if that has any effect.

You didn't directly answer Tech's question about do you use an internet proxy to connect to the internet, you just said the connections are correct. Can you answer that question ?

I would be really helpful if we ask a detailed question you give a detailed answer as we are chasing a problem that shouldn't be that much of problem to resolve so we need to know as much detail as possible.

Tech also asked:

4) Please, post the last 100-150 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log

After making the change to avast4.ini I suggested, reboot and if the error reoccurs check the log and post the last (chronological order) 100-150 lines (bottom of the file).

Life is worth living again.

Changed the 0 to a 1 for AssumeAlwaysConnected as you told me and the error message no longer appears.

Should I take out the line you asked me to insert: "AlwaysConnectedWaitseconds=120"?

Yes, I always use an internet proxy to connect to the internet and the broadband connection is always on.

No, if you removed that I believe you would see the error again. It seems as I thought not having the AssumeAlwaysConnected=1 somehow invalidated or ignored the AlwaysConnectedWaitseconds=120 setting.

Either the proxy needs authentication and the username and password aren't set or the proxy isn't completely established when avast is checking for updates (the delay should allow that to happen) or the AssumeAlwaysConnected= being 0 invalidated/ignored delay setting.

No, let it there. Two minutes for the antivirus update will reduce stressing while login.

Yes, I always use an internet proxy to connect to the internet and the broadband connection is always on.
Did you configure it into avast proxy settings or you've let them automatic?
Which are the address and port number used? Which is the application proxy (if it is a local one)?

The error message has not returned. I greatly appreciate your help in correcting my system. You quickly recognized what the problem was and told me how to fix it despite my meager knowledge. Thanks.

You have the great knowledge of asking... you've asked in the right place... I won't call it meager...
