Title: Avast One dumped on me!!!
Post by: loungehake on December 06, 2022, 05:05:55 PM
I have just received an unrequested update to Avast One.  It has left my Avast Free installation in some disarray.

I was not asked for permission.  The update went ahead without my having the option of stopping it.

I was forced to accept firewall and VPN options.  It was incredibly fortunate that I had just done a system backup which was immediately restored.

I hate to think what inconvenience would have been caused to the non-tech users whom I support.

It really takes the biscuit!  >:(

Strange, I use the free version and have never seen a forced update to a different version.

Hi Bob.  My wife has helped me get down from the top of the wardrobe onto which I fell from the ceiling.  I was somewhat shocked but things are now clearer.  I am worried that my non-tech friends might have the same experience and find that their Windows system is not as tidy as it should be.  If that happens, I could be for a 120 mile round trip to sort out problems gifted to one of my non-tech friends.  I am electing to uninstall Avast One and reinstall Avast Free.  It has left a bit of a mess and I am busily checking settings.  The Firewall in Avast One changed the network from my preferred Public to Private.  It also knocked out a WiFi adapter and I had to uninstall/reinstall the driver.

It is not the first time that this has happened.  Such updates must be allowed to be done in a planned fashion.  How does Avast know if a user is ready for such an upheaval?  Is the receiving system in a good state?  Is the user able to handle problems arising from this discomforting surprise?

As it happens, the affected system is a very old one and Avast One slows it too much so that is why am reinstalling Avast Free.

Anyway, worse things happen at sea so I musn't grumble too much.  I just hope that it doesn't happen again.  I always set version updates to Manual so that I have control over this kind of situation.

I wonder if this has happened because I was using an older Avast Free version 22.4 on the affected Windows 10 device.

A very Happy Christmas to you and Mrs Bob (and many more of them).   :)
