Title: Avast program update not done automatically.
Post by: pdkent2002 on December 02, 2022, 09:52:31 PM
My platform:  Win 10 Home 64bit, ver. 22H2, build: 19045.2251

For past several times that Avast has issued a program update for Free Antivirus, the program has not updated automatically.  Not sure how long this has been the case.  I find out by periodically manually going to the program update portion of the menu.  Sometimes, although the text on that page says "Avast free antivirus is up to date", when I press the "Check for Updates" button sometimes the program downloads and installs an update then instructs me to restart my computer to complete the installation.  Why didn't it automatically install the update?  I also have the antivirus definitions set for automatic update and that works properly, keeping my definitions updated.

Using Avast version: 22.11.6041 (build 22.11.7716.762), UI 1.0.741
Avast program update options setting: Radio button for "Automatically update my application" is selected. [proxy box not checked]
Avast notification options settings:  All boxes checked except for "silent mode".
What am I missing?

Thanks Bob3160.  However, my preference is to minimize maintenance activities on my PC.  As I noted, I want Avast program updates to be installed automatically.  That's why I selected "Automatically update my application".  I find Avast does a better job of debugging updates prior to release than does Microsoft with their updates.  I do routinely delay MS updates so I can do a little research to make sure that I'm unlikely to create a problem by installing their updates.  I've never been sorry that I installed an Avast update.  I noted my update settings in my OP.  If you see that I've selected the wrong option for what I want the program to do, or are aware of another setting that might be interfering with automated program updates (even though Avast reliably automatically updates my antivirus definitions), please let me know.

Please not, you didn't share your setting as to the updates of the virus definitions and program itsdelf.
Your screenshot was of a different setting.

Bob3160,

Please note the 2nd line of the final paragraph of my original post.  As far as the attachment, it was the first time I had ever tried to attach an image to a posting and when I thought I had attached all 3 I wanted to include, none of them show on my preview.  I hope this time, only attaching the image file of my update settings, you will see what I said in text in my original post even though this time, I still don't see the image of my current attachment on the preview.

You currently have the correct settings for auto program updates.
Realize that updates are staggered. Not everyone gets the update at the same time.
Sometimes if you force checking an update you may get it earlier than when it
would have happened if you waited for the auto update. (Just as in windows when auto updates are pushed.)

Thanks for the comeback.  In the future,  I'll go to this forum and look for the date of the latest corporate program update announcement for a version newer than the one I have installed.  I assume that I should receive the update within a few weeks of availability.  I get the antivirus signature updates automatically on the same day they're released, but I realize that the signature files are small compared with the program update files and the capacity of the servers won't enable the same speed of push-out.

By the way, please note the attachment I hope is attached to this message.  Apparently the software used by this forum thinks that you're a bot!  Don't know if you were aware of that.  Or, maybe you are?

It doesn't think that it is a somewhat humorous forum category, in the same way as Newbie, Jr. Member,it is based on posts made, to accrue this many posts you must be a bot :)
