Title: Avast sure seems to be working really fast

When I attempt to run Avast free anti-virus, it 'performs' it's anti-virus scan in under 1 second and gives me an immediate pop-up message telling me my computer is all secure and does not have any issues.  Now, I am no expert in how these things work, but I suspect an anti-virus software has to take the time to scan the files for irregularities and corruptions.  How long should this take? 

Does any one have any idea why my software is giving me this message?  I can't realistically believe that it is actually doing the virus check that it says it has performed.
